All three divisions involve the con-testant assuming the position of the machinery dealer, meaning they must execute good salesmanship skills, and have knowledge of the machinery and some of the basic principles of its operation . The machinery will be provided for each contestant . Points will be used in the overall freshman and upperclassmen awards .

It will consist of the following groups: Grain seed and weed seed judging, Weed Plants, Forage Seeds and Forage Plants . Seed quality judging will consist of four crop classes, with each containing four samples to be placed according to seed quality . The four classes will be chosen from the following possible categories: Hard Red Spring Wheat, Hard Red Winter Wheat, Durum Wheat, Oats, Barley, Flax, Rye, Alfalfa, Sweet Clover, Grain Sorghum (Milo) and Soybeans . There will be a 25 question agronomy knowledge exam as well .

SEED AND FORAGE CROP SHOWLocation: Agricultural Hall 242 . 1 . All entries must be prepared for the show by the individual entering the samples . However, samples

need not be grown by the contestant . 2 . All entries must have been grown in the previous year . 3 . Each individual is allowed only one entry in each class . For example, a contestant may enter a sample

of yellow oats and a sample of white oats, but not two samples of yellow oats . 4 . Make sure all samples are the correct quantity . See the class requirements . Soybeans, seed corn, wheat,

oats, barley and rye samples must have the variety name or number identified . Samples of insufficient quantities of unlabeled samples will be disqualified.

5 . Inoculated seed may be shown, treated seed (i .e . fungicide, insecticide) cannot be entered . 6 . All hay samples must be machine baled . For hay samples from big round bales, a 30-gallon trash bag

full of hay will be enough . Small bales (12″✕12″✕ 36″ or similar sized) must be submitted in whole .

7 . Silage samples should be representative (2-3 quarts) and fresh from the silo . Place sample in a plastic Ziplock bag or similar transparent container . Keep samples cold or frozen until entry date .

8 . Samples will be placed by several judges from SDSU’s Plant Science Department . 9 . Roundup Ready soybeans will be allowed and judged with the other soybeans10 . Safflower will be allowed under the Oil Crops category . 11 . A new category will be created: “Large-seeded Legumes .” One quart of each sample is required . This

includes: fieldbeans, fieldpeas, chickpeas, and others . 12 . Points will be used in the overall freshman and upperclassman awards .

Also in the contest, there will be fifty questions multiple choice general knowledge test, identification of plants, landscape tools and possible diseases . A practice section with the basic landscape problems to be worked out (calculators may be used) .

Bethany DeBoer 712-631-9626 bethany .deboer@jacks .sdstate .eduContest Location: Horticulture Forestry Building 107There are three parts to the contest—general knowledge test, plant ID, and flower judging .The general knowledge test is a 50 question test regarding plant growing structures, insects, retail florist industry, greenhouse equipment, plant nutrients, growing media, plant science, propagation, and the greenhouse industry . Anything in these categories is fair game, so contestants should be well rounded in their knowledge of the floriculture industry . The contestants will have one hour to take the test . The plant ID section will consist of 40 specimens . The plants will be cut flowers, potted green plants, pot-ted blooming plants, and annual plants . The list that is used is the same list for the South Dakota State FFA Floriculture CDE and is enclosed with this letter . Each contestant will have 30 seconds to identify the specimen during the contest . Four classes of four samples each are to be ranked one (top of class) through four (worst of class) based on quality and condition . Contestants will receive score cards for each class on the day of the contest . Three minutes will be allowed for each class with a thirty second warning before the end of the three minutes .The specimens for each class will be chosen from this list:Potted Plants: African violets, azalea, chrysanthemum, cineraria, cyclamen, Easter lily, exacum, various foliage plants, geranium, gloxinia, hydrangea, kalanchoe, daffodils, poinsettia, primula, begonia, tulips.Cut Flowers: Alstromeria, carnation (standard or minature), chrysanthemum (including standards, disbuds, or sprays), freesia, gerbera daisy, gladiolus, iris, daffodil, roses (standard or miniature), snapdragon, stock, tulips.Other potted plants or cut flowers with approval of the Committee .Contestants must bring their own pencils and a hard surface to write on . Little I staff will provide score cards and answer sheets .

