2017 SAINT IGNATIUS GAME NOTES #58MILESTOCANTON 3

Wildcats Storylines ...IT’S YOUR THING: The Saint Ignatius offense has established its identity in the first four games – build a short and interme-diate passing game and pound opponents into submission with a strong running game. Running backs Mark Bobinski and Jahadge “Bo” Floyd have done heavy lifting this season, combining for 613 rushing yards and 7 touchdowns through four games. The Wildcats average 42.5 carries a game for 165.5 yards. In four games, the squad has 9 rushing touch-downs and averages 3.89 yards per carry. Look for Bobinski and Floyd to pound the ball against Elder.

FOOTSTEPS IN THE DARK: The impact of the Saint Ignatius front seven cannot be emphasized enough. The Wildcats have shut down opponents’ running games, allowing just 298 yards and 2 touchdowns on the ground through four games. Logan Joyce and Liam Eichenberg have played key roles this sea-son, combining for 37.5 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, 6 quarterback hurries, and two fumble recoveries. Zack McMahan has burst onto the scene, too, notching 2 tackles, 1 TFL, 1 forced fumble, and a quarterback hurry last week.

WORK TO DO: Every game this season, wideout Sam Sny-der has employed a workmanlike attitude, ignoring the suc-cesses of the previous contest and focusing on catching every pass thrown his way. Snyder, dubbed the “Ringmaster” by his coaches, has thrived as the top receiver, hauling in 25 passes for 407 yards and 3 touchdowns. Paired with wideout Michael Drobnick on the otherside, Snyder has excelled with quarterback Kyle Hall. Senior Dan Alexander figured into the action last week after a solid week of practice and also worked well with Snyder.

YOU MAKE ME WANT TO SHOUT: The Wildcats’ second-ary has provided plenty of opportunities for fans to jump for joy this season. The Saint Ignatius secondary has nine interceptions through four games, along with 12 pass break-ups. Cornerback Cameron Toppin tops the team with three, while Sands has caught two. Matt Viancourt, Jett Elad, Daniel Scelza, and Aidan Rechin have also made the airwaves a No Fly Zone.

GET INTO SOMETHING: The Wildcats’ defense have got into opponents’ pockets this season. The Football Cats have 12 sacks, or 3 per game, in 2017. Ten Wildcats have had a hand in a sack, with Aidan Gill leading the squad with 2.5.

VOYAGE TO CINCINNATI: For the first time since 2001, the Wildcats will journey to “The Pit.” The historic stadium and unfriendly crowd will pose a challenge for the Wildcats, who are 1-1 all-time at the famous field.

Learning about the Panthers ...LOOKING TO BOUNCE BACK: The Elder Panthers entered last week’s game vs. St. Edward with a perfect mark of 3-0. The Eagles ended the unbeaten streak for the Panthers, pounding the visitors, 40-7. The Eagles dominated in all fac-ets of the contest, setting a running clock into motion by the fourth quarter with a 33-0 lead. Following the difficult loss, Coach Doug Ramsey and the Panthers will try to get back on track on Saturday.

NIFTY NIEMAN: The Panthers’ offense is led by its quarter-back, Danny Nieman. The senior signalcaller helms the of-fense with his solid arm. Nieman helped Elder roll past Oak Hills at home, completed 16-of-19 passes for 180 yards and a touchdown. Nieman generated almost all of Elder’s offense vs. St. Edward, completing 10-of-21 passes for 120 yards through the air.

NEXT MAN UP: Leading up to the 2017 season, an injury to running back Jack Mazza, a senior co-captain, left the Pan-thers with a hole at running back. Enter Luke Masminster. The junior was originally slated to be a starting linebacker for the Panthers. However, Mazza’s injury and Masminster’s passion for running back earned the young talent the start-ing gig. Masminster has capitalized on his chance, most notably in the win over Oak Hills. Masminster decimated the Oak Hills defense, turning 17 carries into 112 rushing yards and an impressive four touchdowns. The junior also turned in 45 receiving yards. The Wildcats will want to watch out for Masminster on Saturday.

