calculation for the former enrollment will be adjusted to reflect actual hours attended. The student will be
responsible for any balance owed from the former enrollment, a $100.00 drop fee and a $200.00 re-enrollment fee,
to be paid prior to re-enrollment.
Students who re-enroll more than 30 days after their withdrawal date may be evaluated scholastically in the same
manner as a transfer student to determine class level assignment. Tuition rates current at the time of re-enrollment
will apply. Arrangement for satisfactory payment of any applicable balance owed under the previous enrollment
must be made prior to re-enrollment.
Students are allowed one re-entry per program. Not all re-enrollment applicants will be accepted.
Former JLA students who have withdrawn more than once will not be considered for re-enrollment.

that credits will transfer to or from any educational institution. It is highly recommended and you are advised to
make certain that you know the transfer of credit policy of Jenny Lea Academy and of any other educational
institutions you may in the future want to transfer the credits earned at Jenny Lea Academy before you execute an
enrollment contract or agreement.

FINANCIAL AID
Jenny Lea Academy of Cosmetology Student Handbook
2018-07-01 21
Jenny Lea Academy of Cosmetology is approved by the United States Department of Education to offer the following
federal financial assistance programs whereby an eligible student is awarded a grant and/or loan for postsecondary
education. To be eligible to receive financial aid, a student must be enrolled at least half time.
FINANCIAL AID OPTIONS: FEDERAL PELL GRANT PROGRAM AND DIRECT STUDENT LOAN
PROGRAM
FEDERAL PELL GRANT
Grants are NOT repaid and are awarded primarily on the basis of a family’s ability or lack of ability to pay for higher
education. The amount you may be awarded in a Pell Grant depends on your cost of attendance, expected family
contribution (EFC), enrollment status (full or part-time) and whether you attend for a full academic year or less.
Pell Grants are awarded only to undergraduate students (those who haven’t earned a bachelor’s or graduate
degree).
FEDERAL STAFFORD LOAN
Student loans, unlike grants, are borrowed money that must be repaid, with interest, just like car loans and
mortgages. You cannot have student loans canceled because you didn’t like the education you received, didn’t get
a job in your field of study or you’ve been having financial difficulty. Loans are a legal obligation. We recommend
you read the Department of Education publication “Your Federal Student Loans: Learn the Basics and Manage Your
Debt”. You can find this publication at www.studentaid.ed.gov/repayingpub . The amount you may be awarded in
student loans depends on your cost of attendance, expected family contribution (EFC), enrollment status (full or
part-time) and whether you attend for a full academic year or less.
FEDERAL PLUS LOAN
This program enables parents with good credit histories to borrow for a dependent student. A parent may borrow
up to the cost of education minus any estimated financial aid per year. Repayment, plus a variable market rate of
interest is required with monthly payments beginning sixty days after the loan has been disbursed.
Jenny Lea Academy also participates in the following Federal programs: Veterans Administration, G.I Bill, MYCAA
(for military spouses) and Vocational Rehabilitation.
FAFSA: FREE APPLICATION FOR FEDERAL STUDENT AID
In order to have funds available by the time school begins,
students are encouraged to begin the application process two
months prior to the class starting date. Students must
complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid
(www.FAFSA.gov) including all verification documents and
Jenny Lea Academy Financial Aid Supplemental Forms to be
considered for grants and student loans. For more information
please contact the Financial Aid Office at (423) 926-9095,
extension 6.
Go to www.fafsa.gov to complete the FAFSA. Usually within 3-4 business days after you have completed your FAFSA
and it has been processed, the school will receive your information and will contact you to go over your Financial
Aid eligibility.

4. The student must notify the Financial Aid Office of any changes in his or her financial situation.
5. The student must notify the Financial Aid Office of any outside scholarships, grants, or other sources of
assistance.
6. The student must comply with all financial aid deadlines.
ABOUT FINANCIAL AID
• Selection Criteria: Students must file all forms as requested in a timely manner. Also, students may be
required to provide documentation to verify information provided on the FAFSA.

