2018 ANNUAL REPORT
I was honored to serve as the Chairman
of Family Gateway’s Board of Directors
in 2018. This year, we took on a new
leadership role in the Dallas community
as the designated service access point
for families with children experiencing
homelessness. Serving the community in
this way opened our eyes to the extent
of family homelessness in Dallas. In 2018
alone, we received 4,800 calls for assistance
through the Homeless Crisis Helpline and
identified approximately 2,000 families
with children who were literally or
imminently homeless; this is an estimated
6,000 children. Most of those families were
living in their car or staying in a hotel and
out of funds. While these children and
families are experiencing trauma and
difficult times, their strength and resilience
keep us going. We are inspired daily to
continue this important work and hope
you will be inspired to join us in the fight
against family homelessness.
Stephen Hipp
It was a privilege to lead Family Gateway in 2018,
a year of transformational growth and leadership
for the agency. A few highlights included:
• Acting as the designated service access
point for families with children
experiencing homelessness. This means
we assess families for needs and determine
the appropriate intervention, triaging
families into shelter when necessary.
• Transforming our emergency shelter
to be focused on housing and income
strategies for adults and education
stabilization for children.
• Building capacity to help more families
move out of shelter and into housing
with the appropriate wrap-around services.
• Continuing to serve families of all types and
sizes, keeping the family unit together and
working with them as they are.
We are honored to fill a critical gap in our
community and, with your help, will continue
to do everything we can to support the most
vulnerable children and families in Dallas.

REPORT CARD ON FAMILY HOMELESSNESS
Family Gateway serves as the point of entry (access point) in Dallas County for families with children experiencing or near homelessness. The Assessment & Diversion team answers Helpline calls, assesses families for needs, and determines the appropriate intervention.
In 2018, we fielded more than 4,800 calls through the Homeless Crisis Helpline or through walk-ins.
The Helpline only became publicly available in July 2018; this does not yet give us the full piture of family homelessness in our community.

families received a preliminary screening to determine the urgency of their needs and eligibility for services.
