ABOUT AMERICAN EXPRESSWe’re a global services company that provides customers with access to products, insights and experiences that enrich lives and build business success.

With us, you get all the space you need to innovate, collaborate and do what you need to do to create amazing customer experiences, every single day. Because life at American Express is about pushing yourself. Pushing our business. Using your ideas to shape who we are today, tomorrow and long into the future. We changed the game back in 1958 when we introduced the Charge Card, but we’re now much more than ‘just a credit card’. Yes, that’s still part of who we are (in fact, in terms of volume, we’re the world’s largest card issuer). But as a progressive

digital services business, we now have a presence in 130 countries and integrations with Airbnb, Android Pay, Apple Pay and Uber, to name a few. What hasn’t changed, though, is our collective determination to define an industry.

Join us as a graduate or intern and expect to work on meaningful projects, with real scope for impact, tackling the kinds of challenges you crave. Prepare to feel inspired – and ready for absolutely anything.

GRADUATE PROGRAMMES

SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAMMES

Challenge yourself. Generate new ideas. Take calculated risks,

and collaborate with experts. Our Graduate Programmes and

Internships aren’t for the faint-hearted (there’s definitely no

coasting here). But show us you have the right kind of drive, and

we’ll give you all the support and business exposure you need to

start developing world-class leadership skills.

Starting in September, our full-time Graduate Programmes help you develop the kind of business expertise that will send your career into orbit. Your programme will last for 12 to 24 months, depending on the business area. And no matter where you join us as a graduate, you’ll be challenged to the full. Expect real responsibility, challenging assignments and proper access to senior management. Think networking, your own buddy and mentoring initiatives. There’s even the potential for further development through professional qualifications.

Our 10-week Summer Internship Programme gives you the opportunity to work on meaningful projects that have a real impact on the success of our teams. You can look forward to a mix of formal training, practical on-the-job experience, networking and mentoring – everything you need to develop both personally and professionally. You’ll collaborate with senior business leaders, and balance the work with plenty of play in the form of social and community events with other interns. Perform well over the summer and you could even bag yourself a place on one of our Graduate Programmes.

WHAT IS MARKETING AND BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT AT AMERICAN EXPRESS?

Our Marketing team members immerse themselves in our customers. They do that so we can more effectively communicate with them across different platforms and channels. This in-depth insight helps us produce the iconic campaigns that make American Express one of the strongest, most recognised brands in the world. And as a global network, this doesn’t happen by accident. Our Marketing team makes sure the brand is always well looked after, nurturing partnerships and engaging with our Card Members at every level. Our Business Development team, including Client Management and Sales provide incredible customer service while combining business expertise with a passion for developing and sustaining new relationships.

WHAT WILL I BE DOING?

We offer 10-week Summer Internships in Marketing and Business Development which can lead to a full-time Graduate Programme offer. As a Marketing or Business Development summer intern you could be doing anything from strategic marketing and campaign development, to sales and key account management. Our interns get the opportunity to work with some of our prestigious partnership brands too.

Want to help us find innovative ways to improve the customer experience, lead end-to-end marketing initiatives or research new business channels? This is the opportunity for you.

ALICE MARKETING SUMMER INTERN

“ The culture at American Express really stuck out for me. I came withpreconceptions of what I thought working in financial services would be like, and honestly, it shattered most of them.

One of my projects during my internship was creating a pan-Bank Partnership newsletter to educate the team on the digital initiatives across EMEA and within the wider industry. This was something that had never been created before, so I was able to design and structure the newsletter with my own personal touch. As I didn’t study a degree in Digital Marketing or Business, I had limited prior experience to the world of marketing or financial services. I was thrilled that my limited experience wasn’t a roadblock. The team were genuinely interested in hearing my point of view and it was exciting to be able to bring a fresh perspective that was valued by all levels of seniority.”

CUSTOMER SERVICE AND BUSINESS STRATEGY

WHAT IS CUSTOMER SERVICE AND BUSINESS STRATEGY AT AMERICAN EXPRESS?

The Global Servicing Network (GSN), and Travel & Lifestyle Services (TLS) are two of our company’s largest divisions. They make up over 50% of the American Express business, with employees in 25 countries all over the world.

GSN delivers extraordinary customer care to Card Members, Corporate Clients and Merchants globally, all while providing world-class fraud protection and driving revenue growth for the company. TLS serves American Express Card Members with a full range of travel and lifestyle support, from trip planning and booking to procuring premium experiences. This can include anything from seats at the chef’s table to planning a wedding ceremony complete with private helicopter tour into the Grand Canyon.

WHAT WILL I BE DOING?

The 10-week Internship with Customer Service and Business Strategy will see you working on one project over the course of your internship. The graduate role will involve working on four rotations across key disciplines within GSN and TLS; Change Management, Strategy and Optimisation, Customer Engagement and Planning.

With each rotation you’ll perform a different role, focusing on your relationship building, consulting, strategic and analytical skills. Opportunities are diverse; you could be working on Employee Motivation, Capabilities Product Management, Process Engineering, Risk Strategy or Customer Experience.

You’ll experience new challenges, build a diverse skillset, and gain real insight into how the largest part of American Express works end-to-end. Your contributions will have a direct impact on how we deliver differentiated servicing, continually engage our valued employees and find new ways of doing business.