VERIFICATION POLICY
Verification is a process which requires an institution to confirm the accuracy of information used to determine a
student's eligibility for federal student assistance. A student's file may be selected for verification by either the school
or by the U.S. Department of Education. The school will perform verification procedure only on files selected for
verification, unless the school administrator has reasons to believe that the file contains conflicting information.
If a student's file has been selected for review under the verification process, depending upon the reason the file
was selected, some of all of the following information may be requested from the student:
• A completed Verification Worksheet, signed by the student, spouse or parent when applicable.
• Verification of income:
o A copy of an IRS Tax Return Transcript from the U.S. Internal Revenue Service will be required. A
Tax Return Transcript will serve to confirm the accuracy of income and other tax related amounts
that the student reported on his/her FAFSA application.
o A signed copy of the student’s (and parent’s when applicable) prior-prior year Tax Return. This
can also serve to confirm the accuracy of income and other tax related amounts that the student
reported on his/her FAFSA application.
Obtaining Tax Return Transcripts
Students can obtain tax return transcripts:
▪ Via the Internet at www.irs.gov
▪ Via phone by calling 1-800-908-9946
▪ Via mail or fax by completing IRS Form 4506T-EZ
Internet and phone requests are easy and tax return transcripts will be mailed to the tax filer’s address within 5-10
days.
Submission of Form 4506T-EZ can authorize mailing of the transcript to a third party (such as the institution) but will
take approximately 30 days.
Jenny Lea Academy of Cosmetology Student Handbook
2018-07-01 23
Other documentation may be requested by the institution to verify the accuracy of your application information
including, but not limited to, marital settlement agreements, divorce decrees, W-2 forms, etc.
Students must provide the above information to the institution within 120 days of the student’s last date of
attendance, or before the respective award year funding processes close in accordance with dates published
annually in the Federal Register, whichever is earlier. Failure to complete the verification requirements on a timely
basis may result in forfeiture of any federal aid awarded during the award year.
Students will be notified by the Financial Aid Office if any discrepancies are discovered during the verification
process. Students may be required to correct any erroneous information by using the ISIR correction process at
www.fafsa.gov. The verification process is not considered to be completed during periods of corrective action.
Corrections generally include a recalculation of the student's EFC, and electronic resubmission of applicant
information through the FAFSA Central Processor.
If a student's award changes as a result of the verification process, the student will be counseled and informed of
how the change affects his/her packaging and financial obligations to the institution.
In the event this verification process identifies that a student received an overpayment of federal aid, the student
will be required to refund the overpayment promptly. The student will be ineligible for any future federal aid until
any and all amounts owed are repaid. If the student fails to repay any refund due, or if the institution determines
that the student may have engaged in fraud or misrepresentation regarding the federal aid process, the student will
be referred to the U.S. Department of Education for further investigation and prosecution.
Students will forfeit their right to federal assistance for non-compliance with verification policies.

