CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION AT BAKER’S CHAPELOn November 11, 2018, Baker’s Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church celebrated 100 years of ministry in a special

centennial service at the church. Baker’s Chapel was established in 1918 and has seen many changes over the years, including three different places of worship and 33 pastors! Our current pastor, Dr. Jim Tunnell, is the 33rd pastor of Baker’s Chapel and has served in this role since 2003. The church has experienced tremendous growth in the past 15 years, adding a new Family Life Center to the campus in 2014. The building houses the youth center, community center, children’s center, commercial kitchen, gym, and substantial storage areas.

In describing the church’s mission today, Pastor Tunnell said, “As we celebrate our centennial year in ministry, let us call attention to the common cause that unites us here today. It is a family bond that has one goal—proclaiming the Good News!”

The celebration service opened with a special prayer and opening remarks by children’s pastor Aaron Tunnell, son of Pastor Jim Tunnell, followed by special music by the Baker’s Chapel praise choir. There were four former pastors in attendance: Rev. David Bain, Rev. James & Connie Black, Rev. D. F. Bennett Jr., and Rev. Walter & Ann Wood. Pastor Tunnell honored them with a gift and thanked them for their leadership and vision during their time at Baker’s Chapel.

Our general superintendent, Dr. A. D. Beacham Jr., shared a special video message with the

congregation: “Congratulations to Baker’s Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church! This is a wonderful time as you are celebrating 100 years of serving the gospel of Jesus Christ! You are part of a movement that is 120 years old this very year! I pray that the next one hundred years, if the Lord tarries, will be filled with great blessings!”

We had a very special singing group, The Gray Family, who brought down the house with their amazing vocals during a three-song performance! A special centennial video was shown that honored all 33 pastors that have been a part of Baker’s Chapel. It was a moving memory of all the people who have made the church what it is today. The Lord has blessed Baker’s Chapel with inspired leaders, who had a passion for spreading the word of God. We are thankful and blessed that they paved the way to the church we are today.

We were also honored to receive a special proclamation by the Wythe County Board of Supervisors for 100 years of service to the community! The Honorable Coy McRoberts, supervisor for the Piney District, presented a framed proclamation to our church on behalf of the County of Wythe. He also included his own remarks regarding his personal ties to Baker’s Chapel and memories of the church. Pastor Tunnell also made his own closing remarks before the Baker’s Chapel praise choir performed. We dismissed in prayer and enjoyed a wonderful meal in the Family Life Center, sponsored by our Women’s Ministries Department. It was a wonderful day of celebration and fellowship as we honored the past and looked toward the future.

The church has been richly blessed over the past 100 years, and we are honored to be a part of an amazing family of believers. We have many important outreach ministries, but our main mission is to spread the Good News to everyone that comes through our doors and in the surrounding community! We thank everyone from past to present for making that mission possible! As Paul said, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!” (Romans 10:15, NIV).

2019 Conference Missions Project:

Cambodia Church Construction

The young pastor’s name is Chea Savuth. This IPHC church meets in a rented facility that is absolutely packed out. The new church property is a rice field, so it needs landfill in order to prepare it for construction. There is an immediate need of $2,000 for this preliminary work.

Please give to help the IPHC congregation in Pursat, Cambodia. You can help their dream of having their own church become a reality by giving to Project #76017P. A conference missions team will travel to this region in February 2020. The team will help to construct the church and provide medical clinics.

Missionary Russell Board describes the need in this country: “The 16 million people of Cambodia live in a nation scarred by the holocaust unleashed by Pol Pot in the late 1970s. Led by this cruel dictator, the Khmer Rouge slaughtered over a million Cambodians in the ‘Killing Fields’ and starved another million with their cruel and bizarre policies.

“The nation has yet to recover from the economic collapse brought about by the total destruction of its infrastructure in that era. Land mines buried back then continue to take a toll today, exploded by unsuspecting farmers and children who may lose their feet, legs or lives.

“In 1999, Rev. Samuel and Merlyn Lamanilao set out as pioneer IPHC missionaries to this war-ravaged nation. After eight years of successful pastoral ministry in the Philippines, the Lamanilaos answered the call of God to leave their home country and take a step of faith to this foreign land.

“With perseverance and prayer, the Lamanilaos took on the challenge of learning the language and adapting to the culture, and in December 2000, the first PH church was organized in Phnom Penh. From this base of operations, disciples trained by the Lamanilaos have since been sent out to plant and pastor churches in surrounding towns and villages.

