Statement from WiN IAEA President

Dear WiNners,

It is my pleasure to welcome you to a new year as part of Women in Nuclear IAEA. Since the elections in December last year, the Executive Committee has been brainstorming on how to improve WiN IAEA so that it works to the greatest advantage of our members.

WiN was traditionally seen as a support system for women working in the nuclear field, with WiN IAEA as the local chapter for IAEA staff. At the IAEA, it numbered over 200 members when it was most popular, but membership has steadily declined in recent years. Therefore, the Executive Committee decided to conduct a survey to enable us to focus on the main needs of our members. One of the conclusions from the survey is that our members understand the role of WiN IAEA as primarily networking, most commonly by meeting other female professionals and those who support women in science and technology at WiN events (90.63%). Members’ responses indicate that they want more events:

· introducing successful women and challenges they faced (75%)

· providing networking opportunities (71.88%)

· offering mentoring opportunities (65.63%)

· featuring scientific/technical themes (56.25%)

From the survey, it was found that WiN IAEA should liaise more with external parties (75.86%), but also with HR (62.07%).

To this end, the Executive Committee has started partnerships with HR and Vienna-based organizations, with three networking events in the first half of 2019. I hope to see many more of you at our future events and look forward to expanding your networks.

All the best,

Naida

WiN IAEA 2019 President

Beginning life and work in a new environment can be overwhelming!

Ø How long after the start of my contract do I have to ship my goods to Vienna? Ø What is an Austrian legitimation card? Ø How do I find a school for my kids? Ø What are the typical rental costs for an apartment or a house? Ø How long may I drive in Austria with foreign license plates? Ø When must I use winter tyres? Ø Whom should I contact in an emergency during duty travel?

The answers to these and many other questions were revealed by Jane Hoole from the Agency’s Department of Management at WiN’s ‘lunch & learn’ presentation and Q&A session to welcome newcomers to the Agency held on 23 October 2018.

Munching pizza, the 17 participants — newcomers, current staff members and retirees — enjoyed Jane’s presentation of seven reader-friendly information booklets recently issued by the Transport and General Support Section (TGSS) of the Division of General Services (MTGS). The booklets are a useful reference for all staff, not only for newcomers.

They are available on line at Intranet http://insite.iaea.org/tgss-services and at MTGS’s Customer Service Point at A-0750. There — in an attractive reception area — MTGS staff will respond to queries, accept and dispense forms and documents, or direct you to the service you need. These — such as the VIC-Housing Service, the Visa & Customs Unit and the Transport and Shipment Unit — are located in adjacent offices.

The newcomers’ welcome lunch was well received — it provided useful information and an opportunity to meet new colleagues.

Welcome to WiN IAEA

International Women’s Day @ VIC

On 7 March 2019, the Canadian Mission hosted an International Women’s Day event in the VIC. Moderated by Ambassador Hulan of Canada, Rhonda Evans from the World Institute for Nuclear Security (WINS) spoke on a panel along with Ambassador Grossi (Argentina), Ambassador Hammer (Australia), and the President of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission. The event was attended by ambassadors and representatives of some missions to the UN. The panel members provided examples from their respective countries on how the gender gap in nuclear sciences was being tackled and referred to some of the obstacles which still hindered closing this gap: mainly social and institutional biases, unconscious and conscious ones. Importantly, deeply committed support by senior management at the highest level was seen as essential for comprehensive inclusion of women into any organization with a vision of an equal distribution of women and men by 2030.

2019 Vienna Science and Engineering Fair

Inst itute of Nuclear Mater ials

Management (INMM)

The Vienna Chapter of INMM organizes an annual Science and Engineering Fair where international Schools in and around Austria participate. The Science Fair is hosted by the participating schools in Vienna. This year the Vienna International School (VIS) opened its doors to welcome the students with their projects and hundreds fair visitors.

The main goal of the fair is to encourage young students to pursue education in science and engineering and to inspire them to consider future careers in these areas. After presenting their projects to the judges, all participating students receive a certificate. Additional awards are given to students whose projects are exceptionally good.

Every year at the Science and Engineering Fair, members of Women in Nuclear IAEA Chapter serve as judges. Also this year many WiNners did so and awarded a special prize for the best projects submitted by girls in the senior and junior category. This year, the awards went to Ann-Sophie Latzer for her project Mechanisms and significance of genome size variation in rotifers and to Dana Khartabil for hers, entitled Which optical disc is a better diffraction grating for spectrometers? WiN congratulates the winners, who each received a €50 voucher. It is always heart warming to meet these young, energetic students and note the enthusiasm they put into their science projects.

On 25 April 2019, sixty girls aged 11 to 16 spent the day participating in activities organized by colleagues from different departments of the Agency, to introduce the girls to professions where women are under-represented, and inspire them to consider careers in nuclear science, technology, engineering, mathematics and other technical fields.

DDG-MT Mary Alice Hayward opened the event with a welcome address that set the tone for the day, saying: “I hope you will take one thing forward and let it inspire you in your future schoolwork, and later your career.”

This year, participants had the opportunity to attend one of two workshops: A day at the IAEA or Build your first robot.

Participants learned about the role of the Agency in nuclear and radiological emergency response, had the chance to experience a day in the life of a nuclear inspector and were able to attend a workshop. At A day at the IAEA, they learned about the Agency's work — with support from Member States — to tackle global issues, including climate change, insect pest control, and treatment of diseases using nuclear technology. The Build your first robot workshop gave them an opportunity to build robots using electronic panels and recycled material.

Also, during the day, WiN members had the opportunity to speak to the girls about their work and activities. Janette Donner comments: “We were delighted to have had the opportunity to introduce our network to the group.

Our members with different backgrounds (physicists, finance officers, editors, programmers, communication experts) spoke to the girls about their education, work experience and the fact that we are still a minority in our male-dominated workplace.

The goal was not only to tell the girls our individual success stories, but also to make them aware that networking is an essential part of career development, no matter which path they choose in life”.

The Agency has participated for the 10th year in a row in the City of Vienna's Annual Daughters' Day event and will continue to do so in the future.

WiN IAEA attends WINS round table on Gender Par ity in Nuclear Security

On 28 and 29 May, the World Institute for Nuclear Security (WINS) organized a round table event where 16 different representatives from around the globe were invited to discuss issues related to achieving gender parity in Nuclear Security. Participants represented associations such as Brussels Binder, INMM, BBC, One Acre Fund, Women in Nuclear IAEA, WiN Global, Bruce Power, Vienna Center for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation, and Women in International Security. All discussions were conducted under Chatham House Rules, i.e. participants are free to use information shared, but are not allowed to reveal who made any comment, with a view to increasing openness of discussion.

The intention of the round table was to learn about what worked well and what did not in highlighting the issue of achieving gender parity in Nuclear Security. A set of recommendations from the workshop is being prepared by WINS and should be published shortly.

On 28 May, the round table was followed by a networking event to which Ambassadors Ms. Kjersti E. Andersen (Norway) and Alejandro Solano Ortiz (Costa Rica), WINS director (Roger Howsley) and Mary Alice Hayward (DDG-MT, IAEA) spoke on the importance of achieving gender parity in all fields. Other members of the Group of Friends of Women in Nuclear (https://austria.embassy.gov.au/vien/JuneBOG2017GoFoWiN.html ) attended the event too.

WiN IAEA members attended in large numbers. We encourage our members to bring along interested friends and colleagues to future events!
