Game 5: FIU Returns to Riccardo Silva Stadium to Face First Time Foe TulaneThe FIU football team returns to Riccardo Silva Stadium on Saturday for just the second time this season as it wel-comes first-time foe Tulane, out of the American Athletic Conference, to Miami. The Panthers come into the contest with Tulane looking to equal their best start in school his-tory, joining the 2011 squad that also began the season with a 4-2 record. Fans can also listen to the game on 790 the Ticket, the Panthers’ official radio broadcast home for the 2017 season, or by logging onto either www.FIUSports.com or www.theticketmiami.com. A.J. Ricketts (play-by-play) and Hurlie Brown (color analyst) will be in the booth all season long.

FIU is also 2-1 in Conference USA play this season with wins over Rice and Charlotte. The only setback came last weekend at Middle Tennessee. The Panthers also started their conference season 2-1 in 2008 (Sun Belt), 2010 (Sun Belt) and 2014 (Conference USA). FIU will resume conference play on Oct. 28 at Marshall following its bye week next weekend.

The 2017 campaign marks the long-anticipated return of Butch Davis to the sidelines. Davis, who was named head coach of the Panthers on Nov. 15, 2016, returns to the field for the first time since the 2010 season when he was the head coach at North Carolina. Davis spent seven seasons in Chapel Hill with the Tar Heels and six seasons at the helm of the Miami Hurricanes. Complete Butch Davis bio on pages 9-10.

Saturday will mark the first-ever meeting between FIU and Tulane.

The Panthers are coming off a tough 37-17 loss at Middle Tennessee last weekend. Quarterback Alex McGough threw for 209 yards on 20-of-31 passing with one interception and a touchdown. In addition, he also rushed for a touchdown, the 15th of his career. McGough’s main target was wide receiver Thomas Owens, who caught 11 passes for 162 yards and a touchdown. His 162 yards fell just four yards shy of equaling his single-game high. Alex Gardner led the ground attack with 43 yards on 11 carries.

Defensively, Bryce Canady led the way with a career-high nine tackles in the loss.

Tulane comes into Saturday’s game with a 3-2 record and a 1-1 mark in the American. The Green Wave are coming off a convincing 62-28 win over Tulsa last Saturday in New Orleans. Tulane will host another Florida school next week in the “Big Easy” as USF visits Yulman Stadium.

Game Notablesu The Panthers look to improve to 4-2 for the second time in school history, joining the 2011 team that also accom-plished the feat. A win would equal the best start in school history. The 2011 team finished the season with an 8-5 record (5-3 Sun Belt) and played in the Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl in St. Petersburg, Florida.u FIU looks for its first win over Tulane and to even its record this season against AAC schools at 1-1. The Panthers lost to UCF, 61-17, in the season-opener.u Saturday is the sixth game for Butch Davis at FIU (3-2), and 134th of his collegiate head coaching career.u The Tulane game was supposed to be the final non-conference game of the season for the Panthers, however due to the Indiana game being canceled and deferred to a future year, FIU added UMass to the schedule on Dec. 2 (unless FIU plays in the Conference USA Championship game).u Saturday will mark the 184th game in FIU history.

Road WarriorsIncluding last weekend’s game at Middle Tennessee, the Panthers have sure racked up the travel miles through the first seven weeks of the college football season. FIU’s game against Charlotte (W, 30-29) on Sept. 30 was FIU’s first “true” home game of the 2017 season after playing three-consecutive games on the road. The Sept. 30 game at Rice - a 13-7 win - was the third-straight game that FIU played away from Miami this year. The Panthers played their season-opener on Aug. 31 at UCF (L, 61-17) and were scheduled to play their home-opener on Sept. 9, at Riccardo Silva Stadium, against Alcorn State. That game, however, was moved to Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama, due to Hurricane Irma. FIU defeated the Braves, 17-10. The Panthers were scheduled to face Indiana in Bloomington on Sept. 16, but that game was also canceled and deferred to a future year due to Hurricane Irma.