SAFETIES FIRST: To combat the Wildcats’ successful ground game, the Panthers will likely utilize their safeties to stop the run. Elder have talented safeties, as Head Coach Chuck Kyle ‘69 told Eddie Dwyer this week. The Panthers will focus on stopping the run, forcing the Wildcats to air it out with start-ing signalcaller Dan Alexander.

FORMATION FRENZY: Helmed by veteran coach Doug Ramsey, the Panthers have plenty of tricks up their sleeves. The Panthers often use a variety of formations to surprise and confound opposing defenses. As Coach Kyle said this week, expect Elder to use unbalanced lines and other differ-ent formations to try to trick the Wildcats.

SLOPPY SECONDS: The Panthers must be careful to avoid the downfall of the Wildcats’ previous opponents – sloppy second quarters. The Wildcats have outscored opponents, 45-20, in the second stanza. The Panthers need to build an early lead to avoid falling behind and becoming vulnerable to Coach Kyle’s legendary second half adjustments.

RB JAHADGE FLOYD ‘19

S MATT VIANCOURT ‘18Playing safety for the Wildcats is sometimes difficult, as the posi-tion demands both run support and help over the top. Viancourt has performed admirably in both areas. The senior notched a team-high 5.5 tackles vs. Detroit Catholic Central, add-ing 1.5 TFL, a fumble recovery, and intercep-tion. On the year, Vi-ancourt has 14 tackles and 3 TFL. Viancourt will be key vs. Elder.

BY THE NUMBERS/WILDCAT WATCH

Over the past few weeks, Jahadge “Bo” Floyd has become a major cog in the Saint Ignatius offensive machine. The junior galloped for a 72-yard score against the Shamrocks last week and has 233 rushing yards and 3 TDs on the season. Look for Floyd to spell Bobinski against the Panthers on Saturday.

2017 SAINT IGNATIUS GAME NOTES 10

EDDIE DWYER’S PREVIEWOHIO CITY - Saint Ignatius, under the direction of Hall of Fame

Head Coach Chuck Kyle ‘69, and the Elder Panthers of veteran Head Coach Doug Ramsey have met on the gridiron four previous times.

The most recent encounter took place on November 29th, 2008, when the Wildcats turned back Elder, 28-20, in the OHSAA Division I State Championship Game at historic Canton Fawcett Stadium, now known as Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium. That victory by the ‘Cats was the 10th of their record 11 big-school state football championships.

Elder and Saint Ignatius had their first football matchup on Hal-loween of 1998 and the Wildcats came away with a 21-20 triumph in overtime. The Panthers won the next two meetings, 23-7 in 2001 and 45-35 in 2002.

Nearly nine years after their state championship matchup of 2008, Saint Ignatius and Elder will test each other’s will for a fifth time in one of Ohio’s games to watch this coming weekend. Satur-day’s kickoff from Elder’s storied venue “The Pit” will be 2 PM.

While Saint Ignatius has taken its 4-0 start to the top ranking in the Associated Press Division I State Poll and National and Midwest Regional prominence in USA Today’s rankings, Elder is coming off its first setback after a 3-0 start.

And it was a loss that many of the Panthers’ faithful are still shak-ing their heads over.

After defeating then back-to-back Division I state champion St. Edward at The Pit in 2016, 15-9, Elder agreed to a rematch with the Eagles in 2017, which took place this past Saturday night at Bed-ford’s Bearcat Stadium.

Dominating all phases of the game, St. Edward, 4-0 and currently ranked fourth in the AP Division I State Poll, rode three rushing touchdowns and a TD pass by quarterback Zach Kincaid and a smothering defense to a 40-7 victory over the Panthers. The Eagles totaled 372 yards of offense and limited the Panthers to a total of 177 yards.

