The UK’s largest free walking festival has been going now for 14 years! It has put Pendle firmly on the map as a fantastic place to walk and enjoy some of the most stunning views in the north of England.

Something has been going over twice as long though... the Pendle Way, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. You can get a tantalising glimpse of some of the breathtaking views along The Pendle Way thanks to a new short video on our website visitpendle.com A number of walks in this programme are marking The Way’s special year by using small parts of its incredibly varied 45 mile route. And our main challenge walk this year is... you’ve guessed... The Pendle Way! Complete the challenge and we’ll reward your efforts with our now famous Certificates of Achievement!

Another anniversary being marked by a number of walks is the birth of radical mathematician Sir Jonas Moore in Pendle 400 years ago. Affectionately known as ‘the Father of Time’, he was responsible, with, other influential people of his day, for setting up the Greenwich Observatory which gave the world its time – Greenwich Mean Time. Pendle is a unique area which makes walking here so special. Literary and historical connections abound and gorgeous views open up around every corner. A number of our walks feature the paths around Wycoller, including the Brontë and Ferndean Ways. These follow in the footsteps of the great literary giants, the Brontë sisters. Our 200 year old Leeds and Liverpool Canal is the longest in the country with a fascinating history and its most picturesque stretches here in Pendle. Our churchyards, farms, and byways still burn with the

fascinating true stories of the Pendle Witches, who featured in the country’s largest witchcraft trial over 400 years ago. Their story is told on a number of walks, most notably on the atmospheric Pendle Sculpture Trail, which features twice in the programme. We’ve plenty of walks that will appeal to people of all ages from short, easy walks to walks which are more active, and everything in between. We’ve walks that visit the last Clarion House in the UK and rambles which uncover stories of murders and ghostly horsemen. We also have a number of walks which take you up Pendle’s three peaks - Boulsworth Weets and the classic climb up legendary Pendle hill, which inspired the founder of the Quakers, George Fox in 1652. We’ve such variety – take a look through our programme and pick your favourites!

Family Friendly The Pendle Walking Festival is in the school summer holidays and we’ve a number of family friendly walks to enjoy which are marked out by the badger symbol in the guide.

The Festival LaunchThe festival will be launched at Lakeside Café, Ball Grove Park, at 10am on Saturday 12th August followed by a number of walks. It will be launched by The Mayor of Pendle, Councillor David Whalley.