In addition to the football team, football coaching staff and their families, better than 100 student-athletes from eight sports (swimming and diving, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s soccer, women’s golf and tennis) at FIU were relocated to Birmingham to escape from Hurricane Irma. The football team left on Sept. 7 via charter flight, while the rest of the student-athletes - along with coaches - left at 7 a.m. on Sept. 7 arriving in Birmingham on Sept. 8 at 5 a.m., normally just an 11-hour drive. First Time StartersFour Panthers made their first-career starts during FIU’s season-opener at UCF on Aug. 31. Defensive tackles Anthony Johnson and Josh Little, and safety Bryce Canady got the call on the defensive side of the ball, while right guard Dallas Connell started on offense.

Making their DebutIn addition to Josh Little getting his first career start during FIU’s game at UCF, 21 players made their collegiate de-buts against the Knights. Kyle Perez, Khairi Reaser, JoJo Louis, Bryce Singleton, DeVonte Price, Jose Borregales, Richard Dames, Sean Young, Daniel Jackson, Brandon James, Trayvone Blake, Shane McGough, Danzel King, Jamal Gates, Doug Connell, Zach Armour, DeAndre Williams, Pharoah McKever, Noah Curtis, Kevin Oliver and Andrew Tarver took the field for the first time for the Panthers. New to the StaffWith the arrival of Butch Davis as head coach, he also brought in an impressive assistant coaching staff. Of the nine assistants, eight are in their first year at FIU and include: Allen Mogridge (Asst. Head Coach/Offensive Line), Brent Guy (Defensive Coordinator/Linebackers), Rich Skrosky (Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks), Jeff Copp (De-fensive Backs), Aubrey Hill (Wide Receivers), Kenny Holmes (Defensive Line), Eric Thatcher (Defensive Backs), James Vollono (Special Teams Coordinator). The lone hold over from the previous coaching regime is Tim Harris, Jr. (Running Backs).

Two of Davis’s assistants, Guy and Skrosky, boast collegiate head coaching experience on their resumes. Following two years at Boise State as defensive coordinator, helping the Broncos to national prominence, Guy spent three years as head coach at Utah State. Skrosky arrives in Miami after spending three seasons as the head man at Elon.

Stone Wilson Earns C-USA Special Teams Player of the Week AwardJunior punter Stone Wilson (Nokomis, Fla./IMG Academy) has been named the Conference USA Special Teams Player of the Week, for the week ending Sept. 30. Wilson punted five times for 229 yards, and an average of 45.8 yards-per-punt, in FIU’s 30-29 come-from-behind win over Charlotte on Sept. 30, including a long of 56 yards and placed two inside the 20-yard line. That 56-yard punt couldn’t have come at a better time, pinning the 49ers at their own two-yard line with 4:52 left in the game. His 56-yard punt is second only to his 67-yard boot against UCF in the season opener on Aug. 31.

Wint Named to Preseason All-C-USA TeamOn July 17 senior Anthony Wint was named to this year’s 2016 preseason All-Conference USA Football Team, as chosen by the league’s 13 head coaches.

Seniors Thomas Owens and Anthony Wint were named second-team selections, while junior Fermin Silva and senior Treyvon Williams earned third-team recognition. Senior Alex Gardner and junior Kai Absheer along with sophomore Isaiah Brown received fourth-team honors. Owens also earned third-team honors on special teams.

All-Conference in 2016A total of 10 Panthers were recognized by Conference USA, including Second-Team All-C-USA selections senior Jonnu Smith and junior Anthony Wint, as the league announced its all-conference football teams following the 2016 campaign. Gardner Nominated for Wuerffel AwardSenior Alex Gardner has been nominated for the 2017 Wuerffel Trophy. Gardner is one of 114 student-athletes considered for the award honoring college football’s top community servant. Gardner, FIU’s all-time leading rusher, is extremely active in the community, representing the FIU football program. The four-year starter at running back has assisted in teaching a fundamental skills camp as part of the Orange Bowl Football Alliance Clinics. These camps featured offensive, defensive and agility drills, while also stressing the importance of character development and good sportsmanship. Gardner has also been a mentor for students at Earlington Heights Elementary where he spoke to the students about the importance of good grades and how hard work and dedication leads to success. The Jacksonville, Florida, native has also worked with the Miami-Dade Police Athletic League (PAL), giving presen-tations to kids that focused on education, hard work, and perseverance.

