New to Retirement? 7 Ways to Spend Your Time(Cont’d from pg 1) So what do successful retirees do now that they are away from a career that often defined them? Successful retirees tend to spend their free time in these seven ways:

1. Exercise. Physical exercise is important for both physical and mental health. Taking time at a fitness center, volleyball court, water aerobics class or other activity available at Green Valley Recreation can get your blood pumping, get your endorphins flowing, and revitalize your spirit. You will build muscle, burn calories, and oxygenate your brain--giving you a release from every day stress. Exercising regularly helps you maintain discipline; and you’ll look and feel better than sitting on the couch.

2. Read. Reading is a lifelong skill, and successful people never stop reading books, newspapers, and articles on the internet. Whether it’s fiction or non- fiction, books help give you a greater understanding of the world around you. They introduce you to new characters, environments, cultures, philosophies, ideas, and might even help you build new skills. GVR offers free “lending libraries” and internet access via computers at Member Concierge Kiosks at all of the major centers.

3. Take classes and attend lectures/seminars. Education should not stop when your working days are over. The most successful people in the world are the ones who make a commitment to never stop learning. GVR offers over 1,000 classes year round on everything from cooking and dancing, to learning a foreign language, for a nominal fee. It also offers a free lecture series and monthly Safety Orientation Seminars, which are accessible via the GVR website for viewing whenever and wherever you choose!

4. Volunteer. Volunteering, no matter where or how you do it, it’s beneficial for you and your community. Whether you’re helping out at GVR concerts, pools, fitness centers, movies, special events or clubs, there something for everyone! Volunteering is good for you physically, mentally and socially, and has been proven to contribute to happier and longer lives! 5. Network. GVR offers a wide variety of social op-portunities and gatherings. Step outside your comfort

zones in an effort to meet new people - Participate in Southern Arizona Senior Games. Attend your HOA’s potlucks and social events. Join a GVR Club... or even a few! It’s not only fun – it’s good for you!

6. Hobbies. Finding and pur-suing a hobby helps you relieve stress and build skills that keep you physically and emotionally

alert. GVR offers a number of hobby shops including art, camera, ceramics, computer, lapidary and sil-versmithing, metal working, woodworking and many more. It’s a breath of fresh air that keeps you grounded, and socially connected.

7. Spend time with friends and family. If you want to be successful in retirement, you have to prioritize your time with friends and family. They will be there for you in good times and bad! There’s nearly endless ways to make friends at GVR! Improve your abilities, your mindset, and expand your network in retirement by incorporating a few of these things into your routines. To learn more about what opportunities are available through GVR, go to any GVR major center; visit www.gvrec.org; or flip through the pages of our monthly GVRNOW! News- letter - the opportunities abound!

The Friends of Madera CanyonBy Jim Woodward, President, Friends of Madera Canyon

(Cont’d from page 1) Visitor Information Station was built by the Forest Service and operated by the Friends. It is still in operation on the weekends to as-sist visitors with information and liter-ature about the outdoor opportunities available in the Canyon. Our cooper-ative efforts with the Forest Service have resulted in thousands of volun-teer hours and improvement projects including trail development, signage, ramadas and preservation work at the Kent Springs cabin and the establish-ment of Bud Gode Nature Trail.

On an ongoing basis the Friends provide Monday morning cleanup of the Canyon picnic areas, and printing and distribution of hiking maps and other

literature. Larry Pratt, Developed Recreation Project Manager for the Coronado National Forest, said: “With-out the enthusiastic partnership of the Friends, the

high quality of recreation and educa-tional opportunities offered at Madera Canyon would not be possible”. The hiking is amazing and the bird watch-ing is some of the best in the country.

Additionally, we provide nature expe-riences for local 4th grade students through our Docent program and sup-port an annual Scholarship award to a local and worthy high school student.

Please consider becoming a Friend of Madera Canyon. Go to www.FriendsofMaderaCanyon.org or contact us via email at: [email protected].