SATISFACTORY ACADEMIC PROGRESS (SAP)
The SAP policy is consistently applied to all students enrolled at JENNY LEA ACADEMY. It is contained in the student
handbook to ensure that all students receive a copy prior to enrollment. The SAP policy complies with guidelines
established by NACCAS and US Department of Education regulations.
Satisfactory progress ensures students successfully complete the program in a timely manner.
Satisfactory Academic Progress includes maintaining a 70% GPA and 67% attendance. To determine whether a
student is meeting SAP, students are assigned academic learning and a minimum number of practical evaluations
that must be completed and passed. Students must make up failed or missed tests and incomplete assignments, and
pass a FINAL written and practical exam prior to graduation.
Leaves of absences do not affect the GPA or attendance. All leave of absences will extend the student’s contract
period and maximum time frame by the same number of days taken in the leave of absence and will not be included
in the cumulative attendance percentage calculation.. Students who re-enter the institution because of a leave of
absence or withdrawal are required to re-enter in the same progress status as when they left.
Students who withdrew prior to completing their program and wish to re-enroll will return in the same SAP status
as at the time of withdrawal.
Students are evaluated for SAP as follows:
Cosmetology - 450, 900 and 1200 clocked (actual) hours
Aesthetics - 375 clocked (actual) hours
Nail Technician - 300 clocked (actual) hours
Instructor – 150 hours clocked (actual) hours
Transfer students will be evaluated at the midpoint of the contracted hours or the established evaluation periods,
whichever comes first.
Evaluations will determine if the student has met the minimum requirements for SAP. Evaluation frequency ensures
student have at least one evaluation by midpoint of the program. The attendance percentage is determined by
dividing total number of scheduled hours.
At the end of each evaluation period JLA will determine if the student has maintained at least 67% cumulative
attendance and 70% academics since their start date, which indicates that given the same attendance rate the
student will graduate within the maximum timeframe allowed.
The maximum time allowed for students to complete each program at SAP is as follows:
Maximum Time Allowed
Course Weeks Scheduled Hours
Cosmetology – Full Time 60 2,250
Cosmetology – Part Time 112 2,250
Aesthetics – Full Time 41 1,125
Aesthetics – Part Time 56 1,125
Nail Technician – Full Time 41 900
The maximum time allowed for transfer students will be determined based on 67% of the scheduled contracted
hours. All accepted transfer hours from another institution are counted as both attempted and completed hours
for the purpose of determining when the allowable maximum time-frame has been exhausted.
The qualitative element used to determine academic progress is a reasonable system of grades as determined by
assigned academic learning. Students are assigned academic learning and a minimum number of practical
Jenny Lea Academy of Cosmetology Student Handbook
2018-07-01 25
experiences. Academic learning is evaluated after each unit of study. Practical assignments are evaluated as
completed and counted towards program completion only when rated as satisfactory or better. If the performance
does not meet satisfactory requirements, it is not counted and the performance must be repeated.
At least two comprehensive practical skills evaluations will be conducted during the program. Practical skills are
evaluated according to text procedures and set forth in the criteria adopted by JLA. Students must maintain a written
grade average of 70% and pass a final written and practical exam prior to graduation. Students must make up failed
or missed tests and incomplete assignments. Numerical grades are as follows:
94% to 100% 86% to 93% 78% to 85% 70% to 77% 70%
Excellent Very Good Good Satisfactory Failing Below
Students meeting the minimum requirements for academics and attendance at the evaluation point are considered
to be making SAP until the next scheduled SAP. Students will receive a hard copy of SAP determination at the time
of each evaluation. Students failing SAP may have their financial aid interrupted, unless the student is on warning
or has prevailed upon appeal resulting in a status of probation.
SAP WARNING
A student’s initial failure to meet SAP at an evaluation point will be placed on warning and considered to be making
SAP during the warning period. The student will be advised in writing of the actions required to attain SAP by the
next evaluation. If, at the end of the warning period, the student still has not met both the attendance and academic
requirements, the student may be placed on probation and, if applicable, may be deemed ineligible to receive
financial aid.
SAP PROBATION
Students failing to meet attendance or academic SAP after the warning period will be placed on probation and
considered to be making SAP during the probationary period if the student appeals the decision and prevails upon
appeal.
Only students having the ability to meet SAP, either attendance or academic, by the end of the evaluation period
may be placed on probation. Students on an academic plan must be able to meet requirements set forth in the
academic plan by the end of the next evaluation period. Students progressing towards their specific academic plan
will be considered making SAP. The student will be advised in writing of the actions required to attain SAP by the
next evaluation. If, at the end of the probationary period, the student still has not met the attendance and academic
requirements for SAP, the student will be determined as NOT making SAP and will not be eligible to receive financial
aid.
Students may re-establish SAP and financial aid, by meeting minimum attendance and academic requirements by
the end of the warning or probationary period.
APPEALS
Student appeals must contain an explanation of why they failed SAP and what has changed in their situation which
will allow them to meet SAP at the next evaluation.
Students may appeal due to the death of a relative, injury or illness of the student or one of their children or the
illness or injury of a parent provided there is no one else available to care for the parent.
Students must provide documentation of relatives’ death in the form of a funeral notice or obituary. Documentation
required for illness or injury will be a physicians’ note indicating the type of illness or injury and an estimated time
needed for recovery.
Results of the appeal will be noted on the appeal and placed in the students file.

