    Foreword

    #EUGreenBiz

    We live in challenging times.

Europe is facing crises on several fronts as the coronavirus pandemic has aggravated not only health, but societal, ecological and economic challenges as well. Europe’s response is the European Green Deal. It remains our growth strategy, and is now complemented by a massive programme to restart the EU economy. Together, these new initiatives will tackle the most important environmental and climate-related problems, transforming the Union into a modern, resource-efficient and competitive economy where there are no net emissions of greenhouse gases by the year 2050.

Innovation is the major enabler that will drive this new agenda, helping Europe address the major socio-economic challenges and delivering a more efficient economy with greener and more sustainable ways of doing business.

The European Business Awards for the Environment (EBAE) prove that many eco-innovative solutions are already at hand. The Awards recognise businesses delivering innovation in the real world, with benefits for citizens on the ground. Finalists are innovative, competitive and successful. Through management, product, service and process innovations, by strengthening links between business and biodiversity, or through collaboration with a developing country, they all produce maximum economic value with minimum environmental impact.

This year’s 94 entrants, who are all finalists in national competitions, come from a broad spectrum of sectors; from textile to tourism and from agriculture to retail. They come from many Member States and from companies of all sizes, from multinationals to micro-SMEs.

They prove once again that whatever the size of your company, and wherever you are based,

economic growth and environmental protection can go hand in hand. I am delighted to share this array of best practice – they are an inspiration to us all.

    Congratulations to all the finalists!

About the European Business Awards for the EnvironmentSince its launch in 1987, the European Business Awards for the Environment (EBAE) highlight eco-innovative practices, processes and products from all sectors of business in the EU and candidate/ acceding countries.

The competition has five award categories:• Management - with separate awards for

micro/small and medium/large entities• Product and Services• Business Process• Developing Country Cooperation• Business and Biodiversity

In each case, the winners are those who are setting an example for others to follow, and who best demonstrate progress through a combination of innovation, environmental benefit, economic viability, social responsibility, and commitment to the cause.

EBAE also acknowledges “Rising Stars”. These are companies which have made a particular impression on the jurors in respect of the exciting

    COVID-19 & the Green Recovery

or innovative nature of their product, process, service, management approach or biodiversity, but where the activities are still at an early stage and as yet unproven; or companies who are pioneers in a national/regional context but not necessarily at a European level.

As Sir David Attenborough said: “The natural world is changing. It is the most precious thing we have and we need to defend it”.

Today, perhaps more than ever, the European Commission understands the important role it has to play in promoting these pioneers who contribute to a transition towards a green economy and inspire citizens to change their lifestyle.

2020 has been a challenging year. Given the disruption caused by the pandemic, the EBAE 2020 applicants, their champions - the National Coordinators - and the jurors, tasked with the impossible, showed impressive resilience and commitment to change.

It is impressive how most businesses nominated, and the network of National Coordinators, worked together to ensure the competition ran as planned. We pass on our best wishes to those nominees who unfortunately were not able to participate at this challenging time.

Europe has set an ambitious agenda for a green recovery: the European Green Deal and the Circular Economy Action Plan amongst other initiatives, with an emphasis on the need for more innovation to achieve a sustainable economic recovery.

Eco-innovation is the enabler that will drive and accelerate a sustainable economic recovery. And this is what EBAE acknowledges – the best for the environment and for business.

elements that distinguish this product or service, showing that there is improvement in environmental performance while evidencing that it performs at least as well as current alternative market solutions.

    • Environmental benefit: there must be clear and quantified evidence of the environmental benefits in terms of increased resource efficiency and reduced environmental impact over the complete life-cycle of the product or service. Information on any life cycle assessment, EU Ecolabel or equivalent should be provided.

    • Social benefit: the product or service must meet the needs of consumers and information should be provided on any wider social benefits (e.g. by providing decent working conditions, safeguarding consumer health, improving quality of life, etc.).

    • Economic benefit: proof must be given of the contribution made by the new product or service to the organisation’s overall financial performance (e.g. through sales data or credible sales projections) with an estimate of potential market size.

    • Commitment: it should be demonstrated how the product/service fits within the overall environmental vision and mission of the organisation, and how senior management are committed to the marketing and further development of the product or service.