Elder quarterback Danny Nieman completed 10 of his 21 passes for 102 yards, as the Panthers’ ground game was almost non exis-tent. The team from the Queen City avoided a shutout thanks to a 30-yard touchdown reception by versatile back Luke Massminster early in the fourth quarter.

On Saturday in The Pit, Elder will be facing one of the most complete defenses the Buckeye State, or the entire Midwest for that matter, has to offer in the “Linebacker Legion”- led Wildcats of Saint Ignatius.

After the loss to St. Edward, the Panthers are ranked 11th in latest AP Division I State Poll.

Things don’t get any easier for Elder after Saturday’s encounter with Saint Ignatius, as the Panthers travel to defending Division I State Champion St. Xavier on Friday, September 29th and host Arch-bishop Moeller on Friday, October 6th. St. Edward, Saint Ignatius, St. Xavier and Archbishop Moeller. Yes, I would say that’s a demanding four-game stretch.

HERE IS A LOOK AT THE ELDER PANTHERS COURTESY OF THE MOST SUCCESSFUL COACH IN THE AREA - MR. CHUCK KYLE: “We played a good fourth game of the year and so did St. Eds,” Coach Kyle said of the Wildcats’ impressive 38-7 victory over Detroit Catholic Central, the 2016 big-school state runner-up in Michigan. “Things are kicking into gear, you can see.

“Eds came out and was very patient,” Coach Kyle continued. “It was the 5-yard gain and the 6-yard gain, boom, boom right down the field. I think that sort of shocked Elder a little bit. We have a task ahead of us, playing in The Pit on an afternoon that is supposed to be in the high 80s down there. They (the Panthers) obviously are going to be fired up. They were ranked in the top 10 in the state and then had that happen to them.

By Eddie Dwyer “Defensively, I think they will probably be adjusting a few things, because they were giving up some big runs,” said Coach Kyle. “Maybe they will take a look at the run and see if their safeties can help a little bit there. We’ll have to take a look at that. When you’re blocking guys in the box, it’s kind of hard to block the safeties that are coming up. That’s a concern.”

As for the other side of the ball, Coach Kyle said the Panthers were missing a running back and that this season the run seems to be a little more pronounced in Elder’s offense. He added that he thought the Panthers’ short passing game was pretty effective.

In previous seasons, Elder featured a passing game led by quarterback Peyton Ramsey, Coach Ramsey’s son and a redshirt freshman at Indiana University.

“I think there is just a little change in the flow of their offense,” added the man who has been guiding his alma mater’s football program since 1983. “They’re well-schooled, their technique is good and they pass block well. They’ll do a lot of unbalanced line and move the backs around. They’re creative in that area and our kids have to recognize it. All week we’ve been working on formation recognition.”

As several coaches in the Queen City have said, Elder comes at you with a plethora of formations.

AT THE CONTROLS: Coach Kyle said senior Daniel Alexander will be his starting quarterback on Saturday, pointing to the big plays Daniel made in the second half versus Detroit Catholic Cen-tral on Byers Field last weekend.

SOME NUMBERS TO CHEW ON: As they did during their 2016 Division I state runner-up season with Jimmy Andrews ‘17 and Mark Bobinski ‘18, the Wildcats are coming at defenses this fall with the 1-2 punch of Bobinski and junior Jahadge “Bo” Floyd. Mark has rushed for 380 yards and four touchdowns and has seven recep-tions for 42 yards. Jahadge has 233 yards and three touchdowns on 32 carries, including last weekend’s 72-yard TD run versus Detroit Catholic Central. “Bo” also has a 29-yard reception on the season.

Senior wide receiver Sammy Snyder checks in with 25 recep-tions for 407 yards and three touchdowns, and senior Michael Drobnick has 10 receptions for 159 yards and two touchdowns.

