1 Introduction Saint Joseph High School provides electronic information and communication resources to our students. For the remainder of this document, electronic information and communication resources will be referred to as Technology

Resources or STREAM.

Dr. Mendoza, the SJHS Principal, and her administration guides and oversees the implementation and usage of these resources. The SJHS Technology Team manages these resources and collaborates with teachers to integrate them into their instructional practices.

1.1 Technology Vision The SJHS Technology Team, composed of the Director of Technology, Technology Associates, and Educational Technology Specialists, have a Strategic Technology Plan. The goals of the plan are the following:

Provide high-performing, reliable, flexible IT infrastructure that flawlessly supports students, parents/ guardians, teachers, administration, and staff,

Modernize SJHS academic and plant operations by deploying and integrating information systems, which increase efficiency, improve data integrity, and support a sustainable environment (less paper please), and

Transform Saint Joseph High School into a digital learning environment by providing:

• One-to-One device program for the students which supports the teachers’ curriculum and instructional practices,

• Smart Classroom equipped with leading edge technology to facilitate, enhance and accelerate student learning,

• Consistent Educational Technology and tools, when possible (e.g., Learning Management System - LMS) which eases transition between classes and school years,

• Educational Technology integrated into teachers’ instructional practices, achieving maximum SAMR benefit. SAMR is a model designed to help educators infuse technology into teaching and learning.

Figure 1.1-1 SAMR Model (reference Kathy Schrock’s Guide to Everything)

• Progress towards a paperless school environment; for example: o 100% iBook textbook option for the iPad o Digital forms o On-line application o On-line registration o On-line service hour tracking

1.2 Technology at SJHS

1.2.1 SJ Technology: Current State (**) The entire community (students, teachers, staff, administration) has access to the SJ wireless network. The technology team consistently monitors the WiFi to assure that the coverage is adequate.

Safety for our students and community is the top priority. A “Firewall” and internet content filtering has been implemented. We monitor hacking and virus incidents and “patch” the servers and filtering when a new threat is identified by Cyber Security Authorities.

Saint Joseph High School is a Google Apps For Education (GAFE) school. We have made the commitment to use the Google eMail service (Gmail) and move to a common Learning Management System (LMS), Google Classroom. Students and teachers have the entire Google Education tool suite (Google Drive, Forms, etc.) available to them through their SJHS eMail account.

SJ implemented the SmartClassroom to enable 21st Century Learning for the 21st Century Jester. Each classroom is equipped with the following:

• iMac computer

• Interactive 3LCD Ultra Short Throw Projector is a state-of-the art device that creates non-blinding projections. (Even when you stand directly in front of the screen, light rarely reaches your face.)

• Dual pens and easy Interactive Tool software allows a presenter (teacher or student) to electronically annotate her document using the pen to highlight and draw on the projection screen

• Blu-Ray Player to show high definition movies, documentaries, etc.

• RF Modulator

• Document Camera (one per department) allows the teacher (or student) to easily display textbooks and 3D objects to promote engaging interactive lessons

SJHS implemented a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program that allows students to register their personal devices on the network and use them during school hours. In 2016, SJHS limited the devices that can be registered on the network to the following: Apple MacBook and Apple iPad. Some classes were “grandfathered” and allowed to bring non-Apple

devices. The Class of 2019 is the last class that may register non-Apple devices on the network.

In 2016, we submitted a grant proposal and were awarded the C3:Ignite grant to provide iPads to the Class of 2020 and

teachers, purchase software, and professional development. Additional iPads were provided for the Class of 2021.

1.3.2 2017-2018/2018-2019 Improvements (**) For the last two years, SJHS has undergone a technology infrastructure refresh including the following:

• July 2017: Round 2 of C3:Ignite iPads receive for the Class of 2021

• November 2017: SJHS changed Internet Service Providers (ISP), increased the internet speed, and laid the foundation for further infrastructure improvements.

• Fall 2017: Two large monitors installed on campus used to display marketing and informational slides

• March–December 2017: New servers and data backup service implemented.

• December 2017-July 2018: The campus was “rewired” to replace all the fiber and copper cables and comply with the LA Archdiocese infrastructure standards. New switches installed to better service all areas of the

campus.

