OF CATAMOUNT CLUB50 YEARSIt was early in the 1968-69 athletic season that Jim Gudger ’48, WCU’s basketball coach and interim athletic director, and Clint Dodson, head of WCU’s science department, first pulled together a fundraising organization to support student-athletes. It was called the Big Cat Club, and it would evolve into today’s Catamount Club.

Fifty years later, the Catamount Club has grown to become the heartbeat of WCU Athletics, funding approximately 50 percent of the department’s student-athlete scholarships with $1.57 million in scholarship gifts last fiscal year.

Without your annual support, Athletics at WCU would simply not survive, and nearly half of our 154 student-athlete scholarship equivalencies would disappear. This year, we are relying on all of Catamount Nation to help us surpass our goal of $1,620,000 in private

scholarship support by May 31, 2019 to offset nearly $3,000,000 in scholarship costs so we can fulfill our mission of being the best place for the student-athlete experience in the Southern Conference. By achieving and exceeding this goal, we are projected to add an additional 6-8 scholarship equivalencies as we work towards maximizing our scholarship offerings. With your gifts, you become champions for our student-athletes. You support their success on the field and off, and you change their lives forever.

Join us as we begin the next 50 years of supporting student-athletes and their educational and athletic endeavors.

Read more about our 50-year history and watch a video featuring a few of our founders and early members at go.wcu.edu/50years.

Just five years ago, I was a high schooler in Garysburg, North Carolina, eager to start my first year playing football for the Catamounts and totally unsure of my future. Today, I am wearing a Super Bowl championship ring and training with some of the best players in football history. It’s been an incredible journey, and you have been a big part of it.

While Coach Speir recruited me, it was you who brought me to Cullowhee. Through scholarship support of the Catamount Club, you made it possible for a young man like me to attend college, the first in my family. It was the opportunity of a lifetime – one that would lead me to a college degree, a chance at a professional football career, and an unbelievable 2019 Super Bowl win. To say you changed my life would be an understatement. You changed my world.

While there is no question that my story is not typical, I’m writing today to remind you that I am one of thousands of stories of how your support of student-athletes opens unexpected doors and helps young men and women chase their biggest dreams and reach their greatest potential. Some will go on to successful careers outside the world of sports and a few will get the opportunity to play professionally. But, all will earn experience as teammates and leaders, overcome defeat and gain confidence in success. All will be changed forever by this incredible experience of being a Catamount student-athlete.

As we look ahead to 50 more years of the Catamount Club, I want to thank you for everything you have done and everything you will do to support student-athletes like me. Your generosity and commitment is deeply valued and will never be forgotten. I challenge you to continue to help young student-athletes by giving them the opportunity to further their life and education and overcome adversity. Never stop doing what you are doing!

Since my arrival in 2011, our out-of-state scholarship equivalencies have gone from 111 to 154 which is nearly a 40% increase. Between 2018 and 2019 alone, we have gone from 123 to 154 scholarship equivalencies, in large part due to NC Promise and the generosity of Catamount Club members. While NC Promise does significantly reduce the overall scholarship cost to Athletics, we still fall short in reaching the NCAA allowable maximum number of scholarships of 189, which most of our competitors in the Southern Conference have already reached. Our goal from the beginning has been to find a pathway to be in a budgetary position where we can offer the full NCAA maximum amount of scholarships for all sports, which would increase our scholarship expenditures to over $4,000,000.

Because of NC Promise and your generosity, we have not only been able to make scholarship enhancements, but also we have made significant strides with each sport involving recruiting budget increases and operating budget increases in 2018-19. Below you will see how far we have come as a department and how Catamount Club donors have made an impact in providing scholarships to WCU student-athletes.

Now, more than ever, your philanthropic dollar goes further in accomplishing our goal of maximizing scholarship support to deserving WCU student-athletes. In celebrating the Catamount Club’s golden anniversary, our student-athletes are counting on donors like you to step up and answer Tad Grattan’s 50th Giving Challenge by increasing your support (see next page).

As always, thank you for your investment and commitment to WCU Athletics. Our student-athletes and coaches are extremely grateful for your support and know your continued commitment is vital to our efforts in building a championship athletic program at Western Carolina University.

Go Cats!

Randy Eaton Director of Athletics