Understanding Changes in Insurance

By Robert Squire, Pharm.D.

With the new year rapidly approaching, changes come along with it. For most people, major changes come in the form of new or updated insurance plans. Everyone has experienced it; you receive a large packet in the mail outlining everything different about your insur-ance plan. The real question is, “Where do I start in digesting all of this information?” Here are a couple of changes to pay attention to when it comes to your medication.

Changes in prescription coverage:

Preferred PharmacyWithin your packet of information, you may notice the pharmacy you used all year is no longer listed as preferred for your insurance plan. This change means you may end up paying a higher copay if you continue to use your current pharmacy. It’s important to confirm your preferred pharmacy with your insurance plan at the beginning of the year. Confirming your preferred pharmacy can help you to avoid unexpected copay increases.

Out-of-Pocket MedicationSometimes coverage on medications may change, even if your preferred pharmacy remains the same. One of your medications, previously covered by insurance, may no longer be covered resulting in a payment of the full cash price. Be sure to confirm your medication coverage with your insurance provider.

We look forward to answering more of your questions next month!

Don’t forget, if you have a specific question or topic that interests you, please let us know by emailing us at: [email protected].

Graduating From Hospice: Is That Possible?By Dennis Ondrejka, PhD, RN, Bereavement & Care Counselor at Valor HospiceCare

There are many views regarding what happens when you, as a patient, are invited to join a hospice program to receive comfort care. Some think this is the ab-solute sign of death or even being given medicine to rush a death. Most people come to a hospice program because their health care provider is suggesting hospice after exhau- sting all current treatments avail-able to treat their disease. When this happens, all of those diverse thoughts go racing through your head and some may not be true.

In general terms, people who go to hospice no longer want medical interventions that are not support-ing a quality or significant exten-sion of life. They just want to get out of that revolving door that no longer has value. Focused compassion sounds really nice at this point. The increased care is very comprehensive coming from a physician, nurse, social worker, and spiritual support person every week as needed. Medications are aimed at pain control and reduced confusion and anxiety. Even the family gets personal attention with having a place to talk about their fears and concerns.

However, the title of this article is: Graduating from Hospice, which means the patient may have changes that show a recovery toward a healthier state. Some-times it is just the unique aspects of that patient and the disease that was taking their life—but now is not pro-gressing. In some cases, we suspect it comes from the reduced tension of cure, increased personal support,

and a spiritual well-being that takes on a new life. The patient has some level of remission that does not look like they are dying, but having some recovery. It may not be a full remission, but the progression towards death is no longer imminent.

So, yes, we do graduate some patients from hospice. Most come and stay with us until it is their time to physically go. It is not about making something happen, but rather it is about being with that patient until they leave us in death or as a graduate of hospice. The latter makes for reflective evening chats around the fireplace with a glass of wine. Either way, hospice

staff honor and bless the patient and their family for allowing them to be a part of their journey.

Is Your Pet Drinking Too Much Water?By Hannah Bigelow, DVM

We all need water to survive, but what happens when we start drinking too much water? Excess water in-take, or polydipsia, can be the result of or a cause for polyuria - excessive urine output. I often have patients (canine & feline) that present for increased water in-take and/or excessive urination. Polyuria/polydipsia (PU/PD) can be a clinical sign in many disease processes. PU/PD can be caused by something as simple as a urinary tract infection or urinary crystals. However, there are more serious conditions that result in the same clinical signs, such as endocrine disorders, renal disease, and even cancer.

Animals with PU most commonly present to their vet-erinarian for having accidents in the house or needing to be let out more often than usual. Sometimes owners don’t even realize their pet is drinking more water than usual until urinary issues are discussed. Measuring

daily water intake will establish whether an animal is polydipsic. Normal water intake is ~90-100 ml/kg/day for dogs and ~45-60 ml/kg/day for cats. If you have more than one pet drinking out of the same dish, con-sider separating the pet in question from the others for 1-2 days in order to better assess water intake.

