Warden's MessageThe County of Simcoe has a long history of providing sustainable Solid Waste Management services and programs to residents within our 16 member municipalities. Following the service impacts that occurred in 2019, the County worked with contractors to bring consistency and predictability back to your weekly curbside waste collections and to support the growth of our green bin program. We also adapted quickly to address impacts as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and worked to ensure this vital service was continued in a safe manner. Since the implementation of our bi-weekly schedule in February 2020, the County has seen a dramatic reduction in the number of service impacts in spite of increased health protocols to protect drivers and residents during the pandemic. We have also witnessed a 35 per cent increase in the amount of green bin organic waste collected and a corresponding decrease in our garbage tonnages.
The COVID-19 pandemic has had a substantial impact on solid waste management services in the County of
Simcoe. As a result of the outbreak, the County reacted quickly to growing health concerns and closed our waste facilities until extensive safety measures could be installed to protect staff and residents. Working quickly to re-open four facilities in short order, before re-opening the remaining three sites and moving to a five-day-a-week schedule for five out of our seven facilities. Despite cancelling textiles and electronics collections, due to COVID-19, we were pleased to offer our residents our annual battery collection and leaf and yard waste pick-ups in spite of the extraordinary circumstances and additional workload as a result of the health precautions. The County announced the approval of a new cart-based collection contract with Miller Waste starting in November 2021. There will be many benefits to storage, transfer to and from curbs, predictability to service and continued growth in our diversion rate as we look to reduce garbage and grow our green bin program.
We look forward to establishing our new normal in terms of the health pandemic and our solid waste management services. Our new contractor and cart-based service will revolutionize waste collection in Simcoe County. We continue to engage with our residents on our solid waste management services as part of our Solid Waste Management Strategy. Our staff are here to meet your current needs and plan sustainable and efficient services for our future, this includes ongoing work on our Environmental Resource Recovery Centre (ERRC). Thank you for your patience and for continuing to work with us as we enhance and move our waste services forward. All the best and stay safe,
George CornellCounty of Simcoe WardenBIG CHANGES

Faced with rising costs, new provincial waste regulations and closure of County landfills, the County of Simcoe is working to manage your waste differently. The Environmental Resource Recovery Centre (ERRC) is one Simcoe County solution to limit what we send to landfills and reduce emissions by recovering resources locally. Based on previous curbside waste audit findings it is estimated that 22,500 tonnes of our curbside garbage was organics that should have been diverted through the green bin program in 2019. The value of edible food waste that County residents disposed of in the garbage is worth approximately $46 million per year. By processing organics, the County can reduce
emissions from transporting organic material, which currently travels 3,600 km a week to an external processing facility. Currently under development at 2976 Horseshoe Valley Road West in Springwater, the ERRC will process green bin organics into compost or fertilizer and manage the transfer of garbage and recycling. As part of the development process, the County has recently completed the reforestation/restoration of 11 hectares of land at a 3:1 ratio to mitigate the environmental impacts of the ERRC, planting more than 21,000 trees within our green and growing Simcoe County Forests.
Wish-cycling is the practice of tossing questionable items in the recycling bin.
When recycling boxes contain unacceptable items they may be
rejected and may end up in the landfill.

• Insulation and Styrofoam packaging must be bagged to reduce windblown litter.
• There is a minimum fee of $5 for disposal; avoid coming to the facility with small loads.
• Propane cylinders are accepted free of charge but please do not put them in the garbage or recycling. Notify site staff upon arrival at the facility as they are managed differently for health and safety reasons.
