SPECIAL PERMISSION APPLICATIONS

LLM and GradDipLaw students may undertake any postgraduate units offered by Sydney Law School unless specified otherwise. Students enrolled in specialist award courses should refer to the list of prescribed units of study and eligibility requirements published in the University of Sydney Law School Handbook http://sydney.edu.au/handbooks/law/. Students wishing to enrol in a unit of study offered within another Sydney Law School award course, please submit a special permission application in Sydney Student https://sydney.edu.au/students/request-permission-unit-of-study/special-permission.html. The application must be accompanied by supporting reasons and documents (where relevant).

OFFSHORE UNITS OF STUDY

Each year Sydney Law School offers a number of postgraduate units of study in Asia and Europe. For details, please refer to https://canvas.sydney.edu.au/courses/4533/pages/experiential-learning-offshore-study. Students cannot enrol directly into the offshore units. Pre-enrolment registration must be accepted by the Law School prior to completing formal enrolment requirements. Students must ensure they hold an

appropriate visa and/or sponsor’s approval prior to accepting their offer. It is the responsibility of students to ensure their travel plans will not interfere with their studies. Planned commitments and timetable clashes do not fall within the eligibility guidelines for which the University would grant special consideration or special arrangement.

CLASS SIZE-RESTRICTED AND CAPPED UNITS

In the case where class size is restricted or enrolments in a particular unit are capped, priority will be given to students enrolled in postgraduate award courses at Sydney Law School. Cross-institutional and non-degree students will be placed on a waiting list and permitted to enrol should a place become available. It is strongly recommended that students finalise their enrolment in units of study as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

TAXATION LAW UNITS

It is assumed that students undertaking specified tax units have an understanding of Australian income taxation law commensurate with that which would be obtained from completing undergraduate study in Australian taxation law or five years working with Australian taxation law in a law or accounting practice, in an industry role or in the Australian Taxation Office. For students who do not have such knowledge or work experience, they first should undertake LAWS6825 Introduction to Australian Business Taxation before enrolling in other units.

MASTER OF JURISPRUDENCE

NON-SYDNEY LAW SCHOOL LECTURE TIMETABLES

In order to access online reading materials, it is essential that students are officially enrolled in the unit and have a current student card https://sydney.edu.au/students/student-cards.html. Students will be notified of the availability of reading materials via the unit LMS site http://elearning.sydney.edu.au and their University email address. LMS sites are generally accessible on the first day of classes for semester-length units. Students enrolled in intensive units will be notified of the availability of the LMS site via their University email address approximately 3 weeks prior to the first class.