Defensively, senior outside linebacker Logan Joyce has 28 tack-les, including 9.5 for a loss of 27 yards. Logan also has two fumble recoveries. Relentless junior linebacker Tommy Eichenberg has 24 tackles, including 5.5 for a loss of 22 yards. Hard-nosed, flying-to-the-ball senior safety Matt Viancourt has 18 tackles, including three for -minus 8 yards, an interception and a fumble recovery. Junior cornerback Jett Elad, who this corner looks upon as one of the true underrated performers in the area, has 13 tackles, five key pass breakups and an interception return for a touchdown of 26 yards.

Last, but certainly not least, this corner’s “Chairmen of the Board” in the defensive secondary, senior safety and Captain Justin Sands and senior Cameron Toppin, who is among the best of the best when it comes to man coverage cornerbacks in Ohio, have numbers that show Justin with 14 tackles, two interceptions, a sack and two other tackles for losses, and Cam with 18 tackles and three interceptions.

ANOTHER BIG GAME IN THE QUEEN CITY THIS WEEKEND: St. Xavier (4-0), ranked second to Saint Ignatius in the AP Division I State Poll and ranked 20th in USA Today’s “Expert” Super 25 Rank-ings, will face Archbishop Moeller (3-1) at Lockland Field on Friday night. Moeller is the state’s 12th-ranked Division I team. The Crusad-ers’ only setback came to nationally ranked Louisville Trinity.

Friday’s game will feature two of the top quarterbacks in the state, St. Xavier’s Chase Wolf and Archbishop Moeller’s Miles McBride. The Crusaders haven’t beaten the Bombers since 2014. The last three regular-season meetings between the two have been decided by a total of 17 points.

DCC RECAP

PARMA - Linebackers Logan Joyce and Tommy Eichenberg, along with safety Matt Viancourt, helped fuel the ‘Cats’ defensive charge and running backs Mark Bobinski and Jahadge “Bo” Floyd com-bined with senior wide receiver Sammy Snyder and senior quarter-back Daniel Alexander in leading an offense that again received a solid night from the relentless young men up front, aka the offensive line.

The top-ranked team in the seven-county area by Cleveland.com, the second-ranked Division I program in the state by the Associated Press and the No. 1 program in the all-important Joe Eitel Division I, Region 1 computer playoff rankings, Saint Ignatius (4-0) will now turn its attention to the Panthers from Cincinnati Elder.

Elder, currently 3-0 heading into tomorrow’s (Saturday) game versus 3-0 St. Edward at 7 PM in Bedford’s Bearcat Stadium, will host the Wildcats next Saturday (Sept. 23) at 2 PM in Elder Stadium, traditionally known as The Pit. As always, this corner will preview the Wildcats-Panthers matchup early next week.

Saint Ignatius and Elder have split their previous four meet-ings on the gridiron, with the most recent encounter taking place in the 2008 Division 1 State Championship Game, a 28-20 triumph by the Wildcats for their 10th of what are a record 11 state football titles. That 10th OHSAA gold trophy was secured in then legendary Canton Fawcett Stadium, which is now known as Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium.

Here is a breakdown on Friday night’s matchup with Detroit Catholic Central, as Saint Ignatius avenges last season’s 28-21 over-time loss that took place in Novi, Michigan and evens the all-time football series with the Shamrocks at 1-1.

THE EARLY GOING Saint Ignatius rode a 13-play drive that ate up 4 minutes and 54

seconds, and took a 3-0 lead off a 20-yard field goal by standout senior kicker Matthew Trickett.

The ‘Cats’ defense then came to the fore as tough and talented junior linebacker Tommy Eichenberg rolled with the play, went air born and tipped a pass that was alertly intercepted by senor safety Matt Vinacourt, who gave his offense possession at the Shamrocks’ 18-yard line.

From there, Saint Ignatius needed just one play to score, as ju-nior tailback Jahadge “Bo” Floyd, unleashing his burst, balance and vision, swept the left side and into the Day Drive end zone of Byers Field in a matter of six seconds. Trickett’s extra-point kick was high and true, and the Wildcats led, 10-0, with 1:43 remaining in the first quarter.

