What’s an opera without a great heroine? In 2017, New Zealand

Opera has got it covered. From the woman who won’t be tamed, to

the trapped wife longing for freedom,to the ingénue who sits and

wonders in her “artless, Japanese way” why she is so much

more attractive than anybody else in the whole world. The three

works that chronicle the stories of these women couldn’t be more

different, but what they have in common is that they’re complete

masterpieces. I’m delighted to present them as our 2017 mainstage

season, continuing our mission to bring more opera to more New

Zealanders than ever before.

Carmen is possibly the most famous opera of all time, and its

melodies have proliferated popular culture from Gilligan’s Island

to The Muppets. However, this production by Lindy Hume is more

than castanets and clichés, creating a world that’s gritty, sexy and

dangerous.

As the young Kátya Kabanová struggles with an inattentive husband,

a hideously manipulative mother-in-law, and the most conservative of

societies, she buckles under the conflict between who she should be

and who she is. In our new production shared with Seattle Opera,

this breathtaking work is sure to be as devastating as it is beautiful.

At the other end of the scale, but no less a work of genius, we have

The Mikado. A joyous cast, performing in the brand spanking new

ASB Waterfront Theatre will lead us in this glorious romp through

Gilbert & Sullivan’s most celebrated tunes and characters.

One of the great joys of being a national company is the many

opportunities we have to collaborate with New Zealand’s great

orchestras. As well as working with the Auckland Philharmonia

Orchestra, Orchestra Wellington, Christchurch Symphony Orchestra

and New Zealand Symphony Orchestra throughout our mainstage

programmes, in 2017 we’re particularly excited to be partnering

with the APO for Manon Lescaut and Magic of the Musicals and

the NZSO for The Damnation of Faust. We are also delighted to be

collaborating with the Auckland Arts Festival to present The Bone

Feeder by Gareth Farr, a new New Zealand work firmly rooted in

the Chinese, Maori and European early settler experience.

So enjoy and we’ll see you at the opera.

Stuart Maunder,

General Director

The Mikado is without doubt Gilbert & Sullivan’s most famous

comic opera. While set in the imaginary Japanese town of Titipu,

the satire is directed fairly and squarely at the British and their love

of bureaucracy.

This stunning production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic

masterpiece transports us to modern-day Japan, where Harajuku

fashion, mobile phones and Hello Kitty rule. Filled with vibrant

colour, sharp blades, even sharper wits and an excellent cast of

New Zealand and Australian singers, The Mikado was hailed as

“laugh out loud stuff” which “fizzes with charm” by reviewers of

the Australian season.

Audio described performances

An enduringly popular opera, Carmen is a parade of hit tunes set

in an exotic locale with a fearless heroine. Vital and dangerous,

Carmen will be free at any cost, setting the path to the opera’s

gripping conclusion.

This production by Lindy Hume – well known here for her brilliantly

theatrical productions of Lucia di Lammermoor, Rigoletto and La

cenerentola – is sexy and sensual with all the things you would

expect from Bizet’s ravishing opera.

A brilliant showcase of singing actors, orchestral colour and

heartbreaking emotions, this powerfully emotional tragedy weaves

a dreamlike, visceral story of isolation and oppression. Conducted

by Director of Music, Wyn Davies, it is directed by Patrick Nolan,

whose past New Zealand Opera productions include the

unforgettable Eugene Onegin and La bohème.

Kátya is caught in a loveless marriage where she is dominated

by an overbearing mother-in-law. She discovers true love with

another man, but ultimately is unable to find happiness or peace.

In this contemporary reimagining of the story, Kátya’s plight is

understandable, hopeless and all too frequently echoed in

modern society.

Manon Lescaut is too young to really know who she is. What she does know is that she’s beautiful. Heart-stoppingly beautiful. What she learns later is that her charms are a commodity that can be bought and sold like any other.

The young student Des Grieux is overtaken by love the moment he sees her, and indeed, Manon falls in love with him. But Manon loves other things too – attention, revelry, wealth.

Puccini’s breakthrough opera was a smash hit from its premiere. Featuring Italian stars Serena Farnocchia and Massimo Giordano and the APO luxuriating in Puccini’s sumptuous orchestral music, Manon Lescaut will be unforgettable.

New Zealand Opera subscribers will receive a code to access APO concession prices with their 2017 subscription pack.

The Bone Feeder is a new opera, beautifully andimaginatively scored by Gareth Farr and writtenby poet and playwright Renee Liang, that exploresthe mysteries, traumas and gifts of migration, home and belonging.