Practice runs will not be allowed, however, each team must participate in a consultation meeting with Plant Manager, John Haberkorn, at least 7 days prior to ice cream production date . The team does not have to bring the ingredients to this meeting, however, they must have flavor ideas written down to discuss . Teams will need to sign up for a production date two weeks in advance . Production dates will only be available on Fridays with the last possible date being March 17th . All ice cream produced MUST pass the Davis Dairy Plant’s Positive Release Program (PRP) requirements to be eligible to compete . Failure to meet the requirements of the PRP will result in disqualification from the contest . All team members must sign and be in compliance of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and wear proper plant attire . A panel of three judges will judge the ice cream, and the remaining ice cream will be auctioned off on Saturday night of Little I . Points awarded will be used in the high point club award and will be divided evenly amongst the three teammates for the overall freshman and upperclassman awards .If you are interested in competing this year, please send an email to katelyn .johnson@jacks .sdstate .edu by March 1st . GENERAL RULES 1 . For experienced contestants only…only an exhibitor may work with his or her animal . You

may receive verbal help but no one else can touch the animal . 2 . All exhibitors must clean up after themselves . 3 . Any exhibitor who has won a species is not eligible to show in that species again . 4 . An exhibitor who has already won the round robin is still eligible to show but not in the spe-

cies in which they won in the past and is not eligible for the round robin . 5 . Anyone is eligible to compete in all contests with the exceptions to all specific divisions in

which the top award has been previously won by that individual and anyone who has won the Grand Champion Showmanship Round Robin Award .

6 . All exhibitors are required to show up for dry run . 7 . Novice will be allotted 1⁄2 points towards high point upperclassman and underclassman awards . 8 . The champion and reserve champion in all novice events will exhibit in the senior division

to be eligible for round robin . 9 . Novice points will be dropped if the exhibitor receives more points in the senior competition . 10 . Novice exhibitors will follow the species rules in which they are competing . 11 . Drawing for individual species will be done during species drawings . 12 . All drawings will be done by species superintendent and livestock coordinator . 13 . Dairy and Beef competitors must have their animal in the practice trailer ride on Monday,

March 27, at 5:30 p .m . and Thursday, March 30 at 5:30 p .m . 14 . If an exhibitor has won either fitting or showmanship in a particular species, they may still

compete in the other contest for that specie, but they need to notify the Superintendent that they will only be competing in one of the contests .

15 . All exhibitors must wear black pants, white shirt, and a black tie .

The Range Plant Identification CDE will consist of a minimum of fifty (50) plant mounts . B . There may be more than one mount of an individual species in the CDE . C . All plants used in this CDE are from the Master Plant List . D . Participants will have one minute per plant for a total of fifty (50) minutes . E . Three (3) minutes at the end of the CDE will be allowed for students to make changes to their scorecards . F . Under no circumstances will a participant be allowed to go back and look at a plant or plants a second time . G . Participants can move through the CDE faster than this if they prefer . H . Participants will not be allowed to handle the plant mounts; however, a hand magnifier with or without a battery-operated light may be used to assist in identification . I . Participants may use a clean clipboard . VI . Scoring A . Scoring will be as follows: 1 . For each plant, the contestants need to know: i . Common Name = 4 points ii . Life Span = 1 point iii . Season of Growth = 1 point iv . Origin = 1 point (invader would count as all or nothing with native or introduced) v . Grouse Food = 1 point vi . Grouse Cover = 1 point vii . Beef Food = 1 point 1 . Therefore, the maximum total per plant is ten (10) points . 2 . If the common name is incorrect, no points can be earned on the characteristics . A score of zero would result for that plant .

Each team will be given 10 pounds of product and a basic SDSU Meat Lab Smoked Sausage recipe . Teams cannot use their own meat, only meat from the SDSU Meat Lab . Along with the final product, a recipe also needs to be included . A panel of three judges will judge the sausages and the sausages will be auctioned off on Saturday night of Little I . If teams choose to have a practice run before making the sausage they can come in March 16-17 from 9am-4pm to practice and March 20th from 9am-4pm to make their final product . If you feel your team does not need to practice, you can use the 19th to make your final product . If you are interested in competing this year, send an email to ethan .groos@jacks .sdstate .edu with the name of your club, the name of your team members, and put Little I Meats Product as your subject, by March 14th at the absolute latest . Points awarded will be used in the high point club award and will be divided evenly amongst the 3 teammates for the overall freshman and upperclassman awards .