TAKING CHARGE With its defense keeping the Shamrocks’ offense under control,

Saint Ignatius got a spark from senior quarterback Daniel Alexander.Alexander, taking over for fellow senior and starter Kyle Hall,

made an exceptional move under heavy pressure, stepped up in the pocket and hit gifted senior wide receiver Sammy Snyder for a first down at the Detroit Catholic Central 14-yard line.

The Wildcats’ faithful, led by the outstanding Student Body sup-port, roared with approval after Alexander swept the left side and, off a highlight-reel move that froze a would-be-tackler, scored on a 4-yard touchdown run into the scoreboard end zone of Byers Field. Trickett was the ticket on the PAT and the ‘Cats led, 17-0, 1:39 to go in the first half.

Saint Ignatius wasn’t finished with its second-quarter business, as senior linebacker Logan Joyce, who is having a special season off the outside edge, pounced on a fumble at the Shamrocks’ 19-yard line.

Senior tailback/Captain Mark Bobinski, one of the area’s premier backs, converted Joyce’s heads-up play into six points by carrying the ball three consecutive times. The third carry saw Mark power his way over the right side, apply an authoritative stiff arm and make a clever spin move into the scoreboard end zone. After Trickett was

By Eddie Dwyer money again on the extra point, the Wildcats had built themselves a 24-0 lead by halftime.

THE FINISHING TOUCHES It was more of “Bo” being “Bo” in the second half. On the second play of the third quarter, Jahadge Floyd had his

teammates, coaches, family and friends celebrating as he swept the left side in front of the Wildcats’ bench, broke a tackle, blew by an attempted arm tackle and raced 72 yards into the Day Drive end zone for his second TD of the night. This old gridiron grinder was grinning from ear to ear, my friends. And these Irish ears aren’t small.

After the Shamrocks (2-2) avoided a shutout behind the passing combination of quarterback Marco Genrich to wide receiver Kevin Korte that led to a 2-yard scoring run by Genrich, Alexander and Snyder gave Detroit Catholic Central one more play to recall on the return trip to Novi - a 45-yard touchdown pass that showcased Dan-iel’s arm and the superb route running and sure hands of Snyder.

FROM WILDCATS HALL OF FAME HEAD COACH CHUCK KYLE ‘69

“Those are wonderful,” said Coach Kyle of the turnovers the Wildcats’ defense created, which were capped off by an intercep-tion from junior defensive back Aidan Rechin. “I thought we got good field position for the most part. The offense, it took a little while. We had the lead, but I thought we had some other opportuni-ties to get in the end zone. They (the offense) got a real good feel-ing for what they were doing and made some adjustments.

“Their (the Shamrocks) running backs are tough kids and very physical, and our defense went out there and matched that tough-ness,” Coach Kyle continued.”

When referring to Mark Bobinski and Jahadge “Bo” Floyd, Coach Kyle emphasized how important it is to have two talented and reli-able running backs.

“Look at our schedule,” Coach Kyle said. “To ask one running back to go against these defenses, this caliber of football, I don’t think it’s fair to the kid. Bo Floyd, as you’ve seen, he can find some seams.”

Coach Kyle also pointed out that Daniel Alexander has been looking good in practice and deserved the chance he received on Friday night.

FROM THE YOUNG MAN IN THE MIDDLE OF COACH ADAM RINI’S AND COACH PAUL YAPPEL’S OFFENSIVE LINE, SENIOR CENTER JIVAN MEGUERDITCHIAN

“It all starts with chemistry, on and off the field,” said Jivan, a tireless worker who puts forth every ounce of the energy and talent that God gave him. “Especially off the field. I would say that in my opinion we are the closest knit group off the field and that helps us thrive on it. So when we can come together for film, and especially in practice, it’s building together, being able to take on double teams, moving to the second level and opening up holes for guys like Bo and Mark.

“Business as usual,” Jivan said when this corner asked him if there were any adjustments the O-Line had to make when Danny Alexander took over for Kyle Hall Friday night. “They’re both phenomenal quarterbacks. If one is not having the greatest day, the other is ready. They both know exactly what they’re doing and honestly the whole offense just runs the same. With the help of the line, the receivers, the backs and everybody, we’re actually able to elevate them (Kyle and Daniel) to do the best they can.”

