ABOUT TEN80 EDUCATIONTen80 is a team of STEM, education and business professionals dedicated to cultivating a STEM Ecosystem that unites and inspires the next generation of entrepreneurial thinkers and innovators, empowering ALL students to thrive in a world of constant innovation.

Ten80’s first engineer-educator teams formed in the late 1990’s to champion Project-Based Learning that Doesn’t Forget the Learning through professional development. Over the last 20+ years, through NSF grants, longitudinal studies and close partnerships with K-12 educators, Ten80 has developed a comprehensive, data-driven philosophy and framework * for STEM education that can engage and serve all students.

Today, Ten80 is a leader in STEM Education, named one of four Exemplary and Ready-to-Scale Initiatives by Change the Equation & STEMWorks. Ten80 partners with K-12 schools and organizations to initiate a comprehensive STEM system or strengthen existing programs through these areas of focus:

1. Curriculum = CLUB, CLASS or CAMP formats

2. Ten80 Challenge Competitions that motivate students and reinforce the habits of mind, concepts and skills cultivated through the curriculum. Ten80 students are eligible to compete in the National STEM League (NSL).

3. Professional Development

4. Custom Event & Experience Production

Ten80 = 1,080 = 3 × 360Ten80 represents a stronger society through the promise of STEM Education for all.

Ten80’s logo is a Venn diagram. A Venn diagram uses closed curves to represent complex, interdependent relationships among sets. Each closed curve is 360 degrees.

Curriculum & Competitions Ten80’s Student STEM Challenges Curricula and competitions help students (and educators) cultivate 21st Century Skills through team-oriented challenges. Every Student STEM Challenge addresses a different set of concepts and skills. All of them help students understand and actively participate in the innovation process that drives today’s economy, civil society and public institutions.

* Ten80’s Innovation FrameworkUpper elementary and secondary programs are based on a framework of innovation. Innovation is a process that purposefully combines these four elements: (1) the engineering process that requires (2) specific content knowledge and skills, the (3) enterprise process which is essentially prototyping a business and (4) leadership principles that are necessary to turn truly innovative ideas into reality.

Custom Event & Experience Production Ten80 works with industry partners like the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) and Specialty Equipment Manufacturing Association (SEMA) to reach tens of thousands of young people.  Together we identify the skills embedded in a partner’s priorities, whether it is optimizing performance using data or designing an innovative 3D part and position those skills as the centerpiece for learning experiences.

INTRO TO PHYSICAL COMPUTING

Scope, Standards & ApplicationsThis Intro to Physical Computing course is a full curriculum framework, not just a set of activities, and is fully mapped to the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics & ELA, Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and Computer Science Teacher’s Association (CSTA) Level 3 standards with pacing guides to include Level 1 and 2 standards.

Implement the curriculum as a standalone 1-semester computer science foundation course or be integrated into science and engineering elective courses. Bundle with Autonomous Vehicle curriculum such as the Student Rover Challenge to create a full-year course.

Competition & Collaboration Overview (Optional)Submit your top culminating challenges to the National STEM League’s (NSL) Online Points Race. Receive feedback from Ten80’s professionals and learn how your projects compare to other CS submissions. This course can also help students perform better in other NSL series.

Computer Science FrameworkTen80’s Intro to Physical Computing curriculum bridges engineering design and computer science with business modeling and real-world applications. Students learn fundamental computational thinking and logical problem-solving skills while working with different aspects of CS including coding, physical computing (i.e. software and hardware integration) and team-based project work.

Intro to Physical Computing OverviewStudents develop problem-solving and computational thinking skills to develop good practices that are universal across programming languages.

In this 1-semester course, students work with a mix of off-screen simulations, drag-and-drop and text-based programming. This course uses the Arduino programming language which is based on C, a widely used programming language. All concepts are universal and not language specific.

Students will understand algorithms, binary and hexadecimal number systems, data types, decision loops, functions, sensors, and wireless communications that are critical concepts in engineering and computer science. After “mastering” the software and hardware concepts and skills, including basic circuitry lessons, students engage in a culminating design project. Several project options are provided.

“SYSTEMS THINKING” THROUGH ROBOTICS

One Ultimate ChallengeStudents integrate electrical, mechanical and computer systems, the three systems at the core of every robot, to meet a series of challenges that parallel autonomous vehicle (AV) operations on our neighborhood streets and highways.

Two AV TechnologiesNovice Robo Racecar is a beginner curriculum that uses the Micro:bit platform. The technology is an 1:16 scale car that students assemble. The autonomous challenges mirror those of driverless cars that may soon dominate our neighborhood streets and highways.

Advanced Robo Racecar is an add-on kit with basic instructions on how to install and code an Arduino to automate a Student Racing Challenge car. This kit requires precise soldering and wiring.

StandardsThe Student AV Challenge is aligned to the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics & ELA, Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and Computer Science Teacher’s Association (CSTA) Level 3 standards.

Curriculum OverviewThe Novice Robo RaCeCar curriculum leads students through hands-on physical computing activities that address fundamental computational literacy concepts. Those lessons learned are applied to automate the RC car in stages, ultimately transferring decision-making from the human driver to the robot.