“Through feeding programs and digging water wells, People to People has played a major role in Cambodian church planting efforts. Medical teams sent by TEAMS ministries have also helped greatly. Now there are currently six IPHC congregations in Cambodia, along with a School of Ministry to train pastors and leaders.

“From the beginning, Sammy and Merlyn have reached out to the suffering and hopeless, including AIDS patients, prisoners and prostitutes. They have witnessed many lives transformed and renewed through the power of Christ. Their dedication and faithfulness to the Lord have been replicated in the next generation of leaders coming after them.

“In December of 2016, Sammy went to be with the Lord at age 47, following a severe reaction to a thyroid medication. In spite of this devastating loss, Merlyn has chosen to remain in Cambodia and continue the mission. She has been affirmed as the IPHC national leader by the Cambodian churches, who recognize her calling and ability.

“Cambodia is a Buddhist nation and is classified as ‘unreached,’ with Christians numbering less than half of one-percent of the population. The government is democratic but authoritarian; the prime minister has been in office for 34 years and is willing to do whatever is necessary to retain power.”

Happy New Year 2019

“WHO ARE YOU, O GREAT MOUNTAIN?”(Zechariah 4:7, NKJV)

This was the question facing Zerubbabel during the visions of the candlestick and the olive trees. Obstacles stood in the way of Zerubbabel as he attempted to rebuild the Temple. Opposition and lack of resources were barriers to this holy work! The Amplified Version characterizes the mountain as a mountain of human obstacles. Zerubbabel was discouraged. His hands had laid the foundation. However, he was not sure if he could complete the assignment. But God’s response to his discouragement was: “‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ says the Lord of hosts” (Zechariah 4:6).

MOUNTAIN OF OBSTACLES – “Overcomers” is a term used often in the book of Revelation. A holy determination must exist for the man or woman of God to complete God’s assignments! The enemy is good at creating MOUNTAINS:

*Mountains of Lack *Mountains of Resistance *Mountains of Hindrance

Zerubabbel needed the Spirit of God to fulfill his destiny, and God liberally poured out His Spirit for the moment!

WHAT DO YOU SEE? The angel woke Zerubbabel from sleep. Encouragement for this man would begin with a vision of faith! He saw a lampstand, which had a bowl, pipes, olive trees, and two golden spouts. There were seven pipes leading from the bowl to each of the seven lamps. The message was that there was an ABUNDANT SUPPLY of oil necessary for the building of the temple

SHOUT, “GRACE! GRACE!” Grace would knock down the mountain! Grace would cause the mountain to become a plain before Zerubbabel (Zechariah 4:7)! The shouts of grace can be understood to be a prayer for God’s FAVOR.

Consider Noah. During a period of great wickedness upon the earth, he “found GRACE in the eyes of the Lord” (Genesis 6:8, emphasis added). This favor empowered him to build the ark, which saved him and his family during the judgment of the flood. GRACE helped Noah to build for God. And GRACE would help this king build the temple!

YOU WILL FINISH! There is a GREAT PROMISE found in Paul’s letter to the Philippians: “Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ” (1:6). If you are facing obstacles, it is time to SHOUT, “GRACE! GRACE!”

As we look forward to what this year might hold, let’s keep in mind the various missions, ministries, and organizations that we support with our prayers and finances.

The 46th Annual March for Life Rally in Washington, D.C., will be held on Friday, January 18. This is the world’s largest pro-life event. The IPHC has been involved in the event for a number of years.

The Appalachian Conference Men’s Ministries Department also provides financial support to Royal Home Ministries (a division of Falcon Children’s Home) through our Alternative to Abortion Ministries golf tournament held in the fall. The Royal Home Maternity Program offers care, training, and education to young pregnant mothers. No one is turned away due to lack of funds. The goal of the program is to save babies from abortion and redirect and enrich the life of the mother. There is access to excellent medical care, financial management training, as well as a continued focus on the education and/or vocational goals of the mother. The program provides access to appropriate resources for housing and support after the baby is born. Classes are offered on health, childbirth, and nutrition. The program also helps the mother develop a parenting plan or an adoption plan for the child.

The website is http://www.falconchildrenshome.com/royal-home-ministries/. You can find information on all of their programs, as well as contact for support, volunteer opportunities, and contact them about a mother in need of a maternity program.

I look forward to our opportunities to share and change lives this coming year. Please continue in prayer with me that 2019 will make us all better men and provide even more opportunities to share the gospel.