FROM SENIOR LINEBACKER LOGAN JOYCE, WHO TEAMS WITH TOMMY EICHENBERG IN GIVING WILDCATS OUTSTANDING DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR AND LINEBACKERS COACH RYAN FRANZINGER ‘02 TWO EXCEPTIONAL ATHLETES ON THE EDGES OF THE ‘CATS’ DEFENSE.

“We do a good job of gang tackling and obviously they (the Shamrocks) were going to come out and try to pound it down our throat. Yeah, we came out to play.”

3900 Vincent Ave, Cincinnati, OH 45205Built: 1947Renovated: 2005Playing Surface: Artificial TurfSeating Capacity: 10,000 Elder Stadium, referred to by many as The Pit, is home to one of the best atmospheres in all of high school football. The Pit was originally being construct-ed in 1930 by students and families, but was not fin-ished until 1947 because of World War II. This stadium holds approximately 10,000 fans and has several distin-guishing characteristics that make it unique among all other venues. The Pit takes a horseshoe shape, one similar to Ohio Stadium, home of the Buckeyes, giving the feeling that the fans are hovering over the field. Another notable feature is that the stands are only five yards away from the sidelines, adding to the close-knit feel of the stadium. Also, the locker rooms are located under the stadium and were built in part by Elder players at the time. The Pit has even garnered comparisons to Wrigley Field due to nearby homeowners constructing decks to see all of the action from afar. The Pit is not only home to iconic football moments, but a special event occurred in May of 1987. The Mov-ing Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall was located inside Elder Stadium for a week. The wall has the names of eleven Elder students who made the ultimate sacrifice in the Vietnam War and an excess of 80,000 people visited the memorial during its time at the stadium. Elder Stadium, located on the west side of Cincinnati and hollowed into Price Hill, received its nickname The Pit because the field is recessed into the ground. The Pit received a renovation in 2005 when artificial turf was inserted inside the stadium. The Pit was named as one of our country’s 10 great places to watch a high school football game by USA Today in 2001. The stadium is the longtime home of the two-time state champion Elder Panthers.

On September 17, 1920, seven men, including the legendary Jim Thorpe met in Canton, Ohio to form the American Professional Football Association (APFA), a precursor to today’s National Football League. An early hotbed of football, Canton was selected

as the site of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, which opened its doors on September 7, 1963. Before the Hall of Fame came into existence, Faw-

cett Stadium was erected in 1938. The facility housed the successful McKinley Bulldogs. After the Hall of Fame was built in Fawcett’s back-

yard, the stadium hosted the Hall of Fame Game be-ginning in 1962. The first two Hall of Fame enshrine-ments took place in Fawcett Stadium, too.For a period of time in the 1990’s and 2000’s, Faw-

cett Stadium hosted the OHSAA’s Division I State Championship games. Saint Ignatius football fans be-came well-acquainted during this time, as the Wild-cats played six state title games at Fawcett Stadium. The Wildcats’ third state title in 1991 was played at

Fawcett, as the Football Cats defeated Centerville,

24-21. The Wildcats also won titles in 1992, 1999, 2001, 2008, and 2011 in front of adoring Wildcats fans in the historical stadium.During years in which the Wildcats played at

Fawcett, the football program adopted the phrase 58 Miles to Fawcett. The team’s 2017 hashtag plays off that theme. The stadium was renamed Tom Benson Hall of

Fame Stadium after its most recent renovation, completed in August 2017. So, the Wildcats retired the phrase 58 Miles to Fawcett. With the return of the OHSAA State Champion-

ship to Canton, the theme #58MilesToCanton has been adopted. The theme will be used on social media, apparel, and other items. After falling short of a state title in 2016, the Wildcats will look to retun to Canton in 2017 and claim the program’s state record 12th state title.
