Opening Session will begin at 9:00 in the Cohen Center Ballroom located on the second floor.
Complimentary coffee and hot tea are available outside of the Cohen Center Ballroom, starting at 8:00, while it lasts.
You may pre-order lunch during 8:00 to 9:00 at the station on the second floor, next to the coffee.

Welcome to the 12th Annual Promising Pathways Conference on Autism Spectrum Disorder!
We are very pleased to welcome our keynote speaker, Carol M. Schall, PhD. Dr. Schall is the Co-Director of the Virginia Commonwealth Uni-versity Autism Center for Excellence, the Director of the Virginia Autism Resource Center, and the Principal Investigator in the development of the Community Based Functional Skills Assessment for Transition Aged Youth with Autism Spectrum Disorders, a grant funded by Autism Speaks. She has over 30 years experience supporting adolescents and adults with ASD as a teacher, administrator, researcher, and consult-ant. Dr. Schall is also the co-developer and research coordinator for
Project SEARCH Plus ASD Supports. Additionally, Dr. Schall has consulted nationally and internationally on issues related to adolescents and young adults with ASD. Dr. Schall’s keynote presentation is titled Pathways to Employment for Individuals with ASD. In this keynote session. Dr. Schall will present research on the impact of internships, supported employment and customized employment on employment outcomes. She will also include an in-depth discussion of the behavioral methods used to support youth and young adults with ASD in the transition from school to work. We are confident you will find this session interesting and informative! Dr. Schall will also present during the first breakout session from 11:00 to 12:00: Achieving Competi-tive Integrated Employment for Youth and Young Adults with ASD: Why, How, Who, What, Where, When. Please see the session abstract on page 11 for additional information. Each year we welcome 300—400 parents, educators, healthcare workers and community members interested in serving individuals with autism spectrum disorder to the Promising Pathways conference. Achieving Competitive Integrated Employment for Youth and Young Adults with ASD: Why, How, Who, What,
Where, When

The promise of full participation in the workforce has yet to be realized by the majority of young adults with ASD. Never-
theless, there have been studies that describe successful strategies that result in employment supports for individuals with
ASD in employment. Those strategies include environmental design, systematic instruction, the use of applied behavior
analysis, and positive behavior supports. In this session, Dr. Schall will present the 'nuts and bolts" regarding the implemen-
tation of supported and customized employment and internships while in high school through the use of these supports.
Classroom Strategies for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder

This presentation is for educational staff. The participants should have some general knowledge about ASD, so the present-
er can provide more information explaining how executive functioning in a student with ASD affects classroom perfor-
mance. The presenter will provide strategies addressing attention, organization, written and expressive language, and infor-
mation processing.
Connecting the Uninsured to Health Coverage
Mrs. Jodi A. Ray, MA Health Care Coverage and Access
This will provide an overview of what best practice tools and approaches FL-CKF uses to implement effective statewide
outreach and enrollment efforts to some of the State’s most vulnerable populations. This will include a discussion of what
populations are being reached and how the expanded role of the assisters include health literacy as an essential component
of connecting consumers to coverage is key to access to care.
Coping with Major Changes
Bradford Karpel and family, facilitated by Dr Britt Stroud Adult Living
The presenter will be speaking about the major changes that happened in his life this past year and how he coped with
them. This change includes loss of job, job hunting, rejection and becoming accumulated to a new work environment.
There will also be a panel at the end with his mom, dad and twin brother that the audience may ask questions. The moder-
ator will be presented with 10 questions to ask each family member to get the ball rolling.
Empowering Parents and Families: Self Care & Modeling Healthy Coping
Courtney A. Faunce Parent Involvement
Studies reflect that parents and care providers who engage in consistent and meaningful self-care practices experience
increased psychological well-being and decreased feelings of burnout. This presentation will offer evidence-based strate-
gies for parents and care providers to implement starting today. Topics include: the Wellness Wheel, internal vs. external
coping, mindfulness, CBT strategies, and more.

Kimberly Walker Positive Behavior Support
Participants will learn essential building blocks to manage behavior. Based on applied behavior analysis, this training will
review what behavior is, the importance of antecedents and consequences, and using this information with your children.
Behavior management tools to manage behaviors will be reviewed followed by an Q&A portion for participants
Guardianship and its Alternatives

This program will discuss decision making authority. Also, this program will explore guardianships, as well as alternatives
to full guardianships, such as limited guardianships, guardian advocates, supported decision making, natural guardianships,
powers of attorney, health care surrogates, voluntary guardianships, representative payees, and designated representatives.
Finally, this program and will explain the consequences of each.

How to Save With ABLE United
Cathryn C..Girard Financial Resources
The Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) Act allows individuals with disabilities to save money tax-free for a wide
variety of future expenses (including transportation, housing, and education) while maintaining benefits, such as SSI and
Medicaid. ABLE United, Florida’s qualified ABLE program, provides opportunities and can change the way you plan for
short-term expenditures and establish long-term savings. In this session, we will discuss everything you need to know about
the ABLE Act and how you can start achieving a better life experience through ABLE United.
Improving Medical Care for Adults with Disabilities: Training and Resources
Ms Cydnee Parsely, MPH Classroom Strategies
Adults with disabilities face obstacles in communicating with providers, and receiving appropriate medical care. More than
80% of US Medical School students report receiving no clinical training regarding people with disabilities. Training in com-
munication and available resources through Special Olympics can improve medical care for adults with IDD.
Influencing Challenging Behaviors with Meditative MovementsTM
Mrs. Ellie Peterson Positive Behavior Support
Learn how Meditative MovementsTM can be used by parents, caregivers, educators, and healthcare providers to increase
physical activity and improve mood. The 2017 University of Minnesota research study found this technique reduces anxiety,
depression and fatigue while improving emotional and functional well-being. You can influence behaviors by performing
Meditative MovementsTM.
Legal and Financial Issues for Special Needs Children—Maximize the Income
Dr. Jess W. Levins Legal, Benefits, Financial
Session updated to include 2019 issues and will cover: the need for a 100 year plan; Legal Documents including Pre-Need
Guardianship, Guardianship, Guardian Advocate, and Special Needs Trusts; Qualifying for both Medicaid and Medicaid; the
easy way to meet the annual reporting requirements for SSI and Guardianship; and maximizing your child’s life time income.
Nutritional Considerations in Autism and ADHD

Review the medical literature on the role of nutritional concepts of different diets, the role of micronutrients and phytonutri-
ents, as well as gut health in the role of Autism and ADHD.
The Experience of Being Diagnosed with ASD in Adulthood

This presentation will be a combination of Research and Anecdotal commentary on why High Functioning Autism is likely
underdiagnosed in females on the Spectrum, exploring mental health consequences, masking, language preference and how
to provide support to Autistics from the Neurotypical community. Most importantly, living authentically with late ASD diag-
nosis.
How to Become a Successful Autism Self Advocate
Mike DiMauro Adult Living
Mike DiMauro is a Volunteer Advocacy Ambassador for Autism Speaks. Mike wants to share his experiences of being a self
advocate and sharing your story to people that make a difference in the world. Self advocacy allows the person with autism to
use their voice in the world and help make the world a better place and to help other people with autism as well!
