January 23, 2020 1 1 The Spirit The Spirit On Sunday the sermon’s theme was primarily on God’s choosing of servants; in this case we are God’s choice. You and I are called by God to do the work of God in this world. The Great Commission of Christ, found at the end of Matthew’s gospel, is that we go into the world and make disciples of all nations, teaching them to obey everything that Christ commanded. It is this commission that has inspired missionaries for thousands of years to go into places and talk of Christ, and do his work. This work has been done well, and has been done poorly. This work has inspired souls, and defeated souls. Some think that this work is done by the church through programs that inspire people to come and learn about scripture, and Christ, and whatever else. Some think that making disciples necessitates dogmatic training, but Jesus knew that a disciple was one who obeyed what he commanded. What did he command? What does it mean when Christ calls a person? What does Christ command you? Quite possibly the easiest answer is love; what does that mean, and how are we living that out? In the early church people of wildly different backgrounds sat together, not always in harmony of course, but certainly with the intention to live in harmony. In Luke’s gospel Jesus was tested by a lawyer once, of course it was a lawyer, lawyers like to test people, make sure they are who they say they are. The lawyer asked, “What must I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus responded with a question, because that is what Jesus does, “What is written in the law? What did you read there?” The lawyer, knowing the law, said, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and you shall love your neighbor as yourself.” It is interesting to me that in Luke’s gospel it is a lawyer that says this, a person who studies and knows the spirit of the law. He didn’t quote the whole Torah, he went right to the heart of the matter. Jesus said, “That’s right, you do that and you will live.” The lawyer, being a lawyer, wanted some clarification. “But who is my neighbor?” In reply Jesus told the parable of the “Good Samaritan.” You know it. A man is robbed and beaten and left for dead on the side of a road. A priest walks by the man and goes to the other side of the road. Priests were the people ordained to bring people to God and that priest couldn’t do it. A Levite walks by the man, doesn’t even try to help. They were like the elders and deacons of the Jewish world then. People used to tell jokes about how a priest, a Levite, and an Israelite walked into a bar. As Jesus told that story people would have expected an Israelite to come next. Instead he says a Samaritan came by next. People hated Samaritans. They hated them all the way. They were good for nothing, ignorant, certainly of questionable character, and then Jesus says a Samaritan stopped and helped the man. This guy spent his own money to make him well. Jesus finished by asking the lawyer who was the neighbor to the robbed fellow. “The one who showed him mercy,” the lawyer said. “Be like that,” Jesus said. We are called by God to make disciples to teach them to obey what Jesus commanded. He commanded mercy, love, forgiveness, generosity, and goodness. I only know one way of teaching people how to live that way. Living that way. God calls all of us to live a different way, in this world, but not of the ways of this world. Are you ready to follow? Am I? We have to. Riding the wave of the Holy Spirit, Garrett

SUNDAY SERVICE TECHNOLOGY SERVICES – TOGETHER WE CAN DO IT

We have just completed a successful Capital Campaign designed to give staff and volunteers the capacity to enhance and improve worship services at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church. In addition to improving parking lots to make access to our church easier, a major portion of the campaign focused on audio-visual improvements to the Sanctuary and adjoining rooms.

We also plan to broadcast Sunday services to the community, members not able to attend a service and others seeking God’s word. It is within our grasp to grow our church with God’s help and your commitment to sharing the work. We are all asked to be disciples of Christ, and we can do so by joining together to share our knowledge and time.

We are inviting interested members of our church to join together and form a Sunday Service Technology Committee to plan, train, coordinate weekly volunteers, and otherwise assist in improving and enhancing the operation of our new technology acquisitions. Running the equipment on a weekly basis and moving forward to broadcasting Sunday services are challenges that are more than one or two people can do alone.

If you are interested in helping with technology as it applies to audio, visual, broadcast, or a combination of these, please contact Susie Cauchi, Church Administrator, 530.673.7353, or [email protected] . Your contributions as a member of this new committee could be an investment in the health of our church as we impact the lives of church members and the surrounding community. We thank you for your continued support in making our upgraded audio-visual dream a reality as well as your patience while we strive to provide optimal audio-visual services for St. Andrew.

What is Scrip?

Scrip are gift cards sold through the church office Mon. - Thurs. 9am-12 & 1- 4pm and on Sundays before and after Sunday service.

Scrip is our gift card system. As you plan your weekly shopping think how you could use scrip to buy your groceries and gasoline, go out to dinner, or shop for that new Spring wardrobe.

How will this benefit you? It is easier than carrying cash, no chance for crafty thieves getting your credit card number.  Scrip is easy to use, and easy to purchase.  How does this benefit the church?  A percentage of your Scrip (gift card) is given to the church by the retailer.  That’s right - it doesn’t cost you any extra money and the church is making a percentage of every card we sell.  Where does this money go?  The money made on scrip goes to the general fund of the church. Scrip helps pay for the electric and gas, the office supplies and many other needed items. When you buy SCRIP it is a Win Win situation.  You benefit and so does the church.

Please stop by the scrip table this Sunday and ask any questions you might have.
