FROM THE PEN OF THE PASTOR . . .
By Father Tom DiFolco
One of the many amazing characteristics of our parish is the won-derful care that so many of our parishioners offer for others, whether they are family members, neighbors in the community, or people who come to us in their need. The members of our Com-munity Outreach Commission are involved in numerous projects and activities that provide service. The members of our St. Vincent de Paul Conference receive requests for financial assistance and respond with great diligence and care. Our Health and Wellness Committee members help us care for ourselves with regular checks of our blood pressure and blood sugar levels. Numerous parish-ioners take Holy Communion to the homebound in our parish. Our parish school Mustang Serves organization involves young people and adults in the parish in a plethora of service projects. Throughout the year, participants in our Youth Ministry reach out in service in a variety of ways. This list could go on and on.

Let me take this opportunity to highlight one person who has ex-emplified how so many of our parishioners offer the Lord’s loving care to our sisters and brothers. Since the 1970’s, Lucy Tobin has been going to the Brookwood Retirement Community every other week, to help set up and prepare for the celebration of the Eucha-rist with residents there. She has gone to residents’ rooms to re-mind them of the time for Mass, helped to make sure residents get to the room where Mass is celebrated, prepared the room for Mass, helped lead the priest around to rooms for Communion and Anointing of the Sick after Mass, and more, all in the spirit of “whatever you did for one of these least brothers or sisters of mine, you did for me” — Matthew 25:40.
As happens so often here at St. Michael, Lucy has exercised her ministry without fanfare, publicity or accolades; she has been about the care, not the credit. As she retires from this ministry this summer, this little lady has left big shoes to fill. I am profoundly grateful to God for Lucy’s commitment of time and talent in ser-vice to the Kingdom of God. And I know that her story is just one of the many stories at St. Michael the Archangel Parish, stories of compassion, concern, cooperation and care, stories of how “we are called to teach and evangelize, to praise and worship God, through prayer and service, to our community and beyond” — from the Parish Mission Statement.

Fifteen families sang as part of the "Family Choir" at the 11:30 Mass on Sunday, July 20. Many had not sung in choir before! This was an opportunity to sing with other members of their family while also serving our parish family. They sounded great!

The theme of this year’s festival was “1-4 All and All 4 Fun!”, and the festival truly lived up to it’s theme. We had over 800 volunteers (“1-4 All”), good weather, excit ing games, great entertainment, and an enjoyable time with fel-low parishioners and festivalgoers (“All 4 Fun!”). Once again, our sponsors helped ensure our success. Many, many thanks to all those who volunteered, bought raffle tickets, and came to our weekend of fun. We are very excited and proud that, because of YOU, our festival net profit was over $116,000. Great job, St. Michael Parish!

PARISH YOUTH SHARE BLESSINGS ON M ISSION TRIP
By Lori Anne Fothergill, Youth Faith Formation Minister
In today’s world, you read/hear/see a lot about how teenagers and young adults are “not engaged” with each other…how they are al-ways “on their phones” and not interested in social interaction un-less it is through the newest, best social media craze. It seems like they aren’t “connecting” to the world and the people in it. While this may be true in extreme cases, I’d like to introduce you to twelve teens that couldn’t be more “connected” to each other, their world, and the faith they are being asked to share.
On June 22, Nicky, Ben, Eric, Michael, Robert, Sam, Casey, Mac-kenzie, Taylor, Lydia, Elise, and Lauren gave up an entire week of their summer vacation to drive to Blue Ridge, Georgia, to serve Jesus through the TEAMeffort Mission Camps. Fr. Fecko blessed them during the 8:00 Mass, and many of our parishioners saw them off — and their five adult helpers: John, Ed, Emily, Chris-tine, and me.
Since the trip down to Blue Ridge took over seven and a half hours, there was a lot of time to sing, play car games, and get to know one another better. The twelve teens represented seven dif-ferent high schools, and while they all knew each other through youth ministry, the intimacy that comes through shared hard work and experiences wasn’t there yet. That didn’t stop them from talk-ing and opening up to each other about their thoughts and con-cerns about the week, the fun that they wanted to have, and what they would be missing back home.
As each day progressed, the teens became more and more con-nected. We were working at the home of “Ms. Clare” and her hus-band, Frank. Frank is in a wheelchair from a stroke he experienced five years ago. He will be moved to a nursing home in the next few months because he needs more specialized care than Ms. Clare can handle. Obviously, it is a pretty rough time for them right now, so we all spent time talking with Ms. Clare and playing with her dog, Bella. Don’t get me wrong; a ton of time was spent on the spindling, painting, and staining of her front deck, landscap-ing, and tearing off the roof of her shed to replace it and shore it up; but with all 5 chaperones working in service positions, the fel-lowship and sharing of love is a big deal….something we didn’t have to teach to the awesome teens with us. They gave of their love freely, and watched it return to them abundantly.

