Notes from Fr. Bob...
SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT
Many examples are used to express the relationship of Christ and his people. One particularly powerful example can be used with younger children. A teacher holds aloft a box containing various articles, and tells the classroom that ‘Inside this box is the best thing God ever made’. This should get the attention of the children. Then the teacher teases the class by emptying the box of its cargo: a chocolate bar, a music CD, the logo from the Chicago Bears, and a cell phone. As these are produced the teacher asks if these are the best things God has made. The class is not sure. A child is then invited forward to look into the now empty box, except for a mirror at the base. The class is reminded that in the box is the most beautiful thing God has made. Of course when the child looks inside all he/she sees is her/his reflection. This then is shown to the class, the message being that we are each special, beloved by the Lord, and the best thing he ever made.
Children are usually able to accept this basic fact more easily than their parents. Hopefully they will be young enough not to have been told otherwise too often. Hopefully they have not found themselves too hurt, and therefore tempted to close in on themselves. It is less likely that they will have failed too badly, or lost a relationship, and found themselves feeling worthless inside. By contrast if you were to ask most of us adults to look into the mirror to see a wonderful creation of the Lord, would we readily believe it?
As Jesus begins his public ministry he is comforted by a voice of assurance, a voice of love that tells him he is beloved by his Father. This is a moment of truth, a moment of transfiguration. This gives him the strength he needs to continue a journey that will lead to the cross. In our own lives too, we need to know the love God has for us. We need to be reminded that we have been created by him and chosen in love.
Today the apostles see the glory of our Lord. They want to remain in this beautiful place. It is Peter who speaks up; “let us stay here, I will set up camp”. The impetuous apostle does not realize the significance of the moment. Just as Abraham imagined that the Lord would take his son, Peter imagines that they had already reached the end of their journey. Jesus has been acknowledged as the chosen one of God, not just in their presence, but also in the presence of history, in the fulfillment of the Law and the Prophets. His next ‘transfiguration’ will wait until Gethsemane, the cross and finally the risen glory of Easter morning.
As we continue our pilgrimage through Lent, we look within ourselves for the strength we need to follow the
way of the cross. We need a reminder of God’s love in our moments of doubt. Sometimes we lose the ones we love, sometimes we find ourselves lost, unsure of our next move in life. If our God loves us, why do these things happen to us? There are no easy answers to such questions. Yet we know that God has given us the ultimate gift, he has given his Son that we might be free. Could it be that in facing dark times with God on our side we become more whole? We have a choice, to be alone and embittered, or to walk with him and hear that voice of encouragement, the voice that transfigures, calls us to be more than we are already; the voice that calls us his beloved.
Each of us has the capability of building others up, of showing them the love of Christ by our actions and our lives. Thank God we do not struggle alone. Like Christ we each have moments of transformation along the way of faith that leads us to Easter. Those defining moments may be fleeting, but they point to the Father’s presence with us. They may be an embrace, a wedding day or the birth of a new baby: high-points in our lives, confirming us just as Christ is confirmed in the presence of Moses and Elijah, the Lawgiver and the Prophet.
Yet transformation is more than a moment. For Christ, it is the start of a long journey of endurance towards another hill and a more painful spectacle that leads to our freedom. Peter hopes the moment will last, but as we know such moments never do. Yet our little moments of transfiguration, instances when we are shown love, acceptance, and encouragement by others, are moments when we are given strength to journey on, like Jesus, to the moment of Redemption. They echo the voice of a God who says to each of us, “you are my chosen ones”. Lenten Prayers,
Fr. Bob Pastor

LENTEN OUTREACH
BETTER MEALS IN MADAGASCAR In Madagascar, half of all children are undernourished. That means 50% of kids won’t grow to reach their full potential. But communities are changing this by focusing on improving health and nutrition. What role has food played in your life? How can you help those who lack access to enough nutritious food. Visit crsricebowl.org to learn more.
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE OUTREACH
February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month - In February 2007, the National Domestic Violence Hotline launched loveisrespect, a National Dating Abuse Helpline to serve as a 24-hour resource for teens experiencing dating violence or relationship abuse. In 2011, The Hotline partnered with Break the Cycle, a national leader in preventing dating violence which enabled loveisrespect to grow into an organization and offer 24-hour text services, chat sessions, and other live help. This February, we celebrate Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month (TDVAM), and loveisrespect has chosen “Know Your Worth” as the 2021 awareness month theme. By helping young adults learn about healthy and unhealthy relationships and how to focus on self-empowerment, we can stop dating abuse before it starts. This theme emphasizes that every young person deserves healthy, positive relationships. ACDVO will participate in TDVAM by dedicating to a 28-day digital campaign sharing facts, tools, resources, and daily inspiration on our social media accounts.

PRESIDENT PROJECT MOBILES
The third graders have been presenting their research and mobiles about a chosen President! As they researched their chosen President, the students learned interesting facts about them and what was going on in the world during the time that they served. It’s always so fun to see the mobiles all the kids put together! Way to go 3rd grade.
ASH WEDNESDAY
On Ash Wednesday our students and teachers took part in a virtual prayer service before they headed over to the parish to receive their ashes. As we still cannot gather all together the way we have become so used to, it was such a treat seeing all the students and faculty come through the church!

