Teece Museum of Classical Antiquities The Teece Museum welcomed the return of St Anne’s Catholic School, who visited the new exhibition Fantastic Feasts on Monday. Arts Digital Lab The Arts Digital Lab is hosting NZ Wikipedian at Large Dr Mike Dickison from May 10th until June 7th. Mike is on a one-year contract supported by the US-based Wikimedia Foundation which runs Wikipedia. Since July 2019 he has travelled from Northland to Invercargill, and has been based at Auckland Museum, New Zealand Geographic, the National Library of NZ, Landcare Research, and Otago Museum, where he ran public events such as "edit-a-thons" and helped those institutions move their collections and information onto Wikipedia. Wikipedia is the 5th most popular site on the Internet, with 70 million visitors a day. It exists in 301 languages, with 5.6 million articles in English Wikipedia alone. It is advertising-free, and the only site in the top 100 run by a non-profit charity. Wikipedia results and previews dominate Google Search results, so a university that wants to communicate its research needs to be developing a Wikipedia strategy. As well as Wikipedia, Mike will be talking about Wikimedia Commons, an image library of over 53 million freely-usable photographs, and Wikidata, a new project to create a computer-readable "card catalogue" for Wikipedia. While Mike is visiting UC he will run a number of events for students, staff and the public. He is also happy to meet with staff and students who have questions about Wikipedia, especially its use in the university as a research tool, and the possibility of assigning Wikipedia articles as assessment tools for students instead of essays. How to vandalise Wikipedia Friday, May 17, 2019 1:00 - 2:00 PM A1 Lecture Theatre

Did you hear about the young farmer from Dannevirke who got his name added to a Wikipedia list of mythical Japanese monsters, and it ended up appearing in a board game? Stories like this make it seem like Wikipedia's easy to vandalise; how much can we trust it? How do we detect hoaxes? If we were sociopathic enough to want to get false information into the encyclopaedia and make it stick, what would we need to know? New Zealand Wikipedian at Large Dr Mike Dickison has been travelling the country encouraging the public to improve the accuracy of Wikipedia, but in this one-off exclusive talk he'll turn things around and reveal the grubby world of making it less accurate. Workshop: Hands-on Wikipedia Monday, May 20, 2019 1:00 - 4:00 PM Puaka James Hight 388 Poutama If you've ever wanted to know how Wikipedia works and how to edit it, come along to this practical workshop organised by the NZ Wikipedian at Large, Dr Mike Dickison. There'll be a one-hour talk and tutorial to begin, followed by an afternoon of hands-on editing. Bring a laptop. From Popper to Ruby Jones: image copyrights in the age of Wikipedia Friday, June 7, 2019 12:00 - 1:00 PM A3 Lecture Theatre Do you need permission to film a mural? Who owns the copyright for Popper's passport photo? How do you get a photo into Wikipedia? Is museum taxidermy art, and can you legally photograph it? What is copyfraud? New Zealand Wikipedian at Large Dr Mike Dickison will talk about how we can share our photographs and protect artists' rights, in an age where everyone has a camera in their pocket and reproduction costs nothing. Off campus events: How do we get New Zealand artists into Wikipedia? School of Music On Monday night we were delighted to take our New Music Cental concert off-site again this year, to the central library, Tūranga! This week’s concert featured UC student compositions and was a great opportunity for our students to perform and have their works performed in a new venue.

Last week songwriting students had the privilege of spending a couple of hours in conversation with iconic New Zealand songwriter, Bic Runga. It was a wonderful opportunity for them to discuss all facets of songwriting with someone as accomplished as Bic.

The first High School Highlights concert for 2019 was held on Wednesday May 8, featuring students of Rangi Ruru Girls’ School. It was an eclectic programme and a great opportunity for the students to use the facilities in town, with a UC music student as MC.

Europe Day (9 May) was introduced in 1985 by the European Community (the predecessor to the European Union) commemorating the signing of the Schuman Declaration on 9 May 1950 - proposing the creation of the European Coal and Steel Community , the first European Community, which was finally established in 1952. The NCRE traditionally celebrates by holding visibility events at UC during the week of Europe Day. Last week the NCRE hosted a stand in the Undercroft, running an interactive EU quiz and asking students with European ties to pin their name on a map of the EU on their home country. On Monday 13 May the NCRE hosted the Polish Ambassador HE Zbigniew Gniatkowski and international affairs analyst Mr Jacek Foks. Mr Foks delivered a special Europe Day Lecture on “Foreign Policy of Poland as a Member of the Euro-Atlantic Community” to a group of UC staff, students and external guests, which was followed by a lively discussion.

In April, the Confucius Institute took seven senior leaders from schools and the University of Canterbury to China, including Jocelyn Howard (Senior Lecturer in the College of Education, Health and Human Development), Sarah Caseley (Acadmic Business Development Manager, College of Science) and Evgeny Pavlov (Head of Global, Cultural and Language Studies) from the University of Canterbury. The delegation was for thirteen days, during which time the leaders visited the Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) and various schools. Visiting HUST was an opportunity to further cement the university’s relationship with HUST and may lead to more opportunities to collaborate in the future. Straight after the principals’ delegation, CIUC also took a group of 41 students and seven teachers to China, where they visited Wuhan, Beijing and Shanghai. The feedback from the camp so far has been positive, with students saying that it has increased their motivation to continue studying Chinese. CIUC has also had the opportunity to visit several libraries in Christchurch to give library patrons a chance to experience Chinese culture. These visits were well received, with many children taking part in activities such as learning Chinese calligraphy. CIUC has also restarted its Chinese Culture on the Road programme where we visit schools to promote Chinese language programmes. We have so far visited St Teresa’s School Riccarton, and have been asked to hold our programme in several other schools. NEWS AND EVENTS http://www.canterbury.ac.nz/arts/arts-news/