Once you know your pet is urinating excessively and drinking too much water - what’s next? Doing a com-prehensive blood work panel and urinalysis will help diagnose the cause. Sometimes radiographs and/or ultrasound may be warranted.

By performing these tests, we can determine the root of the problem much more quickly and accurately than a trial and error approach. If your pet is exhibiting signs of PU/PD, talk to your vet today - together, we can improve the life of every pet, every time!

SOS ProgramDental Health Stats for Seniors

January’s Safety Orientation Seminar

“Oral & Dental Healthcare for Seniors”Wed., January 22 at 10am, East Center

Oral and dental healthcare challenges and possible affordable options for senior citizens is the topic for the next SOS Seminar. A representative from the Arizona Dental Association will discuss local oppor- tunities and a representative from Coyote Dental will be there to discuss dental services available in Mexico.

The seminar is free and open to the public. Sponsored by SpotRx Pharmacy, it will be recorded and posted on the internet for those unable to attend. Refreshments will be served.

Please register in advance at any GVR center with a Customer Service Representative (East Center, West Center, Las Campanas or Canoa Hills) or by calling (520) 625-3440. Reference CR#45543.

According to Pima Council on Aging (our local branch of the National Council on Aging):

• By 2020, one in four Arizonans will be 60 or older.

• According to the most recent Pima Council on Aging Community Survey, affordable dental care is among the top ten concerns for older people in Pima County.

• According to the Center for Disease Control, 1 in 5 older Americans suffers from untreated dental decay. In Arizona, 12.5% of adults 65 years or older have total teeth loss and 33% have lost six or more teeth.

• Among Americans older than 65 years, 70% have periodontal disease, and 1 in 4 are toothless.

• Only 40% of people older than 65 see a dentist annually despite increased risk of oral disease, gum disease, and cavities.

• Once retired, individuals lose dental insurance that had been provided by their employer.

• Dental care is not covered by Medicare, so many seniors do not go to a dentist because they have to pay out-of-pocket (almost 70% of older people lack dental coverage.)

• Forgoing dental care can have serious long-term consequences. Poor oral health affects an individual’s ability to speak, eat healthy foods and feel confident in how they look.

• Taking good care of teeth can decrease the risk of serious problems such as heart attack, stroke and poorly controlled diabetes.

• Putting off oral and dental healthcare care will likely cost money — and pain — down the road. Chances are, the person is going to end up in the ER in absolute pain or dealing with an infection.

A Report From Your GVR Board PresidentBy Charlie Sieck, President, GVR Board of Directors

On November 20th, 2019, the GVR Board of Directors passed a budget for the year 2020. Some of the key features of the 2020 budget are;• Dues are the same as last year, • Provisions for employee merit increases,• Maintenance of our existing facilities,• Increases funding for initiatives. Some of the initiatives included in the budget are;5-year strategic plan - The 5-year plan includes more than GVR construction plans for the next 5-years.This plan will include an evaluation of the wants and needs of our membership, identification of opportunities for facility improvements, and where funding for these changes will come from.

Expansion of the Clay Studio - The Clay Club is one of many popular clubs and has over 400 members. The Clay Club is space-constrained which limits intro- ductory classes needed for new members to join the

Club. The budget includes funding to expand the clay studio by using an adjacent conference room. This expansion will no doubt create additional chal-lenges in scheduling conference rooms which are already in short supply. The Planning & Evaluation Committee is studying options to address the short-age of rooms across all of GVR rec centers.

Repurposing of the Desert Hills shuffleboard space - The 2020 budget includes funds to repur-pose the Desert Hills underutilized shuffleboard space adjacent to the swimming pool. One use of this space could be for expansion of the fitness room.