The Advanced Robo RaCeCar curriculum uses a more advanced materials kit that extends their physical manipulation of electronic components and strengthens their ability to solve challenges through logical and systems-oriented thinking.

Enterprise & Innovation units motivate students to manage their time and resources, to market themselves and to develop 21st Century Skills like leadership that are required to turn ideas into realities.

Competition Overview (Optional)Robo Racecar teams can compete in the AV Challenge series of the National STEM League (NSL) through Face-to-Face (F2F) Competitions and the Online Points Race. Points leaders and F2F competition winners are invited to the NSL Finals.

Curriculum OverviewStudents fly, configure, reverse engineer, design, build and code.

The Student UAV Challenge curriculum begins with principles of aeronautics and flight for a variety of industries (ex. film vs. inspection). It ultimately leads students through a series of focus lessons that reverse engineer how each system of the UAV brain works. The culminating challenge is to replace the stock system with a customized Arduino-based flight controller.

In working with electrical components, students develop skills like soldering and critical thinking through troubleshooting.

Key focus lessons dive into concepts such as aerodynamics, electricity, computer programming and physical laws of motion.

As with all Student STEM Challenges, these concepts and skills are cultivated through the framework of innovation. Students model a business or organization that applies the technology to improve society.

Competition Overview (Optional)UAV teams can compete in the National STEM League (NSL) through Face-to-Face (F2F) Competitions and the Online Points Race. Points leaders and F2F competition winners are invited to the NSL Finals.

Standards AlignmentsAll programs align to the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics and English Language Arts and Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). The Student UAV Challenge also aligns to CSTA level 3 standards.

Available Formats• CLASS: Individual student accounts

• CLUB: Team accounts

• CAMP: 30 contact hours

Technology The base technology is a remote controlled quadcopter. Focus lessons use electronics components and an Arduino microprocessor.

The Ultimate ChallengeUnmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are driving one of the most exciting areas of innovation today. Pilots, engineers and entrepreneurial leaders are teaming up to change the way we think of videography, disaster recovery, agriculture, conservation, marketing and so much more.

After exploring basics of aeronautics and developing skills as pilots, students hack into a standard UAV brain, replace it with a custom programmable flight controller and configure it to fly different missions.

The National STEM League (NSL) is a practice league for future professionals, one in which students learn the skills to thrive in a team-oriented atmosphere while also learning why algebra and physics are useful tools for daily life. Students prepare for competition through classes and clubs using Ten80’s Student STEM Challenge curriculum. Schools and organizations in their startup year of Student Racing , AV or UAV Challenge are automatically entered into the Face-to-Face (F2F) series and though competition is optional, it is highly recommended!

Two Series: F2F or OnlineFace-to-Face (F2F) Competitions combine high-tech STEM fair and high-drama head-to-head competition. Invitational winners are invited to the NSL Finals. An additional fee is required for entry into NSL Regional and Finals competitions.

Online Points Race: No Travel Required! Between September and May, students share work to get feedback from remote STEM mentors and earn points. Points categories include Race Engineering, Marketing, Data-Driven Design, etc. Points leaders are invited to the NSL Finals.

Three NSL Challenges. Three Technology Platforms. Teams compete in one of these Challenges:

• Student Racing Challenge

• Student AV Challenge

• Student UAV Challenge

See the order forms and online store for details on your startup and renewal years.

Competition & Curriculum Categories Teams in all NSL Challenges compete in these categories.

• Head to Head: Racing, UAV and AV teams compete in dramatic and strategic events. Innovation teams pitch their business plan.

• Innovation through Data-Driven Design: Teams get and stay ahead through Research & Development.

NATIONAL STEM LEAGUE COMPETITION KITSTEN80 RACE RAILSTen80 has taken over production of the best portable racetrack for indoor or outdoor use. The new Ten80 Race Rail System is a professional quality, lightweight RC competition track that is both portable and durable.

Though National STEM League teams can use tape or PVC piping to make tracks, this system is a great option for organizations that hope to host local or regional competitions at one location or at rotating venues.

The Ten80 Race Rail System allows you to create your own race course using modular race rails and domes. • Each rail is 6 linear feet.• Create 10 linear feet by connecting two rails (overlap is 1 ft.). • Create 12 linear feet by connecting two rails using a dome.• Create corners and intersections by connecting rails to domes. • Create a barrier wall by doubling up rails as shown to the right.

Most Student Racing Challenge roadcourse tracks, oval tracks, dragstrips and Student AV Challenge mazes can be built with a medium system. Some smaller racetracks, rover mazes and dragstrips can be built with a small system. The large system allows you to create any track and double up rails to create jump barriers.

Robo Racecar TechnologyThe Novice Robo Racecar is a beginner curriculum that uses the Micro:bit platform. The technology is an 1:16 scale car kit that students assemble. Handling of small parts is required, but soldering is not. The autonomous challenges mirror those of driverless cars that may soon dominate our neighborhood streets and highways.

The Advanced Robo Racecar is an add-on kit for the 1:10 scale Student Racing Challenge RC car. It is a more advanced kit that requires precise soldering and wiring to assemble the Arduino “brain”. This version includes a guide on how to assemble and code the AV, but it is not a full curriculum.