GENERAL RULES 1 . All participants in Little “I” will be required to pay a $25 deposit (the night of the drawing,

Feb . 6) to insure you will show your animal on March 31 and April 1 . If you show your calf, your $25 will be returned to you on April 2 after stalls have been cleaned after the show . (See rule #8) If you drop before Feb . 27, you must contact the superintendent and your $25 will be returned to you . If you drop after this date, your $25 will be forfeited .

2 . Cattle will be available to be worked on Feb . 27 . 3 . Anyone is eligible to compete in all contests with exceptions to all specific divisions in which

the top award has been previously won by that individual and anyone who has won the Grand Champion Showmanship Round Robin Award .

4 . If a contestant is assisted in the fitting of their animal, the contestant and the helper will both be expelled from all parts of the beef show .

a . Novice competitors can receive physical help for the first week only, ending on Sunday, March 16 . b . Novice competitors have the option of clipping their heifer themselves or having the Beef

Superintendent and Assistant do it for them . 5 . No drugs or medications will be administered to any animal . The use of any tranquilizer is

forbidden . 6 . Beef Unit personnel will be the only ones feeding the cattle . Cattle cannot be worked on dur-

ing the feeding hours . 8:00-9:30 a.m. 7 . Contestants are responsible for cleaning stalls on a daily basis and bedding them when needed .

All contestants are responsible for cleaning their stalls and removing all grooming products after the show or their $25 will be forfeited .

8 . Due to previous problems of misplaced light bulbs and other University property, there will be an automatic forfeit of the $25 from all contestants if any problems arise .

9 . All bulls must be shown with a noselead . 10 . Colored powders, paints, creams, or dye may be used on the flank and below of the bull or

heifer . The use of artificial hair or other materials for building legs or tailheads is strictly prohibited . Violators of any of these rules will be disqualified .

11 . The Beef Unit is offering Little “I” a service . You must clean up after yourself . a . Clean your own stall .

b . Keep alleys swept and dry . c . Keep wash rack clean . d . Turn off lights when you are the last to leave . e . Shut doors and gates .

12 . All drops should be reported to the superintendent and absolutely no adds or reassignments of animals will be done without permission of superintendents .

13 . Under NO circumstances are cattle to be tied to any motorized vehicle or other animals . The use of electric prods is prohibited .

14 . Other rules and announcements will be posted on the wash rack door . 15 . . Please return ALL equipment, special feed pans, pails, brooms, blowers and clippers to their designated areas . 16 . All entrants must wear black pants, a white shirt, and a black tie . 17 . Novice competitors will only be allowed to draw and show heifers . 18 . GENERAL RULES 1 . Cattle will be available to be worked on March 13 . 2 . Heifer numbers will be assigned by random drawing by superintendents . 3 . A list of all heifer numbers and contestants names will be posted on the west wing sliding

door along with the pen in which they can be found . It is very important that you put your heifer back into the pen from which she came when you are done working .

4 . Make sure your heifer is dry before putting her back outside . 5 . Dropping and switching of animals must first be approved with superintendents by March 14 . 6 . All participants in Little “I” will be required to pay a $25 deposit (the night of the drawing,

Feb . 10) to insure you will show your animal on March 31 and April 1 . If you show your calf, your $25 will be returned to you on April 2 after stalls have been cleaned after the show . (See rule #9) If you drop before February 27, you must contact the superintendent and your $25 will be returned to you . If you drop after this date, your $25 will be forfeited .

7 . All equipment needed to wash, clip, and show animals must be supplied by the contestants . 8 . Clean up area after working animal . 9 . Contestants cannot work on their animals during the Dairy Unit’s milking times: 6:00-8:00 a .m .,

and 5:00-7:00 p .m . 10 . Contestants are responsible for cleaning stalls on a daily basis and bedding them when needed .

All contestants are responsible for cleaning their stalls and removing all grooming products after the show or their $25 will be forfeited .

11 . All contestants must wear black pants, a white shirt, and a black tie . 12 . Under NO circumstances may cattle be tied to any motorized vehicle or other animals . The

use of electric prods is prohibited . 13 . No drugs or medications will be administered to any animal . The use of any tranquilizer is

forbidden . 14 . All cattle must be properly washed after show . 15 . Anyone is eligible to compete in all contests with exceptions to all specific divisions in which

the top award has been previously won by that individual and anyone who has won the Grand Champion Showmanship Round Robin Award .