All initiatives will require additional Board approval before the funds can be spent. The important point is that the funds have been included in the 2020 budget. If everything goes as planned, we will still have a surplus of $257,787 at the end of 2020.

First Presidential ElectionJanuary 7, 1789

America’s first presidential election - Voters cast

ballots to choose state electors; only white men who

owned property were allowed to vote. As expected,

George Washington won the election and was sworn

into office on April 30, 1789.

As it did in 1789, the United States still uses the

Electoral College system, established by the U.S. Con-

stitution, which today gives all American citizens over

the age of 18 the right to vote for electors, who in turn

vote for the president. The president and vice presi-

dent are the only elected federal officials chosen by

the Electoral College instead of by direct popular vote.

First Superbowl - Packers vs. ChiefsJanuary 15, 1967

Green Bay Packers of the National Football League

(NFL) versus the American Football League (AFL)’s

Kansas City Chiefs - 60 million people tuned in to watch

the action unfold on television and with the Packers

heavily favored to win the game, the Chiefs managed

to keep it close for the first half. By halftime Green

Bay was ahead just 14-10. The Packers, however,

proceeded to break the game wide open with touch-

down after touchdown in the second half, smashing

the Kansas City Chiefs 35-10, in the first-ever AFL-NFL

World Championship, later known as Super Bowl I, at

Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles.

GVR Board Candidate Application Questions/Answers1. Directors serve for three-year terms. Do you anticipate maintaining your GVR membership and residing in GVR’s jurisdiction for the next three years?

All Candidates ............................................ YES

2. Time commitment can vary significantly depending upon the business before the Board and a Director’s committee participation. Typ-ically, the Board and committees hold regular meetings once a month, but additional meetings are often scheduled. Are you able to make this type of time commitment? Please list any time conflicts you may have.

Bachelor ........ I can attend any meetings, on any day, my until 3:30 pm as I have to be to work at 4:00 pm.Bell ................ Travel plans April 1 - May 9, 2020.Campfield ...... Monday and Friday afternoonsCoon .............. An occasional vacationDerr ............... Yes, most likely able to meet all scheduled and ad hoc meetings. Thank you.Howard.......... Yes, I am able to make the time com-mitment and have no conflicts.Kelley ............ I have no other residences than Green Valley. I do enjoy traveling and have typically been away for 2 months out of the year. I also work for about 6 weeks during tax season.Lawless ......... yesMauser .......... No conflicts. Able to attend meetings.Sprinkle ......... Yes to commitment. No time conflicts.Tobiason ........ I retired May 2019, thus have ample time to serve the GVR community. I do have a standing volunteer commitment the third Wednesday of every month in Tucson with the Foster Care Review Board.

3. What best describes your motivation for joining our Board of Driectors?

Bachelor: My motivation is to give back time to the members of GVR, to work on behalf of them.

Bell: I believe that our democracy is built on the concept of citizens donating our time for the greater good of our nation, state and community. GVR is one of the main reasons I enjoy living in Green Valley so I want to use my education, computer, communication, and negotiation skills to support GVR.

Campfield: After being on the BOD for a year, I am quite distressed at the lack of fiduciary care and out-right disregard for the rule of law shown by the current Board of Directors. I moved to Green Valley specifically because of the breadth and depth of GVR program offerings, and the obvious care of the staff in main-taining the facilities, and I want to keep it that way. My whole career was spent in policy-making positions, being on or working with boards of directors.

Coon: I want to see GVR make smart decisions so it will be able to maintain the current facilities and activ-ities we have now at the high standards we have come to expect. I also want to see GVR set realistic and achievable goals for future growth. As a current Di-rector, I look forward to a full implementation of Policy Governance. I want to see the Board become a more cohesive group that makes decisions based on bal-ancing expectations of our membership and the ability of the corporation to meet those expectations. Most GVR members choose to retire here partly because of the activities that GVR offers. Past GVR boards have worked to keep GVR financially strong and receptive to member’s needs. I want to continue that legacy.