A young New Zealand Chinese man searching forhis roots is guided by a magical cicada and MaoriFerryman. He crosses to 'the other side', whereghosts reveal secrets of love, loss and betrayal. His attempt to uncover his ancestor's bonesdisturbs the earth and ultimately, threatens hislife.

Directed by Sara Brodie, the opera takes GarethFarr’s unique combination of Western, Maori andChinese instruments to create a sweeping, beautiful and playful piece of music sung inEnglish, Maori and Cantonese.

The Bone Feeder is inspired by the story of the SS Ventnor, a lost part ofNZ's history. It’s grounded in the experiences of early Chinese settlers andtheir interactions with Pakeha and Maori.

Glamour, romance, heartbreak and humour, all set to a tune. Seriously, how can you not love a musical?

From the wit of Chicago to the enduring beauty of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s South Pacifi c, Teddy Tahu Rhodes and Taryn Fiebig join us in a celebration of all that makes musical theatre so glorious.

Two lauded and versatile singers, Taryn and Teddy are both making very welcome returns to the APO, this time combining their stunning voices with the full force of the orchestra and the Freemasons New Zealand Opera Chorus.

With full symphonic arrangements of songs from some of the most loved shows from Broadway and the West End don’t miss what will certainly be some enchanted evening.

Hector Berlioz’s fantastical metaphysical drama La Damnation de Faust is neither opera, nor oratorio, nor song cycle nor symphony. Instead it thrives in the theatre of the imagination, creating a magical world of dancing sylphs and demonic devils in technicolour musical detail.

British tenor Andrew Staples’ recent performance in the title role was described as ‘an absolute revelation’. Undoubtedly one of the greatest bass-baritones in the world, the award winning Eric Owens will perform the intoxicatingly demonic role of Méphistophélès. They will be joined by a mezzo-soprano of international renown to portray the tragic Marguerite.

With the beautifully resonant bass of James Clayton as Brander and the acclaimed Freemasons New Zealand Opera Chorus, this extraordinary, once-in-a-lifetime event must not be missed.

This year, we’ve made it easier for you to build your own

subscription package. Simply put, the more operas you choose to

attend, the more money you save!

If you come to two seasons (The Mikado and Carmen, for example)

you’ll save 15% on the single ticket price. And if you come to all

three seasons, you’ll save 20% on the single ticket price.

Got family members under the age of 18? Subscribers can bring

them along for just $20 — a great way to get your children,

grandchildren, nieces and nephews excited about opera. We’ve

also cut our booking fee (this covers all charges and processing

fees) to a flat $5.

But that’s not all. New Zealand Opera subscribers can also access

discounted tickets to our co-presentations of Manon Lescaut and

Magic of the Musicals with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra,

The Damnation of Faust with the New Zealand Symphony

Orchestra and The Bone Feeder with the Auckland Arts Festival.

It couldn’t be easier to subscribe. Fill in the form in this brochure,

FAQ

What is a subscription? When you book a subscription you choose tickets 2 or 3 different operas from our 2017 season and receive significant savings over single ticket prices.

When do bookings open for the 2017 opera season? Subscription bookings open on October 19 2016 and are only available through the New Zealand Opera Box Office and online. Subscription bookings close after the last performance of Carmen in July 2017.

When are single tickets available for the 2017 season? Single tickets go on sale through Ticketmaster (Auckland) and Ticketek (Christchurch and Wellington) on November 1 2016.

Do you offer concessions for senior citizens and students?

Absolutely; we offer savings on single tickets for senior citizens and students at all ofour performances and across all of our price reserves. For the first time this year, we’reoffering a subscription package for full time students ($60 for two operas; $90 for three operas). These can be purchased in person at the NZO Box Office upon presentation of Student ID, by calling 0800 696 737, or emailing [email protected].

Are there facilities at your venues for those with mobility issues?

Yes. All our main stage venues have mobility access and wheelchair facilities. Please notethat the Opera House in Wellington doesn’t have a lift to the higher floors.

Are there facilities for patrons who are hard of hearing?

With the exception of Wellington’s Opera House, all of our main stage venues havehearing loop facilities. We also have audio described performances of Carmen on June 6,June 27 and July 18, call the NZO Box Office for more information.

Do your performances always start on time?

Yes. Out of respect for our audience members and artists, we implement a strict lock-out policy once the performance has begun. Latecomers are admitted during a suitable break in the performance.