Jenny Lea Academy of Cosmetology Student Handbook
2018-07-01 27
ATTENDANCE
While in Phase 1 students are expected to have 100% attendance. Any
absence during Phase 1 must be pre-approved by the Instructor. Un-
approved absences may result in disciplinary action or dismissal.
The minimum attendance requirement for all remaining Phases is 90% of
the scheduled time. Students are required to be clocked in and in class by
8:30 am. There is a lock-out period on the time-clock. Students are not
allowed to clock in between 8:36 AM and 9:30 AM.
The maximum time frame a Student is allowed to complete their hours is 150% of scheduled hours.
Students are not allowed to stay clocked in past their scheduled clock-out time unless they are working with a client.
ATTENDANCE POLICY (POOL OF HOURS)
Jenny Lea Academy encourages students to attend school every day they are scheduled. However, we understand
that emergencies, inclement weather, and illness can happen. To account for these instances, each program has a
predetermined amount of hours that can be missed without incurring any over contract charges. The number of
hours allowed (“pool of hours”) is the maximum time that a student can be absent before incurring over contract
charges. Students are strongly discouraged from utilizing their pool of hours as vacation time. The total pool of hours
allowed per program is as follows:
10% of contracted program hours are allowed to be missed prior to going into overages. Total absent hours accrued
beyond those hours will result in over contract charges of $10.00 per hour.*
Students with transfer hours will only be allowed to miss 10% of the remaining hours needed to reach the total
program hours. (Example: A cosmetology student has 400 transfer hours and needs 1,100 hours to complete the
cosmetology program at JLA. The student will only be allowed to miss 110 hours before being charged $10 per hour
for overages.)
No student will be allowed longer than one and one-half (1 ½) times the scheduled program length to complete the
program.
*Please note that any absences will bring a student’s attendance percentage down, and the minimum required attendance is
90%. Students who are absent for more than 10% of their contracted program hours will be at risk of being dropped from the
program.
NOTICE OF ABSENCE
Students must call before 8:30 am and speak to or leave a message with the front desk at extension 1 if they are
going to be absent for the day. No-show/no-call students will receive a one day suspension.
No emails, messages, texts, or calls to anyone other than the front desk will be acceptable notification of absence.
Absenteeism for more than fourteen (14) consecutive days without contacting the school will result in the student
being terminated from the program.
LEAVING EARLY
Students are required to clock the number of hours daily as required by their program schedule. Students are not
allowed to leave prior to their scheduled departure time. If a student wishes to leave school early for any reason,
they must consult their instructor prior to clocking out. The student must also sign the sign-out sheet located at the
reception desk. Time missed due to leaving early will add to your total absent hours.

ARRIVING LATE
Time management is an important skill not just for your time as a student, but during your entire life and career.
You are expected to arrive on time and be prepared for the day. Students arriving after 8:35 am are late and will not
be allowed to clock in or enter the classroom until 9:30 am, losing one hour.
All students are allowed two late1 arrivals per month without a valid excuse.2 (This includes late arrivals from lunch.)
The third and any subsequent late arrivals without a valid excuse2 will result in the student being sent home for the
day and the loss of that day’s hours.
This will also include leaving early, without a valid excuse as described below. With valid excuse please understand
this still effects your attendance %.
Students with a valid excuse2 will be allowed to clock in late1 and stay for the remainder of the day.
1” Late” arrivals must still arrive at school by 9:30 am. If a student arrives after 9:30 am without a valid excuse2 the student will
be sent home for the day.
2Students will be allowed to arrive after 9:30 am only if they can provide one of the following:
• Excuse from your doctor (listing the date and time of appointment)
• Copy of Subpoena, Jury Duty notice, or Court Ordered Appearance documentation

date and time
Students must call before 8:30 am and speak to or leave a message with the front desk at extension 1 if they are
going to be late. Late/no-call students will receive a one day suspension.
No emails, messages, texts, or calls to anyone other than the front desk will be an acceptable notification.
SATURDAY ATTENDANCE
Saturday attendance is mandatory. Students are not allowed to arrive past 8:35 a.m. without a valid excuse2 or
unless approved by the director.
Students arriving late without a valid excuse or approval by the director will be sent home and not allowed to accrue
hours for the day. Any time missed will add to your total absent hours.
Students who are absent or late on Saturday without a valid excuse2 or approval by the director will receive a 1-day
suspension. Students may also be given ISS/your ISS will be at the discretion of your instructor, Examples are work
book projects, or practical projects. This is an attempt at avoiding being sent home and effecting your attendance
%. If attendance issue is not resoled it can still result in being sent home for the day.
MAKE-UP HOURS

during their scheduled time as indicated in the enrollment agreement and must successfully complete all required
hours of training. Students can make up time missed after their scheduled hours of attendance. Students will only
be given credit for make-up time if they are receiving instructor provided training or instructor supervised lab or
clinic exercises. All make-up time must be certified by an instructor or credit will not be awarded. Make-up hours
are available based on the availability of an educator. Students making up hours must be in compliance with the
uniform dress code policy and have signed up for make-up hours with the front desk.