Derr: I’ve heard there is some dissension on the GVR Board currently. I have no particular “dog in the fight” and I would hope that my mediation/behavioral health experience might prove helpful in matters conflictual and complex. This may be naive, if not immodest, but I have been said to have an “open mind” when it comes to analyzing difficult issues. Thank you.

Howard: I am interested in serving on the Board to participate in the governance of GVR to preserve and enhance the variety of clubs, organized activities, building and recreational facilities that are the essence of Green Valley.

Kelley: I want to make a significant contribution to my community using the knowledge and skills I have developed in my lifetime. I feel that GVR is a very important part of the Green Valley community and would like to help guide it’s course.

Lawless: I would like to help guide the future of GVR in the direction that members want while considering wishes from both the majority & the minority. I would like to help ensure that GVR remains a fiscally viable & responsible entity. I would like to help mend the fences between the different interest groups.

Mauser: I am truly concerned with the direction the current Board has taken in the last two years -- and I see the need to get members elected who are looking to maintain the quality as well as the reputation of GVR.

Sprinkle: It’s not about me. I have considerable experience in organizational governance which moti-vates me to lend that experience to GVR.

Tobiason: I have resided in GVR for the past 16 years and greatly appreciate the array of recreation, social, educational, and cultural opportunities afforded to members. I especially appreciate what GVR has be-come under Dr. Blumenthal’s leadership. I care deeply about keeping GVR fiscally sound and future-focused so as to continue to attract new retirees to Green Valley.

4. It is important that you are able to com-municate electronically and have access to a computer. On a scale of 1 (novice) to 5 (very experienced), how would you rate your technical

skills with computers, teleconferencing, video conferencing, etc.?

5. Please list any other boards, committees, task forces or volunteer activities in which you have participated in the last ten years.

Bachelor: I have attended the Fiscal Affairs Committee meetings, Board Affairs Committee meetings and the Board of Directors meetings since 2016. I am a mem-ber of the 2019 Fiscal Affairs Committee and was on the GVR Survey Committee in 2018. Prior to moving to Green Valley I went through the Bd. of Directors chairs for the Calaveras County Board of Realtors.

Bell: Alliance 4 Action Core, and Leadership Team member, and Outreach Coordinator. Democratic Pre-cinct Committee Person. Currently, Ventura Neighbor-hood Watch Chairperson, and member of the Ventura Social Committe, and The Democratic Club of The Santa Rita Area. BOD Books for Classrooms

Derr: Have volunteered for three years as: an appointed HOA Director (Canoa Seca Estates); HOA Secretary and webmaster, elected to three-year term in our HOA last year. Prior to retirement on December 31, 2015 I served on the Board for the Nebraska Heavy-Highway chapter of the AGC (Associ-ated General Contractors) and was Chapter President for two years.

national research on under represented populations. For the past 5 years I was also a board member for the Nurse Partnership program, a nurse visiting program for at risk families.

6. Briefly explain how your education and/or previous life experiences will be beneficial to you as a Director.

Bachelor: I was the Business Manager and/or Director of Fiscal Services for various School Districts in the California Bay Area. That plus my attendance at GVR committee meetings for the last 3 years are all ben-eficial to me in my desire to run for the GVR Board of Directors.

Bell: I have a Masters of Science in Management from Albertus Magnus College in New Haven Connecticut, and I am fluent in Microsoft Office and comfortable using a PC or a MAC. I have managed budgets, materials, and personnel, and worked as a Systems Analyst. During my career I worked on many teams developing negotiation skills, and the ability to reach consensus with others. I believe that the skills I honed during my working years will be an asset to the GVR BOD.

Campfield: The last 20 years of my career was spent as CFO and Board Member of small and early stage technology companies, which required skills in plan-ning, execution and teamwork to achieve company goals. I also was CFO of larger and more stable companies, including a 77-person law firm and office furniture retailer. Education: BA, University of Califor-nia, Berkeley; MBA, University of Washington; CPA certification.

