Celebrating God’s Presence

CALL TO WORSHIP (“The Lord of Creation,” 9th c., Old Irish) Beth Hirst One: Let us adore the Lord, All: Maker of marvelous works, Bright heaven with its angels, And

on earth the white-waved sea.

*OPENING HYMN #469 Morning Has Broken Tune: BUNESSAN (Gaelic Melody)(Hymn text & music at the end of worship bulletin.) Text: Eleanor Farjeon

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION (“Thou Dost Not Fall;” Traditional Gaelic) As the rain hides the stars, as the autumn mist hides the hills, as the clouds veil the blue of the sky, so the dark happenings of my lot hide the shining of thy face from me. Yet, if I may hold thy hand in the darkness, it is enough. Since I know that, though I may stumble in my going, thou dost not fall. Amen.

*DECLARATION OF PARDON (Journey Prayer) One: May all that is unforgiven in you All: Be released. One: May your fears yield All: Their deepest tranquilities. One: May all that is unlived in you All: Blossom into a future Graced with love.

*SUNG RESPONSE #316 Breathe On Me, Breath of God (vs. 1,2) Tune: TRENTHAM(Hymn text & music at the end of worship bulletin.) Text: Edwin Hatch

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE & THE LORD’S PRAYER When the pastor says, “God of Mercy,” please respond with, “Hear our prayer.”

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

*PRAYER OF DEDICATION (A selection from “From Thee It Came”)Each thing I have received, from Thee it came, Each thing for which I hope, from Thy love it will come, Each thing I enjoy, it is of Thy bounty, Each thing I ask, comes of Thy disposing. Holy God, loving Father, of the word everlasting, Grant me to have of Thee this living prayer: Lighten my understanding, kindle my will, begin my doing, Incite my love, strengthen my weakness, enfold my desire. Cleanse my heart, make holy my soul, confi rm my faith, Keep safe my mind and compass my body about; As I utter my prayer from my mouth, In mine own heart may I feel Thy presence. Amen.

Proclaiming God’s Word

FIRST SCRIPTURE LESSON: Acts 2:1-7 (p. 885 pew Bible) NRSV Beth HirstWhen the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it fi lled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fi re, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were fi lled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.

Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans?

MUSICAL REFLECTION Come Thou Fount Arr. Mark Geslison Anna Steenson - Guitar; Elaina Steenson - Penny Whistle/Viola

SECOND SCRIPTURE LESSON: Acts 2:8-21 (p. 885 pew Bible) NRSV Scott Paczkowski

And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs—in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.” All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” But others sneered and said, “They are fi lled with new wine.”

But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, “Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o’clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel:

‘In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all fl esh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams.Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fi re, and smoky mist. The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord’s great and glorious day. Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.’”

SERMON “Experiencing the Holy Spirit the Celtic Way” Scott Paczkowski

*BENEDICTION (“The Carmina Gadelica” III, 203) Scott Paczkowski One: May God make safe to you each steep, May God make open to you each pass, May God make clear to you each road, And may He take you in the clasp Of His own two hands. May God shield you on every steep, May Christ keep you in every path, May Spirit bathe you in every pass. All: Amen.
