SATURDAY MAY 4, 2019

3:15 pm SESSION E : Tales from the Front Lines: three case studies of opioid use disorder from the perspective of a Pharmacy Technician Karyann Dorn

This presentation will be exploring the Pharmacy Technician’s scope of practice when working with Opioid Use Disorder (OUD). Not all patients with OUD are the same and working with chronic pain management can be ethically challenging. Working in the current environment of opioid use in Canada every practitioner should be included in a role towards harm reduction.

This session will include three unique tales; chronic pain management for a palliative cancer patient who is homeless; individual suffering from a spinal injury who was struggling with treatment because of a prison record; and a human trafficking victim who continues to struggle with opioid addiction. As a Pharmacy Technician, the Best Practice Medical History should be re-defined to include compassion and empathy.
