    I. Introduction

Students come to class late. When students come to class late, it can disrupt the flow of a lectureor discussion, distract other students, impede learning, and generallyerode class morale. Moreover, if left unchecked, lateness canbecome chronic and spread throughout the class. Because there area number of possible reasons students arrive to class late, considering which causes are at the root of the problem can helpguide instructors to appropriate responses and strategies.Understanding the reasons, however, does not require tolerating thebehavior.

The consequences associated with a behavior help determinewhether or not that behavior will be repeated. If the consequencesare negative, the behavior is less likely to reoccur. This applies tocoming late to class. If instructors fail to respond to or penalizelateness, or do so inconsistently, the behavior is likely to continue.

    VI. Recommendation

    1. Have clear rules on punctuality.

Students need to know that there is a clear rule in place with regardto punctuality. They need to know what the consequence is for beinglate and they need to know that this will be consistently applied bystaff.

    2. Don't let a late arrival disrupt the flow of the lesson.

When a student arrives late, direct them to their seat but don'taddress the fact they were late until after the lesson. A brief"Everything OK? Sit their please, you can explain after the lesson

why you were late." is better than getting drawn into an argumentwhich other students may enjoy.

    3. Always follow up lateness and ensure pupil makes up missedwork.

Students need to know that the consequence for being late willalways be applied no matter what their excuse may be. Make sureyou always spend a minute or two after the lesson finding out what

the problem was and giving them the work they must catch up either at home or in break.

    4. Have a reward system which acknowledges those who comeon time.

Students like to do well. Good attendance is something thatall students can achieve, regardless of ability and it should beacknowledged like any other social skill. Competition between groupsis a good motivator.

    5. Keep records.

Get pupils to fill in a form giving reason for late arrival and the timethey arrived? Send copies home with notification of consequences ifit continues.

    Thank You!