A Note from Deacon Stuart and Marlene Heyes
Dear Friends,
Marlene and I write this note with mixed feelings.
We have decided to move to TN and join the IL exodus for several reasons.
Foremost - Marlene’s health is compromised with the severe Winters here and a milder climate is best for us both at our time of life.
Chicago is not the place we loved to visit anymore and likely won’t be in our life-time.
Our daughter, Ruth, and family moved there last year and love it. When we visit-ed recently we experienced why.
We visited last week and found the perfect home in a great Del Webb 55+ com-munity - really great set up and first class amenities.
Nashville area offers so much, it is drawing multitudes from IL NY & CA. Cost, climate, and quality of living!!
So we’ll be leaving IL and all of you in March / April. We’ll really miss you all and the St Cletus community.
Blessings to you all, Stuart & Marlene

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
God’s Love Poured Out
In this month of Love, we had many opportunities to see God’s love in action in Religious Education! Many of our families celebrated the World Day of the Sick by taking the time to pray for someone who is sick or elderly, and many took it as an opportunity to do an act of service for someone who is suffering from cancer, Covid, or another chronic illness.
Many of our families are heeding the call for almsgiving during Lent by doing random acts of kindness and serving others through agencies such as BEDS plus, or our local food pantry.
This weekend, we saw God’s love and spirit abound at our Confirmation celebration, where 102 teens and adults were confirmed by Fr. Bob Clark, our Pastor. In this year of the ongoing pandemic, the local Pastors were delegated to confirm the Confirmandi. It was a Spirit-filled and moving celebration for the Confirmandi, Sponsors, Parents and Catechists. We are very proud of our young adults who celebrated this Sacramental moment, and welcome them to embrace new roles in our Church as they look to join different liturgical ministries.

40 DAYS FOR LIFE: FEBRUARY 17 – MARCH 28
You can protect mothers and children by joining this worldwide mobilization to pray and fast for an end to abortion! Through prayer and fasting, peaceful vigils and community outreach, 40 Days for Life has inspired 1,000,000 volunteers! With God’s help, much good has been accomplished in the effort to protect the lives of the unborn.
The local 40 Days for Life Vigil in our community this Lent will take place at Access Health Center (in the public right-of-way), 1700 75th St, Downers Grove. Vigil hours: 7AM to 7PM daily. To learn more, contact Caron at [email protected]. To sign up for prayer times go to http://www.40daysforlife.com/downersgrove.
COMPASSIONATE CARE MINISTRY
The Compassionate Care Ministry is again badly in need of postage stamps for its notes of sympathy and support during the first year following the loss of a loved one. Each bereaved family receives six cards during that year. This means that if there are ten funerals during a period of one month, 50 stamps are needed in that month alone. Your generous donations have meant so much in the past and we are very grateful. If you are able to contribute to this worthwhile ministry in this way, it will be very much appreciated. Simply place them in an envelope marked CCM and put them through the slot in the rectory door—or drop them in one of the collection baskets located at each exit in the church building.
BULLETIN ARTICLE SUBMISSIONS
Please note that all Canticle articles are to be emailed to [email protected] as text with pictures attached separately. All articles are due 5p.m. Friday a full week (9 days) before Sunday’s publication.

Sunday Notes
HISTORY OF SALVATION
The first reading today continues the “history of salvation” narrative that we hear throughout Lent this year. Today’s story was among the best-loved in the Jewish tradition (surely Joseph told the story to young Jesus as he formed him in the ways of their faith); the early fathers of the Church were very fond of it as a means of explaining the sacrifice of Christ on the cross. The overall tone of the first reading, psalm, and second reading seems a little incongruous with the dazzling Gospel, until we remember that the Transfiguration was placed as the Gospel for this Sunday precisely to remind us of the glory that awaits those who live faithfully and obediently to the will of God. In the life of Jesus, it is a preview of the glory of his resurrection; for us it is a glimpse of the destiny of those who continue, as we heard in last week’s Gospel, to repent and believe in the Good News. TODAY’S READINGS
First Reading — The sacrifice of Abraham, our father in faith (Genesis 22:1-2, 9a, 10-13, 15-18). Psalm — I will walk before the Lord, in the land of the living (Psalm 116). Second Reading — If God is for us, who can be against us? (Romans 8:31b-34). Gospel — Jesus was transfigured before them, and his clothes became dazzling white (Mark 9:2-10). FEAST OF FAITH
The Opening Prayer
At the conclusion of the Introductory Rites of the Mass, the presider says or chants the words “Let us pray,” followed by the Opening Prayer. This prayer is also called a “collect” because it gathers or “collects” the prayers of the entire assembly into one. The Roman collects that we pray in our liturgy—noted for the brevity, clarity, and conciseness of the Latin originals—date from a variety of periods. Some are quite new; others reach back more than a thousand years. They are truly treasures of our tradition.
The Opening Prayer can be divided into four main parts: 1) the invitation, or “Let us pray”; 2) the silence that follows, during which each member of the assembly lifts up before God his or her own prayers; 3) the collect itself, spoken or sung by the priest; 4) and finally the Amen, by which the assembly says, “yes,” “may it be so,” making the prayer their own.
The collect itself almost always follows the same pattern. It begins with an invocation to God. A petition follows, usually very general. We ask for health, strength, wisdom, grace, forgiveness, faith, awareness. Every collect concludes by offering the prayer to God through Jesus Christ. With the Amen of the assembly, the Introductory Rites of the Mass come to an end. —Corinna Laughlin, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

As tax time approaches, we ask everyone who would like a year-end statement of their Year 2020 financial offering to the parish to fill out the form below and drop it in the collection basket after Mass, or simply call the Parish Office at (708) 352-6209 and leave a message. Please include your name, phone and envelope # or address in your message. You may also email [email protected] and submit your request electronically. Rather than mail statements to everyone in the parish, it seems more prudent and conservative to only mail them to those who need them for tax returns.
