he German Colony

S I T E S & AT T R6

THE GERMAN COLONY

Haifa’s German Colony was establishedin 1869 by the Templar Society (notto be confused with the KnightsTemplars), whose members arrivedfrom Germany with the goal of settinga personal example in settling theHoly Land and preparing residentsfor the arrival of the Messiah, accordingto Christian belief. The Templarsfounded seven colonies around thecountry and were influential in theprocess of modernizing Eretz Israel, and Haifa in particular. Their impactwas visible in many beautiful buildings, agriculture, transport, the hotel industry, trade and industry. During World WarII the Templars were considered enemysubjects because of their Germanorigin, and were eventually expelledfrom Eretz Israel by the British Mandate. In recent years the German Colonyhas been renovated and restored, turningit into one of Haifa’s liveliest and mostattractive centers of enter tainment.Interspersed among the refurbishedold stone buildings is a large selectionof restaurants to suit all palates, as wellas many coffee houses and pubs full ofatmosphere, shopping centers and theHaifa Tourist Board Visitors Center.

In the evening, when the beautiful BahaiGardens are illuminated, visitors canenjoy the stunning visual display, uniquethroughout the world, of lights andcolors streaming down from the peakof Mount Carmel, through the GermanColony and right down to the por t.Both daytime and evening tours arerecommended, each offering its ownspecial experience of sights and senses.