On The RunAlex Gardner enters the Tulane game ranked 10th in Conference USA in rushing yards-per-game, averaging 61.2 per outing. Gardner has recorded 306 yards oin 72 carries and has found his way into the end zone once. Napoleon Maxwell is second on the team, averaging 34.8 yards-per-contest (22-174) and Shawndarrius Phillips is third, run-ning for 26.4 yards-per-game (36-142).

Alex McGough is averaging just 9.8 yards-per-carry, however he leads the team with four rushing touchdowns on the season.

Quarterbacks

Mr. McGough Looks for Big SeasonAfter a stellar sophomore campaign, senior quarterback Alex McGough looks for a bounce back season following a 2016 season that ended three games early due to an injury. The Tampa, Florida, native finished the year completing 167-of-268 passes for 1,891 yards and 13 touchdowns. McGough missed the final three games of 2016 against WKU, Marshall and Old Dominion with a hand injury. Despite the rough junior campaign, McGough enters his final season looking to continue his climb among the program’s all-time leaders.

Alex McGough threw for 201 yards on 18-of-29 passing, one touchdown and an interception in the season-opener against UCF on Aug. 31. His touchdown strike of 75 yards, to Thomas Owens, is tied for the seventh longest touch-down pass in school history.

Mr. McGough ... You’ve Done it AgainAlex McGough had a solid outing in Panthers’ game against Alcorn State. McGough threw for 328 yards on 21-of-33 passing with no interceptions. And although he didn’t throw for a touchdown against the Braves, he led the game-winning drive beginning with less than four minutes on the clock, and then scored the game-winner on a one-yard plunge with 1:16 left in the game. His 328 yards marked his fourth-career 300-plus yard game, and the second best of his career behind the 390 yards he threw for against Old Dominion (Oct. 24, 2015).

McGough Spearheads Second Half SurgeMcGough was a major factor in FIU winning its third-straight game on Sept. 30 – a 30-29 come-from-behind victory over Charlotte – and improving to 3-1 on the year and 2-0 in Conference USA. McGough had a hand in three of the Panthers’ four touchdowns against the 49ers, while helping to spearhead FIU’s 19-point comeback (trailed 26-7 with one minute left in the first half). He threw for 206 yards on 14-of-26 passing, including one touchdown (a six-yard strike to Thomas Owens) and one interception, and also rushed for 46 yards on six carries and two touchdowns. He put the team on his back in the second half after trailing 26-14 at the intermission. McGough scored his two rushing touchdowns in the second stanza, with 5:40 left in the third quarter on an eight-yard run to make the score 29-21, and a 14-yard scamper with 12:43 left in the game, cutting the 49ers lead to 29-27.

McGough in the FIU Record BooksCurrently, Alex McGough finds himself in the school’s top three in career completions (664 – 3rd), attempts (1,127 – 2nd), passing yards (7,409 – 3rd) and is the school’s all-time leader in passing touchdowns (52 – 1st).

Running Backs

A1 the WorkhorseRunning back Alex Gardner was a workhorse in 2015 and he followed that up with a banner 2016 season, rushing for 930 yards on 181 carries with six touch-downs. The 930 yards on the ground were the third-most in FIU history, while his 181 attempts was fourth in school history and nine rushing touchdowns ranked No. 3 all-time at FIU in a season.

He Doesn’t Just Run the Ball Alex Gardner finished 2016 fourth on the team in recep-tions and fifth in receiving yards last season. Gardner collected 30 catches for 191 yards.

Currently, this season, Gardner has caught eight pass-es for 15 yards (3.0 ypg).

Gardner Hits the Century Mark Once AgainAlex Gardner posted his first 100-yard game, rushing for 102 yards and one touchdown on 20 carries against Alcorn State on Sept. 8. His 102-yard outing marks the 10th of his career.

