On the one hand, translation and interpreting are fields that require generalist knowledge and skills that are applicable to many different types of settings (translation research; writing; translation strategies; public speaking skills, memory development skills, language transfer skills, note-taking skills for consecutive interpretation etc.). On the other, professionals may want

to specialize in specific areas either to meet their individual interests or those being determined by the industry and their specific language combinations.

Professional associations, different industries, and certification bodies are recommending that translators and interpreters specialize in order to meet the specific terminological and systemic demands of different settings (technical translator, scientific translator, marketing translator, medical interpreter, school interpreter, etc.).

Change has been discussed with LLC chair Robert Sullivan, HFA Associate Dean Joseph Bartolomeo, Faculty Senate Secretary MJ Peterson, and faculty teaching in the certificate program.