    • Replication potential: there must be clear potential for wider adoption of the innovative aspects of the product or service, and a willingness to share this knowledge and expertise with other organisations, with detail being provided if actions have already been taken.

    • Business and Biodiversity: all entries must explain how biodiversity is addressed at a management level, whether and how biodiversity protection is included in business policy and strategy, and any mechanisms integrated within the organisation to systematically assess and/or value and account for the impacts and dependencies on natural capital.

JURY’S VERDICT:“The jury was very impressed by this highly innovative dyeing process, which provides sustainable benefits that are clearly substantiated by evidence. The development of a waterless dying process for denim textiles has the potential to save vast amounts of water, energy and chemicals. The company is a pioneer in this regard and has persuaded its supply chain partners to cooperate. The jury praised the level of innovation and the potential for replication in one of the world’s most polluting industries.”

This Award is for the successful application of an innovative solution in the area of process and production methods. A new production solution may involve the application of entirely new processes or techniques, or the innovative application of existing ones. In either case, the solution adopted should make a positive contribution to the environment while also contributing to the economic and social aspects of sustainable development.

Award Criteria:• Innovation: the process introduced must include specific

innovative elements that enable more eco-efficient production (e.g. by increasing resource efficiency, or reducing waste and emissions) while performing at least as well, or better, than a comparable alternative.

    • Environmental benefit: the environmental benefits of the new process must be clear and quantified in terms of: energy, water and material consumption, waste, emissions to air, water and soil; CO2 and land use reduction, where relevant. Details of performance improvement, including any validation by external environmental verifiers, should be provided.

    • Social benefit: evidence of wider social benefits expected to arise from the application of the new process should be provided (e.g. employment opportunities, working conditions, or effects on local communities).

    • Economic benefit: proof must be given that the new process is economically viable (e.g. with reference to capital, return on investment and operating costs).

    • Commitment: it should be demonstrated how the process fits within the overall environmental vision and mission of the organisation, and how senior management are committed to its adoption.

    • Replication potential: there must be clear potential for wider adoption of the innovative process, and a willingness to share this knowledge and expertise with other organisations, with detail being provided if actions have already been taken.

    • Business and Biodiversity: all entries must explain how biodiversity is addressed at a management level, whether and how biodiversity protection is included in business policy and strategy, and any mechanisms integrated within the organisation to systematically assess and/ or value and account for the impacts and dependencies on natural capital.

Ondernemers Voor Ondernemers (OVO) supports sustainable economic growth and start-ups in Africa by promoting local entrepreneurship, with a special focus on knowledge transfer between African and Belgian companies and financing opportunities. OVO selects start-ups that use sustainable technology to generate wealth for themselves and for society. They provide access to finance and non-financial business growth support to African entrepreneurs who are too big for microfinance and too small for institutional impact investors. According to OVO, the ingenious creation of high-quality products and services for “bottom of the pyramid” consumers by African companies, often ‘doing more with less’, is an inspiration for Western companies and will help them rethink the conventional ‘more for more’ business model.

The company sets a shining example for agriculture to follow in the future, with proposed measures for a sound biodiversity action plan which can be replicated. This includes aspects such as the restoration of habitats, creation of biotope corridors and improvement of agricultural practices. Agroforestry is supported, which contributes not only to the protection of biodiversity and soil fertility, but also to maintaining and ensuring future resilience against the impacts of climate change. All stakeholder groups such as farmers, start-ups and consumers are involved. The impact and transferability of this entry are high as this is a market leader in spices in Europe.”

The 2020-2021 EBAE Awards Ceremony took place, under exceptional circumstances, during the Annual Circular Economy Stakeholder Online Conference on 3 November 2020. For the first time in its history the Awards Ceremony was 100% online, making it accessible to all, with over 500 viewers . Like countless other initiatives and celebrations around the globe, the Awards Ceremony had to adapt its format and rethink the way it normally works to ensure the security and health of all participants.

Mr Virginijus Sinkevičius, European Commissioner for the Environment, Oceans and Fisheries, opened the Awards Ceremony with Mr Gilles Gantelet, Director of Policy, Coordination and Resources at DG Environment, introducing the Awards. On behalf of the entire European Business Awards for the Environment team, we would like to congratulate the 2020-2021 Finalists and Rising Stars and thank all for their exemplary collaboration and hard work in these uncertain times.
