SAA Vocal Music Audition Requirements Vocal performance

· Each candidate is asked to bring a prepared and memorized song chosen from the list below. Only a song from this list will

be considered in the audition. Due to copyright law, you must purchase this sheet music. SAA will not provide the sheet

music to any party. Purchase the complete book and recordings from Amazon. Pathways of Song, Vol. 1, by Frank LaForge

& Will Earhart, Low voice for basses and altos, High voice for tenors and sopranos. You may sing it in German or English.

· Piano accompaniment tracks will be available in the audition room. Obtain these accompaniments on your own for practice.

Scales

· Each candidate will sing a Major Scale, ascending and descending, with accurate intonation; using solfege, numbers, or

neutral “la”.

· Each candidate will sing a Natural Minor Scale, ascending and descending, with accurate intonation; using solfege,

numbers, neutral “la”.

· Each candidate will sing a Chromatic Scale, ascending and descending, with accurate intonation; using solfege, numbers,

neutral “la”.

Tonal Memory

· Each candidate will listen to two (2) examples of a rhythmic series of 5 tones.

· Each candidate will demonstrate aural ability by singing back correct pitches and rhythms in ex. 1 (a Major tonality.)

· Each candidate will demonstrate aural ability by singing back correct pitches and rhythms in ex. 2 (a Minor tonality.)

Music Theory Terms

· Each candidate will identify and define 5 terms and/or musical symbols.

Sight reading

· Each candidate will sight sing two 4 measure melodic/rhythmic examples. The first example will be in a major key. The

second example will be in a minor key.

· Each candidate will be given the block chord, arpeggio, and first pitch in order to establish tonality. Each candidate will

have 30 seconds to practice the example.

· Each candidate may choose to sing using solfege, numbers, or a neutral syllable such as “la.”

· The examples of sight-reading given are comparable to Georgia All-State High School 9th grade level.

Approved solo repertoire (Choose only one solo from this list to perform from memory. No other selections are valid):

1. “Die Lotosblume” (The Lotus Flower) by Robert Schumann, found in Pathways of Song, Vol 1, page 29

2. “Schneeglöckchen” (Snowbells) by Robert Schumann, found in Pathways of Song, Vol 1. Page 42