TIME KEEPING GUIDELINES
Jenny Lea Academy of Cosmetology Student Handbook
2018-07-01 29
Jenny Lea Academy is a clock hour institution and therefore clocking in and out is extremely important. The academy
can only issue credit for hours that are properly documented. Students must clock in at the beginning of the day and
when returning from their lunch. Students must also clock out when starting their lunch and at the end of the school
day. Any adjustments to the student’s time clock entries need to be corrected within one week of receiving the
time reports and must be communicated through an instructor to the Admissions Office.
Clock in/out time is rounded to the nearest quarter hour.
TIME CLOCK CORRECTIONS
Should a student forget to clock in or out, the Admissions Office will only make one correction every six months.
This correction will be noted in your student file. Any other missed punches will cause you to lose hours. If you
forget to clock in our out, do so as soon as you remember. Time clock corrections must be verified by an instructor.
LUNCHES
Students are required to sign in/out at the front desk when going on lunch and any other time they leave the building.
After Phase 1, Cosmetology and Aesthetics students will have their lunches scheduled by the Front Desk. Students
are to check the schedule daily for their allotted lunch time.
Cosmetology students receive a 1-hour lunch, and Aesthetics and Nail Tech students receive a 30-minute lunch.
Cosmetology phases 2-4 students are required to take at least a 30-minute lunch. Short lunches must be approved
by an instructor and the front desk must be notified. Cosmetology phase 1 students are required to take a 1-hour
lunch.
If a student does not clock in and out for lunch, the full scheduled amount of time will be deducted for their lunch
break.
ATTENDANCE PERCENTAGE REQUIREMENTS
Students receiving Title IV Financial Aid are required to meet minimum attendance and academic standards per the
Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy (SAP). (see page 24) However, Jenny Lea Academy requires that its students meet
a higher standard for attendance.
While in Phase 1 students are expected to have 100% attendance. Any absence during Phase 1 must be pre-
approved by the Instructor. Un-approved absences may result in disciplinary action or dismissal.
1. The first time a student is absent without pre-approval during Phase 1, the student will receive a written
warning.
2. The second time a student is absent without pre-approval during Phase 1, the student will receive a written
probation notice.
3. The third time a student is absent without pre-approval during Phase 1, the student will be dropped from
Jenny Lea Academy.
The minimum attendance requirement for Phases 2 – 4 is 90% of the scheduled time.
Attendance percentages will be checked on the first of each month when Student Progress Reports are handed out.
1. The first time a student has an attendance percentage below 90%, the student will receive a written
warning.
2. The second time a student has an attendance percentage below 90%, the student will receive a written 30-
day probation notice.

LEAVE OF ABSENCE POLICY
Leaves of Absence can be granted in cases of medical emergency which cause attendance to be impossible or
impractical. Medical reasons, or death. Military Leave. Documentation will be required. A student, who is granted a
Leave of Absence by the school, is not considered to have withdrawn from the school and will not incur any
additional tuition charges during a leave of absence. A Leave of Absence will not affect the student’s maximum time
frame for completion; however, it will affect their scheduled graduation date.
Leaves of absence are at least 7 days, and the combined total of leave days cannot exceed six months (180 calendar
days).
In order to be placed on a Leave of Absence, the student must:
1. Complete the school’s Leave of Absence Request Form and provide any necessary backup documentation
such as a medical excuse from their medical provider. Please note: all medical excuses will be verified for
legitimacy with the medical provider.
2. Be approved by the Admissions Director, Financial Aid Administrator, and Instructor.
3. Must not be on probation for academic or attendance issues.
4. Leaves must be a minimum of 7 days. *
5. There must be at least a period of 30 days between leaves.
Students may not arbitrarily decide to “take” a leave of absence.
A student may apply for a leave of absence on a form obtained from the Financial Aid Office. The LOA request must
include a start and end date and the reason for the leave. There must be a reasonable expectation that a student
will return from a leave of absence. A student may return from a LOA early.
*Students requesting an extension on a leave of absence must come to the school prior to the original LOA end
date to sign a revised LOA form and provide any necessary documentation. A LOA will not be considered extended
until this has been done.
A student who does not return to school on the expiration date of a LOA, or does not contact the school
administration prior to the LOA end date, is considered to have withdrawn from the program.
The last recorded date of attendance will be considered to be the date the student withdrew. For students with
Federal Student Loans, the 6-month grace period will begin on the date the student withdrew.
Hours that have elapsed during a leave of absence will extend the student’s contract period by the same number of
days taken in the leave of absence and will not be included in the student’s cumulative attendance percentage
calculation.
Students must meet with their Instructor to determine what part of the curriculum they will miss while on LOA. The
student is responsible to self-study those chapters and be ready to take the exam when they return from the LOA.
The Instructor will list on the LOA request form which chapters the student must self-study.
Financial Aid disbursements may NOT be made while a student is on a LOA. Recipients of student loans should
note that a leave of absence constitutes a break in their program of study, resulting in loss of their loan repayment
grace period and/or eligibility for student deferment.
For students using the GI-Bill we must let the VA know that you are not attending class, which will stop of all your
VA payments and if you are Chapter 33 we must return all unearned tuition. Upon your return from the LOA we will
inform the VA and they will reactivate your status.
A student on an approved leave of absence will retain his/her status at JLA. A LOA may be refused due to a conflict
of interest with financial aid, a class schedule conflict, or for validity of the LOA reason.