• July 2018: Purchase iPads for the Class of 2022

• Summer 2018: Upgrade Audio/Visual systems in Chapel Court and Flynn Center

• August 2018: New printers installed on campus and implementation of a “Do it yourself” model for teachers, staff, and students.

• August 2018: New state-of-the-art Meraki Wireless Access Point installed throughout the campus; an access point in every classroom

• September 2018: Classroom and Office iMac computers replaced, increasing performance and quality

• January 2019: Grand Opening of the Jester Learning Center (JLC) which includes a state-of-the-art video conferencing system, upgraded projector system and Audio/Visual system

2 Purpose As our technology footprint expands, it is important that we upgrade our policies to clearly articulate the Acceptable Use Policy (AUP), iPad policy, Loan Policy, and BYOD Policy.

Saint Joseph High School is a Los Angeles Archdiocesan high school and complies with the Los Angeles Archdiocesan Administrative Handbook. Section 10.3 of the archdiocesan handbook is the Archdiocesan Acceptable Use and

Responsibility Policy For Electronic Communication (Archdiocesan AUP).

The Archdiocesan AUP provides the following:

• Guidelines to our technology department about how to implement, monitor, and manage our technology

resources and

• Policies and procedures that apply to all users of SJHS technology, including students, parents, teachers, staff, and administrators

The SJHS Academic Technology Policy is targeted for the students, their parents/guardians, and other users and complies and aligns with the Archdiocesan AUP. Students, their parents/guardians, and all users must review, understand, acknowledge, and comply with the SJHS technology policy.

3 SJHS Technology and Electronic Communication AUP All SJHS technology resources and all work performed on them, are the property of SJHS. These systems, devices, and

materials are to be used for SJHS educational, co-curricular, and operational purposes, not personal business.

With the permission of an SJHS administrator, a student or other user may use the SJ technology resources outside

regular school and business hours. (e.g., a staff member who is going to school.).

SJHS technology resources are not private and security cannot be guaranteed. User IDs and passwords are intended to enhance system security, not to provide users with personal privacy. The SJHS technology team maintains and monitors

the user directory and does not provide information to unauthorized people.

Saint Joseph High School administration reserves the right to change rules, add rules, interpret rules, or alter consequences in order to ensure a safe environment for all students.

3.1 Student Privileges The use of the Saint Joseph High School electronic information technology resources is a privilege, not a right.

Inappropriate use of these resources will result in disciplinary action and/or referral to legal authorities.

A student may access SJHS technology resources through her personal device, Jester iPad, or by using the SJHS computers and workstations located on campus.

NOTE: A smart phone may not be registered on the SJHS WiFi and it is not a permitted device during school hours. Smart phones and mobile phones may only be used on campus during school hours if approved by a teacher or

administrator for educational purposes. Faculty and Staff should only use this device for work calls and emergencies. M)

NOTE: A student is not allowed to use her mobile phone / Smart phone as a Hot Spot on campus. (M) **

3.2 Parent/Guardian Responsibility Parents/guardians are the primary caregivers for their daughters and are ultimately responsible for their technological communication and usage.

Saint Joseph High School is not responsible for a student’s inappropriate use of school technology, a student device, or a school-issued iPad.

3.3 Disciplinary Policy for AUP Violations The primary goal of the technology disciplinary policy it to keep the students safe in the rapidly changing digital world. The policy is very strict and escalates fast because when an AUP violation could not only place the offending student in

danger, but it could endanger the entire SJHS community.

The SJHS disciplinary policy is in the SJHS Parent-Student Handbook and is overseen by the Dean / Assistant Principal for Student Life. Each student and her parents/guardians should be familiar with the policy and escalation process:

• Three levels of SJHS disciplinary notices: 1. Infraction, 2. Misconduct, and 3. Disciplinary referral.

• Three levels of SJHS Disciplinary Probation: 1. Probation I 2. Probation II 3. Probation III

Any Student who does not comply with the AUP will be held accountable with appropriate consequences enforced. Due to the risk to the safety of our students, most of the AUP violations are defined as misconducts, which are “more serious offenses.” Throughout this document:

• AUP violations which are infractions are marked with (I)

• AUP violations that are misconducts are marked with (M)

Discipline for the AUP violation will be escalated following the disciplinary policy. Violations of federal and state regulations such as sending threatening email and accessing or distributing obscene material will be reported and dealt with by the governing law enforcement agency.