STEPHANIELEADERSHIP & ENRICHMENT PROJECT ANALYST - GLOBAL SERVICING LEARNING NETWORK

“One of the key things that attracted me to the American Express Graduate Programme was the ability to complete rotations in a variety of roles across the business. During my time here so far, I’ve worked on the premium card member experience in Travel and Lifestyle Services and also the leadership and development strategy in the Global Servicing Learning Network. Working in these roles has been a great way to help expand my knowledge of the wider business and to build on my network.

One thing I didn’t expect was the personal investment from leadership from day one. In fact, the culture of collaboration and support from the company has been fantastic – I was even able to qualify as a Prince2 practitioner earlier in the year. The opportunity to consistently broaden my skillsets by delivering meaningful projects was there right from the start.”

RISK & INFORMATION MANAGEMENT

WHAT IS RISK & INFORMATION MANAGEMENT AT AMERICAN EXPRESS?

Risk management decisions have a significant impact on the profitability of the business. That’s why we don’t do guesswork. We trust the data, insight, analytics and abilities of the finest risk management team. They make critical decisions every day that impact countless employees, merchants and Card Members. The work is challenging, but always rewarding. From evaluating the credit worthiness of our customers, managing operational risks to anticipating regulatory expectations, it’s a big responsibility, but we know you can handle it. If you have strong problem-solving and analytical skills, the courage to tackle big obstacles and a focus on driving results, then we’re the place to be.

WHAT WILL I BE DOING?

We offer 10-week Summer Internships in Risk & Information Management that can lead to a full-time position when you graduate. The projects you’ll work on add real value to your team, and the insights you provide at the end of the summer will be reviewed and leveraged by senior risk leaders. From consumer to commercial products, you’ll have the opportunity to work directly with cross-market teams. And as a Risk Management intern, you’ll refine and evaluate credit risk strategies at all stages of the customer life cycle, whether it’s product design, prospect onboarding or portfolio management. Your job will be to get up close and personal with the data, performing in-depth analysis and driving meaningful insights out of it. Risk Management covers many different functional areas, including Operations, Marketing and Sales. Which means you’ll be getting a birds-eye view of how we operate as a business.

STEPHANIEMANAGER, RISK & INFORMATION MANAGEMENT

“Although I already had high expectations when I joined American Express as a summer intern in terms of the culture and environment, I was still blown away by the willingness of people both within my area and otherwise during my internship project. This project involved assessing the feasibility of integrating a fintech startup into our existing Risk Management processes, and I could really see how important it was in the culture to be agile. Further adding to my summer here was the quality of interns with which I shared the experience – both from a professional perspective and personal, they really rounded out my experience.

I have now returned full time and found that the nature of the internship really laid some integral foundations for building a career here. We gained perspective and networks within functional areas outside of our own and really got to learn about American Express with a broader lens. I do continue to keep learning every day here – the business is ever evolving and it’s an exciting place to be.”

STRATEGIC PLANNING GROUP (SPG)

WHAT IS THE STRATEGIC PLANNING GROUP AT AMERICAN EXPRESS?

The Strategic Planning Group (SPG) is American Express’s internal consulting division. Our clients are top management who engage us to solve critical business challenges and evaluate growth opportunities. WHAT WILL I BE DOING?

We offer full-time Graduate Analyst roles in SPG. From the start, Analysts are encouraged to fully participate in SPG work by taking on responsibilities in committees within the team. You’ll be owning your own workstreams within projects, and presenting your work to senior stakeholders (up to and including the CEO). You’ll be working with global teams across multiple business areas, on diverse challenges ranging from high-level strategy to specific, implementation-led projects. Expect an intense one-week training session, followed by additional monthly training and a regular speaker series with senior leaders from all over the business.

YASMINASTRATEGIC PLANNING GROUP GRADUATE ANALYST

“I had heard a lot about the culture at American Express before I joined, but I didn’t realise just how extensive this would be. Colleagues in and outside your team will always make time to help you not only with business-related questions but also with career-related ones. Employee networks in particular are strong levers to find highly supportive mentors.

Working in the Strategic Planning Group has offered me the opportunity to work on critical strategic projects mandated by senior leaders from across the organisation. This has allowed me to gain a sound understanding of American Express’s business model and organisational structure, along with learning about the payments industry. In addition, American Express really values personal development and I have been impressed by the amount of training offered (both formal and informal) along with the strong support I received from my team. This ultimately helped me to come up the curve to reach the required high level of thinking.”

FRASERTECHNOLOGY GRADUATE ANALYST

“ I wasn’t sure what to expect joining a big organisation but people here aregenuinely happy to give up their time to help you out with a problem or answer any questions you might have. One of the training programmes we took part in was to develop a prototype based on a brief that was deliberately vague so that we’d come up with a number of unusual ideas. As a team, we managed to take one of our more challenging ideas forward and design a prototype. When we presented back, people were genuinely surprised and impressed with our creativity.

There has been a lot to learn since joining American Express, but that was what excited me about working here in the first place. The company offers the opportunity to do pretty much all the training you want – and particularly to graduates.”

We support risk taking and innovation, and we have a collaborative and goal-driven atmosphere. We’ll support you in all your crazy, creative ideas, so long as you can convince us it’s worth the risk. Throughout the year American Express employees are actively encouraged to participate in a diverse range of company sponsored volunteer events through our partnerships with organisations such as Hands On London and Albion in the Community in Brighton.