SOCIAL MEDIA POLICY
Jenny Lea Academy of Cosmetology Student Handbook
34 2018-07-01
The goal of this policy is to provide some guidelines on proper social networking etiquette. This policy seeks to
recognize the fact that in certain contexts, social media can extend the bounds of school related activity to include
out of school activities.
The internet is not anonymous, nor does it forget: Everything written on the web can be traced back to its author
one way or another. Information is backed up and posts in one venue are often replicated in others. Use good
judgment about content and respect privacy laws. Every student is personally responsible for the content they
publish on any form of user-generated media. Do not provide misleading, false or confidential information about
the school, Jenny Lea Academy staff, students or customers.
• Do not use social media to subject the employees, students or customers of Jenny Lea Academy to ridicule or
intentional infliction of mental distress.
• You may NOT post content that is threatening, obscene, a violation of intellectual property rights or privacy
laws, or otherwise injurious or illegal. You may not cite or refer to the school, staff, students or customers
without their approval.
• Maintain confidentiality: Be respectful of confidential, proprietary or insider information in regards to Jenny Lea
Academy. This also means that the personal information of the employees, students and customers should not
be shared on or disclosed through social media.
• Be authentic: Identify yourself. This will add credibility to your profile and you personally. If you are not
comfortable posting something under your real name, it is probably something you shouldn’t post. Steer clear
of posting or linking to any materials that are defamatory, harassing or indecent.
• Do not return fire: If a negative post or comment is found online about Jenny Lea Academy, someone you know,
or yourself, do not counter with another negative post. Instead, offer to remedy the situation through positive
action. Be professional in all situations, especially when accepting criticism.
• The last word: Representation of your personal opinions as being endorsed by Jenny Lea Academy, its staff,
clients, or student body in whole or part is strictly prohibited. You may not use Jenny Lea Academy name,
likeness or logo to promote any opinion, product, cause, brand, or candidate.
Students should not befriend Instructors or Staff on social media. Students, Instructors, and

graduates they can join the Jenny Lea Academy Alumni group on Facebook. Any violation of

PRIVACY NOTICE
Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act of 1974
The FERPA is a federal law designed to protect the privacy of a student’s education records.
Jenny Lea Academy of Cosmetology Student Handbook
2018-07-01 37
The law applies to all schools which receive funds under an applicable program from the U.S. Department of
Education.
The FERPA gives certain rights to parents regarding their children’s education records. These rights transfer to the
student or former student who has reached the age of 18 or is attending any school beyond the high school level.
Students and former students to whom the rights have transferred are called eligible students.
Parents or eligible students have the right to request that a school correct records believed to be inaccurate or
misleading. If the school refuses to change the records, the parent or eligible student then has the right to a formal
hearing. After the hearing, if the school still refuses to make the corrections, the parent or eligible student has the
right to place a statement in the records commenting on the contested information in the records.
Generally, the school must have written permission from the parent or eligible student before releasing any
information from a student’s record. However, the law allows schools to disclose records without any consent to the
following parties:
• School employees who have a need-to-know
• Other schools to which a student is transferring
• Parents when a student over 18 is still dependent
• Certain government officials in order to carry out lawful functions
• Appropriate parties in connection with financial aid to a student
• Organizations doing certain studies for the school
• Accrediting organizations
• Individuals who have obtained court orders or subpoenas
• Persons who need to know in cases of health and safety emergencies
• State and local authorities to whom disclosure is required by state law.
Schools may also disclose, without consent, “directory” type information such as student’s name, address, telephone
number, honors and awards, and dates of attendance. However, the school must tell parents and students of the
information that is designated as directory information and provide a reasonable amount of time to allow the parent
or eligible student to request the school not to disclose that information about them. Schools must notify parents
and eligible students of their rights under this law. The actual means of notification is left to each school. If you wish
to see your records, you should contact the administration and a time will be scheduled to allow access to your
records.