Coon: I have a dual Associate Degree in Data Pro-cessing and Accounting. I worked for 18 years for a major property casualty insurance company. My last major assignment was managing a project to analyze, design, program, test and implement a multi-line, multi-state, underwriting system. This project spanned 7 years and required working with almost all depart-ments of the company to analyze all requirements and the business processes we had to support plus super-vising a large staff of programmers and analysts. My career taught me to be a team player and to build a team that supports each other through whatever chal-lenges you run into. I also learned that you need to

34understand the big picture, the goals, the full effect of a decision – not just a specific part you were asked to handle.

Derr: I have most of the usual education labels (BA and M.S.), but I guess my most useful life experience has been as a US Dept. of Defense Behavioral Health Consultant, overseas, for the military returning from combat. I also worked at the Tucson VA Hospital with veterans struggling with addiction and homelessness. I am a licensed pilot and currently hold a Marriage & Family Therapist license from the California. I am a relentless techie-guy and have enjoyed working on data troubleshooting, etc.

Howard: I have BS degree in Construction Science from the University of Nebraska. I was in the construc-tion business for 45 years. Three years with a small commercial contractor in Omaha, NE. Twenty five years with a large, publically traded construction company in the Washington, D. C. area. Seventeen years with a major highway contractor in Lincoln, NE. I was in exec-utive management for nearly 30 years, the last seven-teen as President of the highway contractor.

Kelley: I am a retired CPA, former Certified Financial Planner, former Registered Investment Advisor, former Board Director of Trust Industrial Bank, former SVP and Senior Trust Officer of First Trust Corporation. The above mentioned positions and many other positions have provided me with much experience and devel-oped skill sets which will allow me to be an effective member of the GVR Board. I have a BA in Economics and a Masters of Taxation from University of Denver.

Lawless: With an accounting background & working in the investment business for nearly 20 yrs. with a Series 7 license I believe I will have a clear under-standing of GVR financials. I have managed my own home for many years dealing with all of the issues that entails. I have managed my own finances for many years including a variety of investments. Being a young widow I have dealt with many of the prob-lems that our elderly have gone through or will be going through.

Mauser: As a Controller of an international company my background in accounting will serve me well when dealing with the financial aspect of GVR. I also have

experience in relating to people with different cultural and ideological backgrounds.

Sprinkle: From supervisory positions on LAPD, to engaging tax payers while executing duties of Asses-sor, to dealing with all matters of a municipality while serving as Selectman (New England term for Town Councilor), to being an active voice on several boards of director, to interacting with Statewide municipal representatives while on legislative policy committee in the Maine State Capitol; I have learned to stand tall for what is right and fair while dealing with all manner of tests of my resolve.

Tobiason: I have master’s degrees in community counseling, rehabilitation counseling, and a doctorate in psychology. I have about 30 years working in the field of community mental health, the local juvenile court and multiple volunteers activities which have benefited at-risk populations in the communities in which I have resided. I understand the psychology of individuals and groups, have counseling and conflict resolutions skills.

7. Describe your use of GVR facilities and participation in GVR activities in the past two years and how your GVR involvement has prepared you to serve on the Board of Directors.

Bachelor: I have taken a number of art type of classes, I have used fitness centers/pools and am a member of the GVR Singles Club.

Bell: I use the fitness centers and I am a member of the Camera and Computer Clubs. While using GVR facilities and during social events I converse with other members about their GVR experiences and their future desires for GVR and Green Valley. Based on commu-nication with GVR members the thing I believe most members want is a BOD that is able to work together for the good of all GVR members.

Campfield: I have lived in Green Valley for about 3 1/2 years. I play duplicate bridge several times a week and work out at fitness centers. I play pickleball, hike and belong to the computer club. I have taken some GVR classes also attend as many entertainment programs as I can. I would belong to more clubs if I had more time!

