2020-2021 annual performance report

Dear Rainier Prep Families, The 2020-2021 school year will be one to remember. As we navigated a pandemic, Rainier Prep remained committed to our mission. Despite the challenges of having to learn from home through Google Meet for most of the school year, over 90% of students showed up to school every day. Our whole school average for reading growth during this school year was 1.5 years! When it was time to come back in-person in a hybrid learning model, we were ready! We set out more than six years ago to create Rainier Prep because the reality our students face is greatly alarming. Access to a college degree is the single-most important factor in moving into the American middle class and fully participating in our democracy. Yet, for so many students like ours the odds are stacked against them. Rainier Prep seeks to change the odds by providing a school where each child is well known, challenged, asked to question and wonder, encouraged to be truly curious about their world, and able to build the academic and leadership skills for college and life. As we reflect on the promising results of these last six years, we also look forward to what this unusual school year will bring. We are confident that the Rainier Prep community we build and sustain together this year can be a source of support, strength and growth for all of us. In June of 2021 we graduated our fourth class of 8th graders and sent them off to high school—turning a dream into reality, as each of our students pursue their pathway to a college degree and a life of leadership. Although we did not have a traditional graduation, each student and family was celebrated through our online and in-person “Drive-Thru” graduation. Our most recent graduates join over 300 alum attending public and private high schools throughout the greater Seattle area. What follows this letter is our Annual Performance Report for the 2020-2021 school year. We encourage you to reach out to us for any questions, concerns or ideas. Together, we are building an amazing school community that can positively impact our world. Sincerely, Karen Lobos Morgan Fernandez Executive Director School Principal 2020-2021 ANNUAL PERFORMANCE

OUR BUILDING

LEARNING DURING COVID-19

Air flow survey was conducted by Neudorfer Engineers to ensure readiness for our in-person reopening to hybrid learning in the spring of 2021. As a result, exhaust fans were added, replaced, or maintained. Air purifiers were added to each classroom, and air filters were replaced.

Individual student desks allowing for proper distancing for Covid-19 safety were purchased to replace previous two-student desks. Off-site storage was acquired to store school furniture allowing for more distancing in the school building.

Several white boards were replaced and walls were painted in many classrooms to make the spaces more welcoming.

Our relative low cost facilities continue to allow us to maximize program resources.

Our goal during the COVID-19 pandemic is to make sure all families and students are as safe as possible while providing meaningful learning through a community that redefines and reimagines what school looks like. We are proud to share that Rainier Prep was able to

provide continuous learning to ALL Rainier Prep students in compliance with OSPI guidelines through

the 2020-2021 school year. Over 90% of students attended school every day and our whole school

average for reading growth during the 2020-2021 school year was 1.5 years of growth.