supervisor, Executive Director, Human Resources, or preferably the Title IX Coordinator as soon as possible after the
incident. Do not allow an inappropriate situation to continue by not reporting it, regardless of who is creating the
situation. Also, it is important to preserve any evidence that may assist in proving that an alleged criminal offense
occurred or that may be helpful in obtaining a protection order. No employee, contract worker, student, vendor, or
other person who does business with the School is exempt from the prohibitions in this policy. In order to facilitate
the investigation, your complaint should include details of the incident or incidents, names of the individuals involved
and names of any witnesses.
Following an alleged offense, victims will be provided with written information on their rights (Victim’s Rights form)
and options for, and available assistance in, changing academic and working situations. The School will make these
accommodations if the victim requests them and if they are reasonably available, regardless of whether the victim
chooses to report the crime to local law enforcement. Students have the right to request the reasonable academic
accommodations through the Executive Director. Accommodation requests will be handled via the Title IX
Coordinator.
Title IX Coordinator
The Title IX Coordinator has the responsibility of overseeing all Title IX related activities, complaints and
investigations. The Title IX Coordinator, or Deputy Title IX Coordinator, can be reached at:

Investigation of Complaints
In response to all complaints, Jenny Lea Academy promises prompt and equitable resolution through a reliable and
impartial investigation of complaints, including the opportunity for both parties to present witnesses or other
evidence. The time necessary to conduct an investigation will vary based on complexity but will generally be
completed within sixty (60) days of receipt of the complaint. Jenny Lea Academy shall maintain confidentiality for all
parties to the extent possible, but absolute confidentiality cannot be guaranteed. In cases where a student does not
give consent for an investigation, Jenny Lea Academy will weigh the student’s request for confidentiality against the
impact on School safety to determine whether an investigation must proceed. Complainants should be aware that
in a formal investigation due process generally requires that the identity of the charging party and the substance of
the complaint be revealed to the person charged with the alleged harassment.
The preponderance of the evidence standard will apply to investigations, meaning Jenny Lea Academy will evaluate
whether it is more likely than not that the alleged conduct occurred. Both parties will receive written notice of the
outcome of the complaint.
During the investigation, Jenny Lea Academy will provide interim measures, as necessary, to protect the safety and
well-being of students and/or employees involved.
If Jenny Lea Academy determines that unlawful harassment or sexual violence has occurred, immediate appropriate
corrective action will be taken in accordance with the circumstances involved, and Jenny Lea Academy will take steps
to prevent the recurrence of any harassment or discrimination. Any employee determined by Jenny Lea Academy to
be responsible for unlawful harassment or discrimination will be subject to appropriate disciplinary action, up to and
including termination. Remedies for student-related claims may include, but are not limited to, an order to stay
away, suspension, or expulsion.
To initiate a criminal investigation, reports of sexual violence should be made to “911” or local law enforcement.
The criminal process is separate from the School’s disciplinary process. To the extent that an employee or contract
worker is not satisfied with the School’s handling of a harassment or discrimination complaint, he or she may also
contact the appropriate state or federal enforcement agency for legal relief.
Retaliation Prohibited
Jenny Lea Academy will not retaliate against anyone for filing a complaint, and will not tolerate retaliation by
students or employees. If you believe you have been retaliated against, you should promptly notify the Title IX
Coordinator.
Reporting Requirements
Victims of sexual misconduct should be aware that School administrators must issue timely warnings for incidents
reported to them that pose a substantial threat of bodily harm or danger to other members of the campus
community. Jenny Lea Academy will make every effort to ensure that a victim’s name and other identifying
information is not disclosed, while still providing enough information for community members to make safety
decisions in light of the danger. Jenny Lea Academy reserves the right to notify parents/guardians of dependent
students regarding any health or safety risk, or a change in student status.
