Damon, a teacher at District 186, and Aidan, a recent high school graduate, McParland represent the best of our community and highlight the tremendous impact a family can have. At the onset of the pandemic, we received a phone call from Damon asking if he could help United Way raise money for the COVID-19 Response Fund. What was unique however, was how they planned to raise funds.

For a $25 minimum donation, this father and son bagpiping team would travel to the location of your choice and perform a 15-20 minute socially distanced concert.

The success of their efforts was overwhelming. Damon and Aidan had many notable milestones during their 61 performances. They performed at dozens of surprise birthday parties, at six assisted living facilities, at the Springfield Black Lives Matter Candlelight Vigil, and even performed a Facebook live stream with Springfield’s sister city in Japan.

One of our favorite highlights was Damon and Aidan for the “Fans in the Stands” at Super Bowl LV. Their story was featured on the NFL’s social media along with their photos in the virtual seats.

Over the course of 61 performances, they raised over $13,832.

When asked about their experience, Damon said, “It is a wonderful feeling to be able to do that for people, so that even with COVID-19 during a time when have to stay apart, we can still be together, and luckily for us, the bagpipes are the perfect social distance instrument.”

Damon and Aidan not only astounded our staff and volunteers with how much they raised, they brought our community a lot of joy during a challenging time.

Damon and Aidan show us that every person has the ability to do extraordinary things. We are proud to partner with local everyday heroes like Damon and Aiden. Because when we Live United, we create a stronger tomorrow for everyone.

ADDITIONAL VOLUNTEER AND DONATION NEEDSThroughout the year we reached out to local organizations to see what their extra needs were and if there were any changes to their services due to COVID-19. We kept the 211 Call Center updated with these changes so that callers had the correct information when it mattered most.

Our volunteer site connected community members to relevant volunteer needs including virtual and socially distant ways to support such as collection drives and other opportunities to support our local agencies. Learn more and view the list of recipients and donors at springfieldunitedway.org/COVID19.

Alexander loved his book that came in!! He has really been liking trains lately and this has been such a fun book to read with him. Thanks so much! -Katie G.

Thank you does not begin to describe how much of an impact your donation has brought children across central Illinois and specifically, my daughter Alivia and our family. I am looking forward to how much quality time and learning comes from these books we receive. They will bring a smile to Alivia’s face for years to come and you will have a special place in our hearts. -Lacey P.

We’ve been so blessed by the books we’ve received and it is so much fun for my kids to receive a surprise book in the mail each time! As a stay-at-home mom of 3 we do a lot of reading and are so thankful for our growing collection! -Karen O.

My oldest daughter Emma got them also and loved it. Now she loves reading the books her sister receives to her. Molly is always excited to get mail and a new book each month. Both of my girls are ahead and advanced in vocabulary and language. We love this program and always tell our friends about it. -Valerie C.
