Dr. David Kohl is Professor Emeritus of Agricultural Finance and Small Business
Management and Entrepreneurship at Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA. Dr. Kohl has
traveled over 9 million miles in his career and conducted over 6,000 workshops and
seminars for a variety of agricultural audiences. Dr. Kohl’s personal involvement with
agriculture and interaction with key industry players provides a unique perspective into the
future trends of the agricultural industry and economy.
Dr. Matt Roberts has been a commodity broker , professor , entrepreneur , and
speaker. A native of Bolivar, MO, he began as a commodity and energy derivatives
broker in the Vienna, Austria office of CA Global Futures in ‘96. Matt has traded or
brokered almost everything, including stocks, bonds, futures, options, and over-the-
counter derivatives. Dr. Roberts is an active researcher, consultant and speaker, and has
been quoted in national publications and is a frequent contributor on national TV
programs. Dr. Roberts taught economics and grain marketing at Ohio State University for
15 years, publishing in multiple technical journals. He is also co-owner of a chain of
indoor rock climbing gyms in Ohio.
Jarrod Barnhart was born in Rockford, Illinois, and spent his childhood on a family-
run dairy farm in North Central Indiana. Most of his life has been centered around
agriculture and it has always been something he enjoyed. He joined the Silveus team in
early 2008 and has been using his background in agriculture to help farmers and ranchers
make better risk management decisions ever since. He likes the challenge of taking a
tough agricultural outlook and helping producers make the best decisions by educating
them on all the tools available to help them achieve the best possible outcomes.
Dr. Allen Featherstone was appointed at Kansas State University in 1986, where his
primary responsibilities have been teaching and research. In addition, he directed the on-
campus Masters and Ph.D. program for 9 years and the distance graduate program since its
inception. He began serving as head of the Ag Econ Department in 2013. Featherstone
was instrumental in developing the award-winning Master of Agribusiness distance
education program, which launched in 1998. As a leading agriculture finance scholar, he
has studied land markets, investment decisions, mergers in the financial services industry,
the probability of agricultural loan default and loan loss severity, the influence of taxes on
farmland, and alternative federal tax systems.
Susan Metzger joined the Kansas Depar tment of Agriculture in March 2015 as an
Assistant Secretary and currently serves as a Deputy Secretary. As Deputy Secretary,
Mrs. Metzger leads the agency's policy efforts related to water and natural resources
and oversees the agency’s legal and human resources departments. Prior to joining
KDA, she served as the Chief of Planning and Policy for the Kansas Water Office for
eleven years. She also serves as the team leader for the development of the Vision for
the Future of Water Supply in Kansas.
2018 Kansas Ag Bankers Conference Presenters
Ed Elfmann serves as SVP of Agricultural and Rural Banking Policy for the
American Bankers Association in Washington, D.C. Elfmann has been with ABA since
June 2012 and is ABA’s head of policy on agricultural credit and lending issues. In
addition to ag policy, Elfmann works on swaps and derivatives policy, financial services,
appropriations, and small business issues for ABA. He serves on the Chicago Mercantile
Exchange’s Ag Markets Advisory Committee. He earned his Master’s degree from George
Washington University and his B.A. from Hamline University in St. Paul, Minn.
Eric Snodgrass is the Director of Undergraduate Studies for the Depar tment of
Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Each year, he
guides over 1500 students through the wild side of weather in several basic and advanced
courses. He advises all undergraduate majors and minors in atmospheric science and
supervises graduate teaching assistants and master’s students. Snodgrass’s research
initiatives focus on K-12 science education as well as weather forecasting applications in
financial markets.
Randy Blach is CEO of CattleFax, an organization focused on helping member cattle
producers make more profitable marketing and management decisions. CattleFax is the
cattle and beef industry leader on timely market information, analyses and research. Blach
came to CattleFax in 1981 and served as director of market analysis for 16 years and
accepted his current role in 2001. A Colorado native, Blach and his family remain actively
involved in cattle ranching with cow/calf, stocker and finished cattle. He was raised on his
family’s ranch in Yuma, Colo., and graduated from Colorado State University with a
degree in animal science.
Rik Roberts spent his youth in Kentucky on tobacco and horse farms. After earning
a degree in communications from Bethany College, he worked for Simon & Schuster in
Columbus, OH. He joined a nationally touring comedy troupe, “Midwest Comedy Tool &
Die” in ‘92, and soon jumped into stand-up comedy. Rik, who calls Nashville home,
spends his time off stage writing comedy songs. He’s a member of the National Speakers
Association and is a board member of the Christian Comedy Association.
Dr. Barry Flinchbaugh is a Professor of Agr icultural Economics at Kansas State
University. A native of York, Pennsylvania, he holds a B.S. in Animal Science and M.S.
in Agricultural Economics degrees from Pennsylvania State University and a Ph.D. in
Agricultural Economics from Purdue University. He joined Kansas State University in
1971. Dr. Flinchbaugh continues to teach a junior-senior level course in agricultural
policy and lectures throughout Kansas and the nation on agricultural and economic policy.
Lonny Geiman is the President of Bandura Plus, a Kansas based organizational
development and consulting business. Bandura Plus helps organizations with strategic
and succession planning, employee and manager training, and the fundamentals of
good human resource practices. Geiman’s appreciation for agriculture goes back to
growing up and working on a farm and with livestock in Central Kansas. After years of
a corporate background and sales training roles, Geiman recognized a need five years
ago to help hard working agriculture operations with better planning and with growing
and retaining good employees.
