George Beyrouthi’s editorial/education/advertising: 2/12/2014 Parabolic Stop and Reverse (PSAR): Yesterday I wrote: One of the indicators that we use in our FS Securities model (technical analysis) is an indicator that we believe is more of a leading indicator than lagging. ………… We try to rank our indicators based on their previous performance. The PSAR, in addition to the Stochastic and Volume have early signals. Interpretation of the Parabolic SAR: Wilders incorporated an acceleration factor into the parabolic system, the SAR moves in the direction of new trends (Davidson, 2008). At first the SAR moves relatively slow, as the acceleration factor increases based on the formula above the SAR begins to move faster, until it catches up to the price action. As soon as the trend reverses the SAR stops and generates a reverse signal for example in an bullish trend the SAR will appear below the prices which is a buy signal (Edwards & Magee, 1997: Murphy, 1999), as it gains momentum it will move closer to the price action and eventually it will catch up and if the trend reverses the SAR will stop and if a new bearish trend begins the new SAR will appear above the price action which is a sell signal. The SAR works well in trending markets; however the system can produce whipsaws during neutral periods. Strengths and Weaknesses: The Parabolic SAR is an excellent indicator for identifying trends and reversals in trends, an advantage that the SAR system gives is that it can be calculated in advance of trades and market opening, key strength of the indicator is that it reduces lag. In the case of the SAR, the shorter the time frame of the candles the more accurate the signals are, for example: if the SAR is plotted over a weekly chart, the trader will have to wait a week before the next SAR appears, thus, the longer the timeframe then larger the lag in the indicator vice versa. Whilst the Parabolic SAR is a solid indicator during trending periods it has a tendency to create whipsaws during neutral periods. More tomorrow.

Indices and Commodities

GOLD: Gold and silver futures climbed the most since

September 2013 as a rally for oil prices revived demand for the metals as stores of value.

Crude futures in New York rose as much as 4.8 percent, rebounding from a five-year low. Gold earlier fell to a three-week low after Swiss voters rejected a measure that would’ve required their central bank to hold a portion of its assets in bullion. Prices erased this year’s losses as Moody’s Investors Service cut Japan’s credit rating and U.S. holiday spending slowed, fueling concern that global growth will falter.

SILVER: Silver futures for March delivery jumped 7.3 percent

to $16.692 an ounce on the Comex, the largest advance since September 2013. Prices rose as much as 8.1 percent. (Source: Bloomberg.com)

CRUDE OIL: West Texas Intermediate rebounded from the lowest level in more than five years as the market selloff prompted by OPEC’s failure last week to curb production took a pause.

Futures in New York rose the most in more than two years and Brent jumped 3.4 percent in London. Both grades had their biggest monthly loss in November in almost six years after the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries signaled it will leave it to the market to curb a glut. Current prices are no guarantee of a significant drop in U.S. shale output, Iran’s Oil Minister Bijan Namdar Zanganeh said in a Nov. 28 interview.

Dividends are payments made by a corporation to its shareholder members. It is the portion of corporate profits paid out to stockholders.[1]

When a corporation earns a profit or surplus, that money can be put to two uses: it can either be re-invested in the business (called retained earnings), or it can be distributed to shareholders. There are two ways to distribute cash to shareholders: share repurchases or dividends.

[2][3] Many corporations retain a portion of their earnings and pay the remainder as a dividend.

Dividends are payments made by a corporation to its shareholder members. It is the portion of corporate profits paid out to stockholders.[1] When a corporation earns a profit or surplus, that money can be put to two uses: it can either be re-invested in the business (called retained earnings), or it can be distributed to shareholders. There are two ways to distribute cash to shareholders: share repurchases or dividends.[2][3] Many corporations retain a portion of their earnings and pay the remainder as a dividend. A dividend is allocated as a fixed amount per share. Therefore, a shareholder receives a dividend in proportion to their shareholding. For the joint stock company, paying dividends is not an expense; rather, it is the division of after tax profits among shareholders. Retained earnings (profits that have not been distributed as dividends) are shown in the shareholder equity section in the company's balance sheet - the same as its issued share capital. Public companies usually pay dividends on a fixed schedule, but may declare a dividend at any time, sometimes called a special dividend to distinguish it from the fixed schedule dividends. Dividends are usually paid in the form of cash and shares in the company (either newly created shares or existing shares bought in the market.) Further, many public companies offer dividend reinvestment plans, which automatically use the cash dividend to purchase additional shares for the shareholder.