Gardner in the FIU Record BooksAlex Gardner is currently ranked at the top of the list in career rushing yards (2,578 – 1st), rushing attempts (576 – 1st), and rushing touchdowns (17 – 3rd).

Napoleon Felt DynamiteJunior running back Napoleon Maxwell made his return to the gridiron in the season-opener at UCF on Aug. 31 after missing the last two seasons with an injured knee. Maxwell led the team in rushing against the Knights with 61 yards on four carries and a touchdown. His touch-

down came on a 51-yard scamper in the fourth quarter, marking the first time since Nov. 13, 2010 that a Pan-ther scored a rushing touchdown on a run of 50-or-more yards (T.Y. Hilton, 61 yards at Troy).

Maxwell led the ground attack against Charlotte for the Panthers, on Sept. 30, with 76 yards on five carries (15.2 ypg).

So far this season, Maxwell is leading the team in yards-per-carry, recording 7.9 per rush. He has run for 174 yards on 22 carries.

Wide Receivers

TO Poised for Another Big SeasonSenior wide receiver Thomas Owens is back for his final season and, once again, will more than likely be quarterback Alex McGough’s primary target. Owens started in all 12 games for the Panthers and caught 47 passes for 652 yards and seven touchdowns. He led FIU in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touch-downs, and averaged 54.3 yards-per-game and 13.9 yards-per-catch. The Boynton Beach native recorded two 100-yard games, including a 148-yard performance at Charlotte on Oct. 15. He had three multi-touchdown games and was one TD catch shy of tying the school record for touchdown catches in a season (8). He was ranked No. 13 in the conference and No. 68 nationally in receiving touchdowns and moved to No. 4 all-time in career TD catches at FIU (15).

Consecutive Games with a TDDuring the 2015 season, Thomas Owens set the school record for consecutive games with a touchdown recep-tion. Owens registered a TD catch in six-straight games (9/12/15 - 10/17/15).

Off on the Right FootThomas Owens got off on the right foot in the season opener at UCF. Owens caught four passes for 99 yards and one touchdown against the Knights, one yard shy of his fifth career 100-yard receiving game. His touch-down reception against the Knights, a 75-yard catch from Alex McGough, is tied for his career-long TD re-ception, and the seventh-longest in school history.

Against Charlotte, on Sept. 30, Owens recorded 101 yards on seven receptions and one touchdown, a six-yard pass from Alex McGough. His 101-yard outing was the fifth of his career.

He followed the Charlotte game up with a season-best performance at Middle Tennessee on Oct. 7. Owens caught 11 passes for 162 yards and a touchdown against the Blue Raiders. It was his second-straight 100-yard receiving game. His 162 yards fell just four yards shy of equaling his single-game career-high of 166 yards set at Indiana on Sept. 12, 2015.

Owens comes into the Tulane game as the team-leader in receiving yards-per-game with 92.4 per outing. He has 27 catches for 462 yards in five games.

Not a One Trick PonyNot only did Thomas Owens catch a pass for a touch-down in the Panthers’ come-back win over Charlotte on Sept. 30, he was also responsible for FIU’s first touch-down of the game. Owens found fellow wide receiver Julian Williams with 6:11 left in the first quarter on a 35-yard pass for a TD. It was Owens’ first career touch-down pass and the second-longest pass for a touch-down this season, second only to Alex McGough’s 75-yard bomb to Owens at UCF in the season-opener on Aug. 31.

Owens’ Career TD CatchesThomas Owens is currently ranked in the school’s top five in career receiving touchdowns (18 - tied for 3rd).

His long reception of the night was a 41-yard catch on the FIU’s final drive of the game that led to the Panthers’ game-winning touchdown.

Williams is second on the team in receiving yards-per-game, averaging 53.2 per contest on 19 catches for 266 yards (14.0 ypc) and one touchdown.