3.4 Network and Internet Security Saint Joseph High School has implemented a “Firewall” which blocks some internet usage and filters internet content. The Firewall executes the following:

• Prohibits student use of social networking sites

• Blocks inappropriate websites

• Stops the download of inappropriate content

• Monitors outgoing information to assure it is appropriate

• Stops unapproved users from accessing our intranet, internal systems, and databases.

SJHS has also implemented an Access Control System (ACS) and process for granting access to our systems and assigning logon IDs and Passwords. SJHS assures that only authorized users access to and/or change SJHS systems and data.

SJHS monitors the use of the technology resources and the Internet, and does not allow the download of inappropriate or dangerous content. We can identify the device and device owner when she attempts to access an inappropriate

website. When a student repeatedly attempts to access inappropriate websites, she will be issued a misconduct. (M)

If a student or other user believes that she needs access to a blocked website for educational purposes, she should

notify her teacher and submit a TNT change request ticket.

Page 12: 2019-2020 SCHOOL YEAR REGISTRATION · academic technology policy, 4th edition for the 2019-2020 school year registration (2.17.19) acceptable use policy (aup) ipad program policy

12

SJHS assures that outgoing information is appropriate and if inappropriate activity is detected, the student/user is

notified and asked to retrieve the information and change their behavior. (M)

3.5 Saint Joseph High School eMail (@sj-jester.org) SJHS has implemented a successful, managed eMail program using Gmail. Each student is assigned a Saint Joseph High School email address and password; the password is changed yearly by the technology team.

• Do not change the password. If you change it, it will be set back to the one assigned by the Technology

Department. (I) • Do not share your password with anyone. (M)

The SJHS email should only be used for school related purposes. (I)

Our goal is to make the SJHS eMail address the “single sign-on” (SSO) for SJHS academic and co-curricular systems/tools. The SJHS eMail address is the logon ID for the following tools:

• Google Education tools (Google Classroom, Google Drive, etc.)

• Co-Curricular tool

• Naviance tool used by the counseling department

• PlusPortal account (Student should set her PlusPortal password to match her eMail password)

• X2Vol used to track Christian Service Hours

Some of the academic tools still require an additional logon ID and Password. The same guidelines for usage and

password sharing apply.

All eMail messages and SJHS-related postings to any Internet site on or off campus at any time (notes, email, newsgroups, bulletin boards, wikis, or other interactive forms of communication) shall be educationally purposeful and appropriate. The following are prohibited:

• Hate mail, (M) • Harassment, (M)

• Discriminatory remarks, (M) • Vulgarity and swearwords, (M) • Other antisocial behaviors, (M) • Chain letters, and (M) • Threats of any kind. (M)

3.6 Security Expectations Saint Joseph High School students (and all users) are expected to abide by the following guidelines and rules:

• Do not share password(s) with anyone. (M)

• Do not use another student’s logon ID and password to log onto SJHS systems. (M)

• If you forget your password, open a TNT Problem Ticket. (Section 3.12)

• If you suspect that someone knows your password, and your password needs to be changed, open a TNT Problem Ticket. (Section 3.12)

• Use SJHS technology resources, including the Internet, under the guidelines specified by this document, by the Archdiocesan AUP, and by SJHS teachers, administration and staff members. (M)

• Do not provide / post your personal information, or personal information about any SJHS student, teacher,

staff, or administrator. (M)

• Respect copyright laws and licensing agreements pertaining to materials used and obtained via the Internet or other electronic sources. (M)

• Do not bypass or attempt to bypass (hack) network security to access inappropriate material. (M)

Page 13: 2019-2020 SCHOOL YEAR REGISTRATION · academic technology policy, 4th edition for the 2019-2020 school year registration (2.17.19) acceptable use policy (aup) ipad program policy

13

• Do not bypass or attempt to bypass (hack) network security to impair the functionality of any computer or network. (M)

• Do not assist others in violating these rules by sharing information or passwords. (M)

• Notify a teacher or a staff member whenever she comes across information or messages that are inappropriate, dangerous, threatening, or make her feel uncomfortable. When a student identifies, or knows about a security

problem, she should talk to a teacher without discussing it with other students.