Coon: My experience as a Director and on the Planning & Evaluation committee has given me great appreci-ation for the scope and hard work that the GVR staff puts into maintaining our facilities and serving our membership every day. For me, it has also highlighted the challenges of serving a diverse membership with a wide range of interests and balancing the use of our facilities to accommodate as many activities as possible.

Derr: My wife and I use the GVR facilities quite fre-quently: she does line-dancing and we both workout at Canoa Hills. I recently trained with GVR on resusci-tation procedures. I enjoy swimming at Canoa Ranch during inclement weather. I suppose these experiences have provided some personal insight by just talking to many GVR members re. current complaints, gentle “grousing” and general commenting on GVR. As to these experiences “preparing me for serving on the BOD, I sense they MAY be useful. Thanks

Howard: I am a member of the Pickleball Club, Hiking Club and Woodworkers. My wife and I participate in various GVR card groups, enjoy movie nights at the West Center and utilize several swimming pools. We moved here in 2018 and became permanent residents in 2019 because of the weather and the variety of activities and facilities that GVR offers. I am prepared to serve on the Board in order to utilize my skills and background to help assure the vitality and long term future of GVR.

Kelley: I enjoy the aquatic facilities at the Las Cam-panas Rec Center as well as the fitness room. I am regular attendee of nature oriented classes and “nature” lectures at GVR centers. I am a member of the AmigOs club. And we enjoy attending several of the performances provided by GVR.

Lawless: I have taken pickleball lessons & have played a few games. I have taken a pottery class. I recently took an orientation at a fitness center with the goal of using it regularly. I have enjoyed several shows at West Center. I have participated in the hiking club. I have attended a few art shows or markets at West Center. I have attended several board meetings & a few committee meetings so I believe I understand somewhat what kind of commitment is expected.

Mauser: Member of Pickleball Club Co-Founder and

Current President of GVR Needlearts Club I attend most committee/board meetings throughout the year and have a good working knowledge of the organiza-tion’s bylaws and policies. I have worked well in the past with GVR staff and I believe that GVR’s greatest asset is our employees. We must work with them - and not against them - to keep GVR flourishing as one of the top retirement communities in the country.

Sprinkle: Member: Computer Club, Marshal Arts Club (now forming), Garden Club, New England Club. Regularly use Canoa Hills fitness center and walk Canoe Hills Trails.

Tobiason: I love the wide array of GVR facilities and have used the dance floors (my husband & I started the Argentine Tango Club), we ran the GVR Dance Club in the past, and we are currently seeing if there is interest in a GVR Martial Arts Club (which there appears to be). In addition, I have used the pools and gyms in the past.

End of responses.

They are common questions we get frequently and there has been much controversy and confusion re-garding Air Duct Cleaning/Air Duct Sealing for HVAC systems. Often, homeowners receive “$49.95 duct cleaning” specials from so-called “Blow & Go” organi-zations that lead one to believe that only clean ducts lead to a clean home environment. Unfortunately, many unsuspecting homeowners have bought into the fearful idea that their ducts must be crawling with nasty spores and other harmful creepy things. Let’s take a moment for a reality check...

What are Air Ducts? Air ducts can be described as the HVAC system’s distribution system. There are supply ducts – those that supply cool or hot air to the living spaces – and return ducts that pull air from the space and return it to the air handler to be heated or cooled and then re-circulated. They may be square or round, and made of metal or composite materials.

What are the key elements of a HVAC system? The typical HVAC system can best be understood by comparing its key elements to the circulatory system of the human body. The heart of the HVAC system is the compressor (the unit that sits outside) and air handler. These components work together to heat or cool the air - then push the air through the ductwork (arteries) for distribution to the living spaces. Air fil-ters are installed to filter out airborne impurities (liver) like pollen and dust. Filters can be made of fiber or foam, can be electronic, or a combination of the two.

