PRINCIPAL’S REPORTTeachers have begun the reporting processand the upcoming mid-year reports aredesigned to give parents a comprehensiveoverview of how their child is progressing ineach subject that they study. At ExeterHigh, we follow the EducationDepartment’s policy in relation to reportwriting and collection. The departmentstates ‘This report should be given to

parents at either a three-way (teacher parent–student), or atwo-way (parent-teacher) interview’. In exceptionalcircumstances, the report may be sent home and a telephoneinterview arranged. These interviews are an opportunity todiscuss your child’s progress and look at ways to address anyconcerns that may be raised in the report.

Last week saw the annual NAPLAN testing take place and Iwas very impressed with the way our Grade 7 and 9 studentsapplied themselves to the tests over the week. When the schoolreceives the results, I will share these in a future newsletter.Parents will also receive their child’s results in the mail in thecoming months.

The term 2 school social was a huge success last Thursdaynight with over 125 students attending. Once again, ourstudents excelled in the costumes they wore with the themeof Iconic Duos and the behaviour of all who attended wasoutstanding. I would also like to thank our staff who attendedas we could not hold such events without their support.

As I have discussed in previous newsletters, attendance atschool is essential if students are going to be given the bestpossible opportunity to succeed – both at school and beyondin later years. The middle two terms can always be a challengewith illness but can I please ask parents to notify the schooloffice if your child is away with sickness so that our attendancerecords can be marked appropriately.

2018 GRADE 7 CAMPOn Wednesday 2nd May, the grade 7 team set off for a bigthree day camp at Camp Banksia, Port Sorell. The grade 7’sparticipated in a wide range of activities for the 3 days focussingon team building.

On the first day, the bus stopped before the camp (approx. 4km) and we walked along the foreshore in Port Sorell, then ontothe beach and into camp. Once we arrived, we were dividedup into tribes of approximately 14 students with two grade10 Student Advisors/SLC members. We were given colouredbandanas so that we could easily recognise which team

everyone belonged to. We were warned that if we didn’t haveour bandanas with us at all times, we would receive a physicalexercise consequence. Our first round of activities in our tribewas down on the beach. These ranged from sand sculptures,iron person, tug of war, beach flags and handstandcompetitions. By this time we were starving, so we headed offto lunch where we were fed incredibly yummy food (which wasthe same standard for all the other meals – so much food!).After dinner, we had Miss Camp Banksia where each cabinhad to make a fashion outfit out of newspaper, a garbage bag,sticky tape and any other items from our cabin. Everybody hadone hour to construct their outfit and then parade down therunway to the judges. We think that the best dressed was MrLendvay!

On the second day, we made up names for our tribes anddeveloped a chant and dance to be performed at regular timesthroughout the camp. The names of the tribes were The RedRoosters (red), Pink Panthers (pink), Too Blue and a Few (blue),The Purple Ninjas (purple) and finally the yellow team The SunWarriors, which Mrs Parish and Mr Lendvay sometimes referredto them as the Sun Warmers. Again, we spent the day doingmany team building activities. Most students seemed to enjoythe basketball the most. After a long, fun and exhausting day,we watched a movie as a grade.

On our third and final day, we went to the gym and played alot of games as an entire grade 7 team. We had to competeagainst one another again with our tribal chants and dancesincluding spelling our team names out with our bodies.

All in all, this was an amazing camp where we learnt a lot abouteach other and formed new friends.

2018 LAUNCESTON DRAMACOMPETITION

The Launceston Speech and DramaCompetitions is a well-regardedcompetition that has been operatingcontinuously now for 111 years. Studentsranging from junior primary through to year12 have the opportunity to showcase theirtalent over the course of a week, in a variety

of drama disciplines. Last week saw grade 8 and 10 ExeterDrama students competing in both the Senior Creative Dramaand Senior Individual Creative program sections. Students hada time limit of 5 minutes in the Creative Group and 3 minutes inthe Creative Individual program to explore a theme through avariety of drama and other Art forms ranging from: scriptedpieces, vocal work, prose/poetry, mime, movement, singingetc. Both these sections focus on performance skills, timing,stage-craft and in the Creative Group, the ability to work as acohesive team.

The 9/10 Creative Individual program saw Elizabeth Rogersgaining 3rd place with 87 points and Rebecca Hyatt gaininga Highly Commended with 86 points. The adjudicatorcomplimented the girls on their energetic performances, welldeveloped characters, clear, articulate voices that were wellprojected; and excellent use of staging.

In the Senior Creative Group section of the Launceston DramaCompetitions Exeter gained 89 points in a very competitiveclass. The group consisted of Elizabeth Rogers and RebeccaHyatt along with Grade 8’s: Rachel Dickson, Carrie Jetson,Elise Young, Ella Greenhalf, Nikita Hockey and Layla PrestonOgier. The adjudicator was impressed with the involvementof all group members, their use of performance space, facialexpression and body language, the creative use of slapstick forthe movement piece, and excellent timing.

These places and scores could not have been achieved withouteveryone’s dedication and immense commitment, working

many lunchtimes on top of joining each other’s drama classes.Well done to all those involved.

Please note that during our Cross Country unit that student’snormal Health lesson becomes a second practical session forweeks four, five and six of Term 2. The timetable indicatesthe day and lessons that each class will be participating inCross Country sessions. It is a requirement that all students areprepared correctly with a change of gear so they can participateto the best of their ability.