GENERAL RULES 1 . There will be a swine information meeting at the Animal Science Arena Tuesday, February 28,

at 7:30 p .m . All participants are required to attend . If you cannot attend this meeting, you must contact the superintendent or assistant superintendent before the day of the meeting or forfeit your animal . All the participants in Little “I” will be required to pay a $25 deposit (the night of the drawing, Feb . 8) to insure that you will show your animal on March 31 and April 1 . If you show your hog, your $25 will be returned to you by the superintendent at clean up on April 2 . If you drop before March 13 at 5:00 p .m . for a refund, you must contact the superintendent and your $25 will be returned to you . If you drop after this date, your $25 will be forfeited .

2 . All swine will be available to be worked on Monday after 10:00 a .m ., March 13 at the livestock arena . 3 . All swine must be worked with by 5:00 p .m ., Wednesday, March 15 . A sign up sheet will be

posted and must be signed by March 15 by all people planning to show and only after working their pig . If sheet is not signed, that person’s pig will be reassigned to another participant .

4 . Anyone is eligible to compete in all contests with exceptions to all specific divisions in which the top award has been previously won by that individual and anyone who has won the Grand Champion Showmanship Round Robin Award .

5 . All entrants shall wear black pants, a white shirt and a black tie . 6 . All are responsible for providing their own show equipment . 7 . All feeding and watering of pigs and cleaning of pens will be done by the superintendents . 8 . No work will be allowed on the swine between 7:00 and 8:30 a .m . and 4:00 and 5:00 p .m . while they

are being fed and pens cleaned; which will be strictly enforced only exceptoin is show week . 9 . Alleys, washpans, and arena must be cleaned after working with your swine or $25 deposit

will be forfeited . Additionally, all gates must get latched or you will forfeit your $25 . 10 . The judges’ preferences on fitting will be posted on the north wall by the swine pens in the

livestock arena .

PREPARATION OF SHOW ANIMAL 1 . Make sure animal is as clean as possible around hooves, underline, eyes, ears, etc . (Judges

have checked inside ears . Use a damp cloth in the ears to prevent getting water in ears .) 2 . Use show oil or powder at your own discretion, keeping the judge’s preferences in mind . 3 . Do not use excessive oil as it overheats the pig . 4 . Animals must be washed after any application of show oil or powder . 5 . Hogs must be clipped by March 29 at 5:00 p .m .

full time . A sign-in sheet will be posted to record exercise and water . 8 . If you choose to blanket, only one blanket is allowed (no hoods) . Slinkys and mane tamers

are acceptable . 9 . Equipment needs: participants will need to provide their own grooming and fitting supplies .

No cattle adhesives or colorings are allowed . A nylon daily use halter will be provided to all participants.

10 . All entrants must wear black pants, white shirt, and a tie . 11 . Unit Supervisor will take care of trimming hooves and ears. Do not attempt yourself!

TIE: 1) The award will be given to the person who competed in the most contests . 2) The award will be given to the person who placed highest in the showmanship contest .

Note: Competitors will be allowed to know what their total score is, if they ask for the information . No scores for other competitors will be given out and spreads between competitors will be kept confidential .

94th Little InternationalHigh Point Club Award

Rules and Regulations

What is it? The High Point Club Award is in its sixth year . It is a competition for organizations

in the Ag/Bio College of South Dakota State University . Clubs will arrange teams to compete in contests in Little ‘I’ and gain points toward the High Point Club title .

Contests: Wool Judging 3 individuals compete in this contest

Machinery Sales 3 individuals compete in this contest

Agronomy 3 individuals compete in this contest

Meat Products 3 people to compete on a team in this contest

Dairy Products 3 people to compete on a team in this contest

Club Booth Club comes up with a booth to go with Little International theme

Club Basket Club donates a basket for the silent auction to promote both their club and Little International

Lamb Lead Club shows one lamb to promote both their club and Little I

Rules: 1 . Students can NOT judge on a team for their club if they are a superintendent

or assistant of one of the above contests .

2 . Students can NOT judge a contest if they were/are a member of that collegiate judging team .

3 . Contest rules are the same for the collegiate members as the high school contests .

4 . Individuals must choose one club to represent .

5 . A tie will be broken on the percentage of members participaing in the showmanship/fitting contests .

6 . Clubs do not need to participate in every contest, however it is recommended for maximum points .
