A PATHWAY TO UNIVERSITYTAFE SA offers more than 50 University Pathway programs which provide you with guaranteed entry to a degree at a South Australian university. On completion of your TAFE SA qualification, generous credit arrangements mean that you can start your degree in the second or third year, so you will finish your degree sooner. With a University Pathway program you will gain a career‑competitive mix of practical, professional skills and theoretical knowledge.

Many of TAFE SA’s qualifications can be used to apply for university entry at universities in Australia. Qualifications at a certificate IV, diploma, advanced diploma and associate degree level can also be used as credit towards your university degree.

How does credit transfer work?

TAFE SA has formal credit transfer agreements with South Australian universities, which gives you automatic status or credit in some part of a course or program. This means you can complete your university qualification more quickly and cheaply.

A diploma from TAFE SA usually provides up to a year of credit towards university study. An advanced diploma usually counts for a year and a half, and an associate degree up to two years. There are no fees to apply for recognition through credit transfer.*

*Application fees may be charged by your chosen education provider.

REAL-WORLD SKILLS FOR PRACTICAL CAREERSAt TAFE SA, you will develop the skills employers want. We have strong relationships with business and industry, ensuring our courses are relevant and up‑to‑date.

Our lecturers are all highly experienced, and they are active in their fields of expertise. Our teaching methods blend theory with hands‑on, practical learning using industry‑standard facilities and technology, so when you complete your course, you are job‑ready.

Many of our courses include industry work placements as part of the course program. These work placements give you first‑hand experience of the workplace, allowing you to test your skills and make valuable industry contacts.

At TAFE SA, our lecturers are accessible and supportive, and our classes are mostly between 15 and 20 students. These small class sizes mean more personal assistance and attention, and a more rewarding studyexperience.

TAFE SA gives you choice and flexibility. You can choose from more than 100 courses, and follow pathways within our own areas of study, as well as to university. It is your practical pathway to the career you want.

WHY CHOOSE TAFE SA?

SAVE ON YOUR DEGREEStudying at TAFE SA is a smart choice that can save you money. Our tuition fees are very competitive. Your TAFE SA qualification also provides credit towards your university degree, so you can complete your degree in less time and save money.

The indicative cost for a TAFE SA diploma or advanced diploma course is $12,000 per year. At a South Australian university, the cost is more like $30,000 per year. This means that every year of credit you receive for your TAFE SA qualification means a saving of around $18,000.

A COMPETITIVE EDGEStudying at TAFE SA gives you practical experience and new skills, whatever your career goals. Even if you already have a university degree or years of work experience, learning practical skills and gaining an understanding of the most recent advances in your field gives you a competitive edge in the job market. Qualifications from TAFE SA are recognised throughout Australia and in many other countries.

YOUR LEARNING AND EXPERIENCE IS VALUEDAt TAFE SA, we know that knowledge and skills are built up in many ways. Experience in a job or as a volunteer, previous study and training, and self‑taught abilities are all important and valuable. If you can provide evidence of relevant skills or knowledge, you might be able to gain recognition for part of, or even an entire TAFE SA course. This is called Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). Evidence for RPL can include certification, references from employers, testimonials from clients, and samples of your work. Fees apply.

Each year, students from more than 70 nations choose to study at TAFE SA. You could be one of them.

EASY TO GET AROUNDAdelaide’s design is based on a square grid layout surrounded by green parkland, so it is easy and pleasant to find your way around. The flat terrain makes walking and cycling easy, and you can drive if you have an international driver’s licence. A public transport system of buses, trains and trams covers the city and suburbs – there is even a free ‘city loop’ bus and tram around the city centre. All international students can get cheaper tickets – just show your student ID card.

ACCOMMODATION TYPESStudent housing

Student housing in Adelaide includes individual studio apartments, shared apartments, or dormitory accommodation. Most student housing is in the city centre, or near TAFE SA campuses, which reduces transport costs. One advantage of student accommodation is that it often includes internet access, utilities, furnished apartments, and sometimes other services such as meals and laundry.

One example of affordable student housing is Regency International House at TAFE SA’s Regency Campus. The rental fee includes meals, utilities, weekly cleaning, and access to shared recreation facilities. See tafesa.edu.au/international/int‑support‑services/int‑accommodation for more information.

Homestay

Homestay is living with an Australian host family. It is a great way to experience Australian life and practice your English in a welcoming environment. As a homestay student, you will have a bedroom with linen and a place to study, and you will share a bathroom, kitchen and other facilities with your host family. Most homestay hosts provide meals, or you may need to provide and prepare your own food.

Your homestay hosts may be a family with children, a couple, or a single person. Many Australian homes have pets, including dogs. You will be part of the household, so you will have to look after your own needs, such as keeping your room tidy and doing your laundry.

Visit homestaynetwork.org, studentliving.com.au or unilodge.com.au/Adelaide for more information.

Private rental

You can rent a house or apartment anywhere you like. On top of your weekly rent you will need to pay for utilities such as electricity, gas, water and telephone. You may need to sign a lease agreement with your landlord and pay a refundable bond in advance. Go to cbs.sa.gov.au/renting‑and‑letting/ for more information about your legal rights and obligations as a tenant.

Students often share a house, having a bedroom each, sharing the rest of the house and splitting expenses. If you rent a room in a share house, you might pay more if the room is furnished, or if utilities are included in your weekly rent. Sharing can be a cheap option, but it is important to clearly agree on how chores and bills will be divided.

You can search realestate.com.au or domain.com.au to find properties for rent.

ACCOMMODATIONWhere to live is an important decision when you move to a new city. For most people, rental and transport costs are important, along with finding somewhere close to your campus, workplace and other facilities. Most TAFE SA international students choose between purpose-built student housing, homestay and private rental.

CREDIT TRANSFERCredit transfer means that your TAFE SA studies are recognised as being equivalent in content and level to parts of other education programs, including university degrees. Successful completion of your TAFE SA certificate IV, diploma, advanced diploma or associate degree can provide you with entry to or credit toward your degree at an Australian university.

TAFE SA has agreements with the three South Australian and some Australian universities to provide clear pathways and generous credit for connected degree programs.

A diploma from TAFE SA usually provides up to a year of credit towards university study. An advanced diploma usually counts for a year and a half, and an associate degree up to two years.

Check the TAFE SA website to find credit transfer connected to your course.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A UNIVERSITY PATHWAY PROGRAM AND A CREDIT TRANSFER PATHWAY?A University Pathway program provides you with:

> a joint offer from both TAFE SA and the university

> guaranteed entry to university on successful completion of your TAFE SA qualification

> a single visa for the duration of the whole study program

> application is made to TAFE SA (except when applying to the University of Adelaide)

A Credit Transfer program provides you with:

> credit from your TAFE SA qualification into the connected university program, which may reduce study load and duration

> Application must be made directly to the university on completion of your TAFE SA study
