“Another world is not only possible, she is on her way. On a quiet day, I can hear her breathing.” – Arundhati Roy

Since 1963, the California Conference for Equality and Justice has been opening eyes, hearts and minds in Southern California. We believe that every person deserves to be seen, heard and understood. We believe that individual and group transformation is always possible. We invite you to join us in co-creating a more inclusive, just and equitable world for all. We are proud to share our 2019 accomplishments, and we thank you for supporting our work to transform individuals and communities, overcome conflict, and build real unity in Southern California.

Program Highlights 2019Building Bridges for Youth

Iluminar: Training and Coaching for JusticeCCEJ’s training and coaching services continue to be in high demand throughout Southern California. In response to

growing needs in schools, workplaces and communities for more effective and humane ways to approach and work

through conflict, we’ve formed a team to provide schools, workplaces, and communities with skills and tools to build

cultures where no one is disposable and conflict is healed in equitable ways. The team chose the name “Iluminar,”

the Spanish word for illuminate to reflect our hopes that CCEJ’s support will help adults develop relationships based

on respect, understanding, appreciation, and accountability. The multilingual name

also reflects the depth of experience on our staff team and the communities which we

serve. In addition to training workshops, coaching, and capacity building, the Iluminar

team is developing innovative tools to spread knowledge about Restorative Justice

practices, such as our new podcast, Restorative beliefs posters, and online webinars.

2019 marks the 5th anniversary of CCEJ’s Summer Youth Leadership Institute (SLYI), which has trained more than 250 youth to date. Adonis,

a Wilson High graduate and now a 2nd year at Stanford University, was part of the inaugural SYLI class: “SYLI was the first time that I was fully

entrusted to collaborate with, connect with and motivate my peers to have difficult but necessary conversations about social changes and

equity for all. I had previously held leadership roles in school clubs, but this was the first time that I was able to use leadership to really effect

change. SYLI proved that there is true power in working together with other people rather than working alone. SYLI gave me a foundational

leadership training that I have been able to employ in my current mentorship, employment and academic pursuits. Thanks to CCEJ, I’m

prepared to bring positive change to the places I will go.”

Community Events

FY19 Budget: $2.49 Million

Healing HarmsCCEJ’s Healing Harms team responds to conflict in the community and offers alternatives to incarceration through our Restorative Justice

youth diversion program. In 2019, CCEJ kept 100 youth out of the criminal justice system. CCEJ received a case of a young man who bur-

glarized the home of the youth leader of his church group. Both the man and his mother decided to use CCEJ’s Restorative Justice services

to reflect on why he felt the need to enter the home and to make amends to his youth leader. After meeting with their case manager, mom

and son were able to speak about their past and talk about the young man’s mental health struggles and his connection to his youth group.

CCEJ was able to invite his youth leader to join the case as the person who was harmed, so that the young man could make amends and

demonstrate his accountability. The youth leader was very happy with the opportunity given to the young man and thanked CCEJ for “the

hard work you all do.”

Our 45th Annual Food & Beverage Industries Humanitarian Award honorees: Kevin Arceneaux (Mondelēz), Bryan Kaltenbach (Food4Less/FoodsCo) and Michael Ajemian (Barilla)

Emily Grijalva, Latino Muslim Unity, Marisol Barajas and Hieu Nguyen were awarded Gene Lentzner Human Relations Awards in November 2018.

More than 850 people heard peace activist Christian Picciolini speak out against hatred and white supremacist groups at our 28th Annual Interfaith Intercultural Breakfast.

Our 2019 Humanitarian Awardees: Kevin & Jennifer Peterson, Dr. Phyllis Hayes-Reams, and President Jane Close Conoley with our Building Bridges Honorees Hank & Joyce Feldman of Performance Plus Tire.