3.7 Personal Devices Personal devices include

• Laptop

• Tablet

• “Reader”

• Video cameras

• Cameras

• Mobile phones and Smart Phones***

All devices, whether they need access to the SJHS network or not, must be registered with the Technology Department in order to be used during the school day. (M)

***Mobile/Smart phones will not be registered or have access to the SJHS WiFi.

o MUST be turned off during classes and must not be used without permission from a teacher or other SJHS official (M)

o Cannot be used as Hot Spots for other Mobile devices. This is very dangerous because SJHS cannot monitor traffic and content filtering is rendered useless. (M)

3.8 Photo, Video, and Audio recording A student device may be equipped with a camera and microphone, allowing video, image, and audio capture. At no

time should a student record a student, teacher, parent, presenter, etc. without permission from the parties involved and a teacher or other SJHS official. (M)

In addition, permission must be obtained from the parties involved before publishing content. (M)

Each student must exercise good judgment when using her device camera and microphone, including respecting

copyright laws. (M)

3.9 SJHS Internet Safety Rules SJHS enforces the Archdiocesan AUP Internet Safety Policy. Some of these guidelines are further clarified below:

• Faculty or administrator permission is required to stream music from the internet. (M)

• Faculty or administrator permission is required to stream videos from the Internet/YouTube app. (M)

• Faculty or administrator permission is required to access to any of the following: o Social networking sites, including Facebook, Twitter, SnapChat and others, (M) o Instant Messaging, (M) o Outside email accounts, and (M) o Educational games. (M)

• Students are not allowed to o Play games on their devices or on the internet, (M) o Text, and (M) o Access inappropriate websites via their phone cellular connection. (M)

• Additional restrictions include: access to information related to gambling, illegal drugs, alcohol use, online merchandising, hate speeches, criminal skills, alternative journals, fan fiction, and chat rooms. (M)

14

• Use of the Internet and/or other resources for personal gain, profit, commercial advertising, or political lobbying is prohibited. (M)

• Use of SJHS technology resources to purposefully attempt to access pornographic material, inappropriate text files, information advocating violence, or files harmful to the integrity of Saint Joseph High School is prohibited. (M)

• A student shall not give her name, address, phone number, school name, or any personal information to anyone or any site on the Internet unless she is under the supervision of a teacher, administrator, or technology staff member. (M)

• A User shall not provide personal information, including job duties, or student personal information (class lists) outside the SJHS premises or network without explicit permission from the Principal. (M)

• A User shall not host 3rd party websites. (M)

• A User shall not create damaging software and / or install damaging software on SJ technology resources; do not install unapproved software on SJ technology resources. (M)

• DO NOT CREATE INAPPROPRIATE CONTENT USING SJHS TECHNOLOGY RESOURCES; DO NOT POST CONTENT ON LINE:

o Do not create emails or other artifacts that have inappropriate references, images, videos, etc. about SJHS (institution, students, faculty, staff, administrators, other community members) (M)

o Even if you don’t post it, it may not be secure o Do not post inappropriate content on any public Internet site, chat room, or other public electronic

media. (M) o Do not post images of teachers, staff, or other personnel on the Internet without receiving written

permission from SJHS and the individual(s) involved. (M) o Do not use recording devices to slander, bully or denigrate any student, visitor, staff member, faculty

member, and/or administrator, on or off the campus, at any time. (M)

• REMEMBER, ONCE YOU CREATE A DIGITAL ARTIFACT OR FILE, YOU CAN DELETE IT BUT YOU CAN NEVER BE GUARANTEED THAT IT IS GONE.

3.10 Vandalism/Damage Vandalism is defined as any malicious attempt to harm or destroy any part of Saint Joseph’s resources, which include technological devices and equipment. This includes, but is not limited to, uploading, creating, or transmitting computer viruses; “hacking” into any part of the Saint Joseph High School system, and physical damage to the SJHS

hardware. (M)

3.11 Cyberbullying Bullying is the habitual harassing, intimidating, tormenting, browbeating, humiliating, terrorizing, oppressing and/or threatening of another person. Cyberbullying occurs when the Internet, mobile phones, or other cyber technology are used to bully a student. (M) Cyberbullying includes, but is not limited to:

• Sending inappropriate text, e-mail, or instant messages. (M)

• Posting inappropriate pictures or messages about others in blogs or on websites. (M)

• Using someone else’s user name to spread rumors or lies about someone. (M)