A clean, sealed duct system offers the best air quality and efficiencyIt is most important that the HVAC system be looked at as a complete operating system. Ductwork is only one component. First, the ducts should be examined

from the inside, out - not just as far a worker can reach, but by equipment that travels inside the ducts discovering potential dust pockets, kinks, air leaks, and other problems. Once completed, the homeowner will have thorough documentation (including pictures) on the status of the system and what needs to be done – if anything – to improve air quality and main-tain system performance.

If it is determined that duct cleaning is necessary, all air handling system components including cooling coils, should be disassembled and cleaned by professional HVAC technicians. All air filters should be checked, and replaced as recommended by your HVAC contractor. If filters are changed regularly, and the HVAC system is maintained properly, the need for duct cleaning is minimal.

When duct cleaning is needed, a reputable HVAC contractor should do the job. Why? They have the equipment to visually check out and document the complete duct system. They also can seal the small air leaks that are found in every duct system, to ensure the system is most energy efficient. It is important to note that cleaning and inspecting ducts by unqualified “Blow & Go” businesses can actually damage ducts and compromise the HVAC system performance.

The good newsMost accredited HVAC contractors offer complete system evaluations and efficiency checks that will determine the need for duct cleaning, and filter selec-tion and replacement, as part of their service offering or maintenance contract. Sometimes special air quality requirements are necessary for those who are highly allergenic, or if air quality contains high levels of airborne pollutants. An accredited HVAC contractor can install a variety of electronic, high efficiency, or

Should I Get My Air Ducts Cleaned? What is Aeroseal?By Green Valley Cooling & Heating

other filter types to help maintain these special air quality standards.

Duct Sealing with Aeroseal Aeroseal duct sealing is a patented technology that tackles leaks from the inside out by using an UL tested and approved sealing material. It’s clean, safe, and guaranteed for 10 years in residential application. A certified Aeroseal technician cab inspect and evaluate your central air duct system and recommend ways to maximize savings and improve your home comfort or improve building efficiency and solve air flow problems.

To start the Aeroseal duct sealing process, all ceiling or floor registers are replaced with foam plugs. A small access hole is cut into the supply or return air plenum and a temporary collar is attached. The air conditioning indoor coil, fan, and furnace are temporarily blocked with a foam plug to avoid the entrance of any seal-ing particles into the equipment. Once properly sealed, the patented injection machine is connected to the air duct system using a flexible plastic tube. The exclusive Aeroseal duct sealing system injects adhesive particles into the air duct system. The particles travel through the ducts seeking holes and cracks, where they attach directly onto the edges, effectively sealing it without coating the inside of the ductwork.

Once the Aeroseal process is complete, the technician will again check the duct system for leakage. A sealing certificate will be generated by the computer to show duct leakage amounts before and after sealing, a graph of the sealing process, plus heating or cooling capacity improvement. Aeroseal can reduce duct leakage by up to 90% and save a homeowner up to $1000 a year in energy costs or building up to 30% of HVAC energy use.

GVR Tennis Club

GVR Tennis Club’s1st Wooden Rackets & White Togs’

Summer Social

The event was played at the West Center courts on Saturday, October 19th and was followed by a ‘Brats and Wurst’ BBQ in celebration of ‘Oktoberfest’. A great time was had by all who came to play and watch a bygone era of the game when we played with wooden rackets, generally strung with gut rather than nylon. Back in the day, most players wore white including long white trousers for men - some even wore ties and colorful hats! Women sometimes played in long skirts, also, with elegant hats!

The wooden rackets lack the power of the modern tennis racket, resulting in a game more of finesse and longer rallies. It also requires more focus on making contact with the ball on the center of the racket or strings to avoid the inevitable miss-hit! The upside to a day of playing with a wooden racket and focusing on making good contact with the ball on to the center of your racket.
