Student Leaders
Last Friday, we announced our Student Leaders for 2021 at a special on-site assembly. It was a wonderful opportunity to formally recognise our new Student Leaders and wish them the best of luck as they start their school leadership journey at KPS. I was incredibly impressed with how our students performed during all aspects of the selection process, delivering high quality speeches to their peers and participating in interviews as part of the School Captain selection process. I know that our new Student Leaders will do an outstanding job in providing voice and direction for our students in 2021.
Our Student Leaders are listed below:
School Captains: Georgia Gidman and Millie Harper
School Vice Captains: Isabella Wong and Tiama Kondratowicz
Student Voice Leaders: Roman Moser and Ryan Jenkins
Hume House Captains: Lachlan Peggie and Sienna Clark

Transition Day and 2021 Grades
Transition Day is always one of the most exciting days of the school year and yesterday was no exception. All of our students had the opportunity to work at next year’s level for most of the day and we also welcomed our new Foundation students to school for their most extensive session to date. Across the school, we had a highly successful day and there was a fabulous buzz throughout the day. The final step in the creation of our 2021 grades is to use feedback from Transition Day to make final adjustments to our 2021 grades. Parents will be informed of their children’s grades on Tuesday, December 15th – students will bring home a letter identifying their 2021 teachers and a school map for 2021.
Reporting
Student Semester 2 reports will be available on the Compass Portal from 4.00pm on Tuesday afternoon. As mentioned previously, the Semester 2 format will be a little different in recognition of the impact of remote learning. Students will received A to E grades for English and Mathematics and all other curriculum areas will have a teacher comment rather than a grade. This change to the format is consistent across government schools in Victoria.
Staffing Teams
In 2021, we have a fabulous collection of teaching teams across our school. Blending youth and experience, we are looking forward to the impact that our 2021 teams will have upon student learning, wellbeing and engagement.

On Friday, our Year 2 students held a Writing Showcase! They students had innovated on known texts (The ‘Pig the Pug’ series), and created their own stories.
Miss George and I were very lucky and attended the celebration. The students visited all the Year 2 classrooms and read each other’s narratives. They provided feedback too. Students were very excited to receive their feedback.
Here are some of their narratives:
Lilliana was very excited to receive feedback about her story! She was jumping around with joy when she saw all the post it notes on her book! J
I love how the students view themselves as authors. They included ‘About the Author’ pages in their books.
After students had visited all the classrooms, 2J did a reflection about the writing celebration. The students showed great insight into, and understanding of, the qualities of high quality narratives. The 2J students identified some of the elements that were being celebrated. The commented:
“They were very readable.” Catherine
“They used interesting words.” Mia
“There was positivity in it.” Markus
“I liked how they made the characters have emotions.” Grace
“They used talking marks, exclamation marks and question marks.” Riley
“They were really awesome. There were great pictures on everyone’s work.”
“I liked that everyone looked at everyone’s work. Everyone read them carefully and read them out loud to other people.”
“Someone drew lots of colours in a pattern and I want to do that.” Grace
“I noticed really neat handwriting.” Jaric
“Everyone worked hard.” Jackson
“I really liked the front covers. They had titles, names and pictures, and a hint of what would be in their stories.”
“The writing was awesome. There were lots of details in the writing.” Phoenix
“They’re all just too good!”
It was a great celebration of writing! Thank you to the Year 2 students and teachers for letting us be a part of it! It was fantastic to see students so excited about their writing!
This week students across the school from Foundation to Year 6 have begun their ‘Writer’s Festival’!
Through choice, you can help students self-differentiate their learning so work is more appropriately challenging. You can also combat student apathy, helping students connect with their strengths and interests and giving them more autonomy, power, and control over their work, which boosts their intrinsic motivation. (The Key Benefits of Choice – ASCD)
Opening choice over both topic, genre and strategies used for writing provide opportunities for engagement and investment in skill development. (https://www.education.vic.gov.au/school/teachers/teachingresources/discipline/english/literacy/Pages/default.aspx)
The Writer’s Festival is a chance for students to write whatever text type they want to, and about any topic they want. It is another opportunity for students to be creative and have fun with their writing.
Students have chosen their text type and have begun to develop their ideas. In some year levels teachers are running workshops based on what the students want. For example in Foundation, Mrs Jacobs will be running writing workshops in Narrative writing and Miss MacCaskell will be running workshops for information texts. Students will be able to choose which one they want to go to.
I can’t wait to see what students write!
In Year 2, students recorded which text type they wanted to write. The teachers have listened to student voice and planned based on what the students want.
I can’t wait to see what students write!
This week our teachers have continued Literacy planning for 2021! We have been planning Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening, Spelling, Handwriting and Grammar.
Have a great week,
Emma White
Literacy Coordinator