PARISH YOUTH SHARE BLESSINGS ON M ISSION TRIP , CONTINUED
Ms. Clare made us lunch one day, brought us donuts fresh from a local bakery, and also surprised us with watermelon. Each time we did something wonderful and unexpected, she would say, “Well, I guess the saying is true: You can’t out-bless God”. She was a true testament to her love for Christ, and the teens took her story to heart.
We ended each night with chapel — it was a lot of upbeat games, worship music, and testimony with all of the other groups, and then we had small-group time, where we could take our experienc-es and relate them to our Catholic Faith. We talked about our “Hey Gods”, “Yeah Gods”, and “Mad Props”, and then spent time in prayer with our “prayer partners”. One of the best moments of the week was when I had the opportunity to bless each teen (out loud) in our closing prayer circle. It was so easy to share the gifts I saw in each of them and to affirm that they used — and continue to use — their gifts to bring Christ to our world.
The world may be hard on our teens, but I know that at St. Mi-chael Parish, we are truly blessed by each of them. They continue to impact God’s kingdom here at home, and they are a light for our broken world. I am so proud of each of them and pray that our Good God continues to bless them abundantly.

By Brian Bisig, Director of Music and Worship
Our parish choir trip (April 25-May 4) to Scotland and England began with a little surprise at the airport. I had found out the day before we left that we were expected to chant the “Credo” (the Creed) and the “Pater Noster” (the Our Fa-ther) in Latin at the Mass the day after we arrived – yikes! So other travelers in the terminal at the Cincinnati airport were treated to our choir chanting in Latin as we tried to quickly learn the music!
We did learn the chants and sang them beautifully along with our other music at Mass at St. Mary’s Metropolitan Cathedral in Edinburgh, Scotland. It was the Second Sunday of Easter and the canonization day for St. John Paul II and St. John XXIII. The pastor of the cathedral, who happened to have served on com-mittees with our former Archbishop Pilarczyk, told us that the chalice he used during Mass was given to the cathedral by St. John Paul on his visit there in 1982.
With that wee bit of excitement out of the way, we were able to enjoy the rest of Edinburgh, with its medieval streets and tower-ing castle upon a hill. Our group traveled well together, led by our tour manager, Tim. We traveled south from Edinburgh toward Yorkshire, England, stopping along the way to see some Roman ruins of Hadrian’s Wall (the northernmost reach of the Roman Empire) and an amazing medieval ruin called Fountains Abbey in a picturesque, secluded park-like location.
Our second performance was in the charming walled-city of York, where we first visited the impressive York Minster Church before our lunchtime concert at the more intimate St. Helen Stonegate Church in the historic city center. Be-fore the concert began, we sang a couple songs outside to draw people in to the concert. We gave an outstanding performance followed by a small reception during which we visited with the audience. Many in the audience were them-selves visiting from other countries and many were also singers who enjoyed lis-tening to a choir from the United States.
From there, we traveled to Stratford-upon-Avon to see the house where William Shakespeare was born and the church in which he was baptized and is buried. We had beautiful weather to stroll the quaint streets of the town and get a feel for English culture. Our next stop was in the university town of Oxford and a visit to Christchurch College and Christchurch Cathedral. Among the rich histo-ry and beauty of these buildings, many in our group also were delighted to see areas of the college that inspired or were used in the filming of the Harry Potter movies!

CHOIR TAKES MUSICAL TALENTS TO GREAT BRITAIN

Finally, our journey landed us in London for several days of sightseeing and our final performance. On our first night in London, we saw the musical “Billy Elliot” in London’s West End theater district (similar to Broadway theaters in New York). The next day we toured around London to see Westminster Abbey, the Houses of Parliament, the Tower of London, St. Paul’s Cathedral and other sites. Our group had free time to explore on our own, traveling around London on the Underground (subway), iconic double-decker busses or even on public bicycles! Our last day we visited the beautiful Windsor Castle (the queen wasn’t home!) in the morning, had free time in the afternoon, and a wonderful farewell dinner in the evening.
Our final performance was in London’s Grosvenor Chapel, near the U.S. Embassy and where American soldiers worshipped during World War II. We gave another terrific concert for an appreciative audience, which included members of the Chelsey Pensioners, former British Army members in their bright scarlet uniforms and medals. As expected, the audiences especially enjoyed our medleys of Ameri-can folk songs and joined us in the clapping!
Overall, our trip went very smoothly because of our excellent tour manager and local guides who made all of our arrangements, and because of our wonderful choir members and parishioners who get along well and abide by the important rule of travel: go with the flow! This was a memorable adventure in which we were able to share some of our music, faith and culture with others and learn much about their history and culture as well. We are so grateful for the support of St. Michael parishioners, especially in helping with our fundraisers and the tre-mendous audience who attended our pre-tour concert – we were touched and overwhelmed by the large crowd. Thank you!