Tight Ends

Goodbye Mr. Smith; Off to NashvilleFIU took a big hit with the graduation of Jonnu Smith, one of the premier tight ends in college football over the past few years. Smith was drafted in the third round, 100th overall, in the NFL Draft in April, the third-high-est in FIU history behind Johnathan Cyprien (No. 33 in 2013) and T.Y. Hilton (No. 92 in 2012). During 2016 Smith caught 42 passes for 506 yards and four touch-downs. He became the fifth player in FIU history to reg-ister over 2,000 yards receiving during a career (2,001 yards). Smith averaged 12.0 yards-per-catch and 46.0 yards-per-game in 2016. He finished his career regis-tering at least one reception in every game he played (43-straight – second-most in school history).

The New Elder StatesmanCertainly replacing one of the top tight ends in program history is a tall task, however, the Panthers have wel-comed an intriguing option in graduate transfer Pharo-ah McKever (N.C. State).

At an athletic 6-foot-6, 242 pounds, McKever will be a big dangerous target for quarterback Alex McGough. McKever played his first full season at tight end for the Wolfpack in 2016 after moving to the position prior to practice for the Belk Bowl in 2015. McKever proceeded to catch an 82-yard touchdown reception in the game - the 11th-longest in school history. He also made an im-pact on special teams blocking a fourth quarter punt vs. Notre Dame that was recovered and returned for the winning touchdown. One of the more versatile players in college football, McKever also played wide receiver and defensive end at N.C. State, and played quarter-back and safety at South Burlington High School.

McKever caught his first touchdown pass in an FIU uniform on Sept. 23 at Rice. The imposing tight end caught an eight-yard pass from Alex McGough in the second quarter for the games only touchdown.

McKever had his most productive game of the season at Middle Tennessee on Oct. 7 catching four passes for a season-high 25 yards.

On the year, McKever is averaging 11.6 receiving yards-per-game. Ha has caught eight passes for 58 yards (7.2 ypr) in five games.

Linebackers

Leaders on the DefenseFIU will look towards its linebacker corps to set the tone for the defense this upcoming year. The Panthers return two of the three starting linebackers from the start of the 2016 season this year. Anthony Wint and Treyvon Williams are back, while Sage Lewis - who played in all but one game last season - will most likely fill the third spot.

Wint: A Tackling MachineAnthony Wint returns for his final season with the Pan-thers having registered 244 career tackles, including a team-leading, and career-high, 109 during the 2016 season. Wint, increased his total by 60 tackles from his freshman to junior campaigns. He moved into the schools top 10 (9th) in career tackles last season.

Coming into Saturday’s game against Tulane, Wint is currently sixth on the school’s career tackles list with 280 to his credit. He is currently seven tackles behind former Panther, Winston Fraser (2009-12).

Wint is off to a solid start this season with 36 tackles, on the year, which is good enough for second on the team, including 29 solo stops and five tackles for a loss (-12).

The Homestead, Florida native recorded 10 tackles, including nine solo, in the Panthers’ win over Rice on Sept. 23. And followed that up with a season-high 11 stops - including nine solo and two tackles for a loss against Charlotte on Sept. 30.

Treyvon Has Been TremendousTreyvon Williams comes into the Tulane game as the team’s leader in total tackles on the year with 39, in-cluding 31 solo. He has also posted four tackles for a loss (-21) and one sack for a loss of 11 yards.

In the season opener against UCF, Williams led the Panthers in tackles with 14 - one shy of equaling his career-high - including eight solo.

Secondary

What Can Isaiah Brown Do For You!Tampa native Isaiah Brown made a big impression at cornerback during his freshman year for the Panthers. Brown led the team in interceptions with three (for 43 yards) of FIU’s six total picks. In addition, he registered a team-high seven passes broken up.

This season, Brown leads the team in pass break ups with five, which is also good enough for a share of third in Conference USA.

Niko’s BackNiko Gonzalez returns at safety for FIU and looks for a big senior campaign. Gonzalez was third on the team in tackles with 55, including 36 solo. He also led the team - and Conference USA - in fumbles recovered with two, was second in passes broken up with four and had one interception.

He is currently fifth on the team in tackles with 21, in-cluding 20 solo.

Hip-Hip-JoseRedshirt freshman kicker Jose Borregales has been quite impressive in his first season on the field for the Panthers. The Miami native leads the Panthers in scoring with 28 points on the year. He comes into the Tulane game having gone 6-of-7 in field goals and is a perfect 10-of-10 on his point-after-touchdowns this season.

