KEYNOTE SPEAKER AND
PRE-WORKSHOP FACILITATOR
Erica Wheeler Speaker Educator Performing Artist
www.ericawheeler.com Winner of the 2008 National Association
for Interpretation Media Awards for
"Best Interpretive Music"
Erica Wheeler is a sense of place consultant and visitor experience specialist who has, through her Soulful
Stewardship Method, helped thousands of individuals find and share their sense-of-place stories. Over the past
decade she has worked extensively with the interpretive staff of parks, museums and heritage sites across the
country, including the National Park Service, State Parks, learning centers and historic sites. Her proven practices
can be applied to all kinds of sites, from urban to historic, and from military to wilderness. Her simple, yet powerful
approach helps people discover their sense of place connections no matter where they are.
Erica's personal passion for nature, history and place awakens that passion in others. With a professional
background in songwriting and the performing arts, she adds a wealth of knowledge for understanding how to
communicate complex topics quickly and effectively. Her undergraduate years as an aspiring wildlife biologist
(Hampshire College) also grounds her approach and understanding of scientific inquiry. As a speaker, educator and
performing artist, Erica works with all ages to help inspire the personal connections to place that leads to caring and
ultimately stewardship.
PRE-WORKSHOP: Sense of Place and the Art of Interpretation A Soulful Stewardship Intensive - How do we inspire meaningful connections between people and place? How do
we help people with diverse interests find personally relevant meanings at new or unfamiliar sites? How do we
embrace the layers of time, memory and meaning that places hold? Take a full day to nourish your own sense of
place and gain tools to inspire others. This five-part training will empower creative thinking and help generate fresh
ideas. You’ll uncover your “touchstone story,” discuss the art and science of interpretation, practice your delivery
skills, and craft a well-balanced program that engages visitors with your resource in a new way. Rejuvenate your
passion for place. Cultivate connections that lead to stewardship. Hone your skills and gain tools you can
use at your site right away.
KEYNOTE: How Sense of Place Inspires Stewardship
Experience an unforgettable journey across the American landscape and the lives lived there. Using story, song,
reflection, humor and conversation, Erica takes you through her journey from aspiring wildlife biologist, to award-
winning songwriter, to sense of place advocate. You’ll leave uplifted with a recharged passion for the
work you do, as well as fresh ideas you can use in your community.