Head Coach Butch Davis (First Season)

On Nov. 15, 2016, Butch Davis was named the fourth head coach of the FIU football program, returning to South Florida where he made a name for himself as one of the premier minds in football.

Davis comes to FIU after serving as a college football studio analyst, while also contributing to coverage on College Football Live, ESPN Radio, ESPN.com and SportsCenter since 2014. Before joining ESPN, Davis served as a consultant to former Tampa Bay Buccaneers Head Coach Greg Schiano during the 2012 and 2013 seasons.

Davis last walked the sidelines as head coach at the University of North Carolina (2007-10) where he not only backed up his reputation of rebuilding programs but made just as big of an impact off the field as well. Davis quickly rejuvenated the fan base in Chapel Hill and brought excitement to every Saturday at Kenan Stadium. Beginning with his first Carolina recruiting class in 2007, which many analysts ranked among the top 10 in the country, Davis connected with student-athletes and fans alike with his brand of fast, hard-nosed, disciplined football.

Over his first two seasons, Carolina sold out 12-of-13 contests, increased average attendance by nearly 18 percent and sold a school-record 36,250 season tickets in 2008.

Carolina improved from 4-8 in 2007 to 8-5 in 2008, the sixth-best turnaround in the country. The Tar Heels won games over bowl teams Rutgers, Miami, Connecticut, Notre Dame, Boston College and Georgia Tech and were in the hunt for the 2008 ACC championship until the final week of the season. Carolina’s eight wins were its most since 2001. The Tar Heels earned an invitation to the Meineke Car Care Bowl in Charlotte, their first postseason game since 2004. UNC sold more than 22,000 tickets (10,000 more than its allotment) in just one week of sales and had an estimated 40,000 fans in attendance.

Davis led the 2009 Tar Heels to another 8-4 regular season record and a second-straight bowl appearance, the first time since the 1997-1998 seasons that UNC had made consecutive bowl appearances. A loss to North Carolina State in the final game of the season sent them back to the Meineke Car Care Bowl. UNC faced Pittsburgh and lost for the second-straight year, giving UNC another 8-5 final record. Additionally, Davis led Carolina football to its sixth-consecutive year of graduating more than 75 percent of its football players.

North Carolina posted a third-consecutive 8-5 season in 2010 and its third-straight trip to a bowl game, capping the season with a thrilling 30-27 double-overtime win over Tennessee in the Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl. It was the Tar Heels’ first bowl victory in nine years. During the year, Carolina posted wins over Clemson and at Florida State.

Davis was head coach for six seasons at Miami (1995-2000) and led the Hurricanes to a 51-20 record, three Big East Conference championships and four postseason bowl wins in as many appearances. He took over a Miami program faced with NCAA sanctions that restricted the number of scholarships in his first three seasons. However, his Hurricane teams finished ranked in the Associated Press Top 25 on four occasions, including No. 2 in the nation in 2000, when the Canes went 11-1 and beat Florida, 37-20, in the Sugar Bowl.

In his first year in Coral Gables, Davis helped the Canes earn a share of the Big East Conference Championship by winning seven straight games to close the 2005 season. The team would have received an invitation to a BCS bowl game, however, Miami declined the invitation due to NCAA sanctions previously approved by university officials for violations prior to Davis’ arrival.

Davis again led Miami to a share of the Big East title in 1996 and catapulted the Hurricanes to a top 20 ranking and their first bowl victory in five years with a 31-21 win over Virginia in the Carquest Bowl. The following season he led Miami to a 46-23 win over North Carolina State in the 1998 Micron PC Bowl.

Davis’ 1999 squad began the year with a 23-12 victory over Ohio State in the Kickoff Classic and capped the season with a 28-13 victory over Georgia Tech in the Toyota

Gator Bowl, the Hurricanes’ first New Year’s Day bowl game under Davis. In his final year at Miami (2000), the Hurricanes posted an 11-1 mark, including a 37-20 victory over Florida in the Nokia Sugar Bowl. That team was second in the nation in scoring, fifth in total offense, fifth in scoring defense and eighth in pass defense. Davis also emphasizes the importance of academics, and his Hurricanes earned recognition from the American Football Coaches Association for outstanding graduation rates in each of his six seasons.

Davis left Coral Gables following the 2000 season to join the Cleveland Browns. In his first season in Cleveland in 2001, Davis led his young team to an impressive 7-9 record, exceeding by two the expansion club’s combined victories from 1999 and 2000 (5-27). Cleveland led the NFL in takeaways with 42, including a league-high and team-record 33 interceptions. The Browns defense also scored 32 points (four interception returns, one fumble return, one safety). His second season as head coach resulted in the Browns earning their first playoff appearance and best regular season mark since 1994, despite 34 of the 53 players on the team’s final active roster having four years of NFL experience or less. Cleveland finished the season with a 7-3 mark over its final 10 games, including victories in four of its final six outings, the best record over the final six games of the season for the franchise since 1988.

Cleveland was Davis’ second stint in the NFL. He was a defensive assistant with the Dallas Cowboys from 1989-94 and was defensive coordinator in 1993 and 1994. The Cowboys won consecutive Super Bowls in 1992 and 1993 and played in one other NFC championship game. Davis helped Dallas post one of the most spectacular turnarounds in sports history as the Cowboys went from a lowly 1-15 squad in 1989 to one of the most dominant NFL teams in the 1990s. He was the defensive line coach in the Cowboys’ 52-17 win over Buffalo in Super Bowl XXVII and served as defensive coordinator in the Cowboys’ 30-13 win over Buffalo in Super Bowl XXVIII. As defensive line coach in 1992, Davis helped the Cowboys lead the NFL in rushing defense. As coordinator a year later, the Cowboys set a team record by allowing just 21 touchdowns in 16 regular-season games and allowed one offensive touchdown or less in 12 of 16 games.

Davis was also defensive coordinator during Barry Switzer’s first season as head coach in 1994 and helped Dallas reach the NFC Championship Game, where eventual Super Bowl champion San Francisco denied its bid for a three-peat. Davis’s defense was No. 1 in the league in total defense (269.6 yards per game) and pass defense (172.0 yards per game), and third in scoring defense (15.5 points per game). He coached three Pro Bowl starters - end Charles Haley, tackle Leon Lett and safety Darren Woodson. The three defensive starters were the most for the Cowboys since 1983.

Davis was defensive line coach at Miami from 1984-88 under head coach Jimmy Johnson, whom he also coached under for five years in Dallas and five years at Oklahoma State. The Hurricanes went 52-9 in those five years and won the national championship after beating Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl to cap a perfect 12-0 record in 1987. He coached 15 linemen who went on to play in the NFL, including All-Americas Bill Hawkins, Cortez Kennedy, Russell Maryland, Daniel Stubbs and the late Jerome Brown. Davis’s line was a key part of the Miami defense that finished second in the nation in both scoring defense (9.7 points per game) and total defense (242.0 yards per game) in 1988. The 1986 Hurricanes set a school record with 49 sacks, broke the mark with 50 in 1988 and held opposing rushers to fewer than 2.3 yards per carry in 1987 and 1988.

Davis entered the collegiate coaching ranks on the offensive side of the ball as an assistant on Johnson’s Oklahoma State University teams from 1979-83. At Oklahoma State, Davis coached receivers and tight ends while also serving as recruiting coordinator.

Davis played college football at the University of Arkansas for Coach Frank Broyles, but his career was cut short due to a knee injury. He earned a bachelor’s degree in biology and life science in 1974. His coaching career began as a volunteer assistant in 1973 at Fayetteville High School in Arkansas. He had stints in Oklahoma at Pawhuska High School (1974-75) and Sand Springs High School (1976-77) as an assistant coach and at Tulsa Rogers High School (1978) in his first head coaching assignment before joining Johnson’s staff at Oklahoma State.

Paul Hilton (Butch) Davis is a native of Tahlequah, Oklahoma. Davis and his wife, Tammy, have a son, Drew, who is serving as a graduate assistant on the Panthers’ coaching staff.
