SUMMER LEARNING PROGRAMS 2017

This booklet provides information regarding the Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) summer programs available for students in grades 1-12 during the 2016-17 school year. All summer programs are contingent upon school budget approval as well as sufficient enrollment, staffing, and space.

High school academic programs are based on the school year academic program. They provide opportunities for credit recovery, Standards of Learning (SOL) test remediation, Career and Technical Education (CTE) test preparation, enrichment, and acceleration.

Enrichment institutes and camps focus on specific areas such as fine arts, technology, and science. Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Camp, Tech Adventure Camp (TAC), Institute for the Arts (IFTA), and the Elementary Institute for the Arts (E-IFTA) classes will be held at Lake Braddock Secondary School. Enrichment classes are generally non-credit and vary in length. However, high school students can earn a ½ credit when completing IFTA successfully.

Bus transportation from select FCPS schools to the Credit Recovery Academy and enrichment program sites and back will be available. Transportation to and from the selected schools is the responsibility of the parent/guardian or student. Bus stops and times will be available in June. Visit www.fcps.edu/academics/summer-learning-programs to view transportation information.

Driver Education is open to all eligible high school students under the age of 19 who reside in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Transportation to and from the program is the responsibility of the parent or guardian.

Summer program information may change. For the most current information, visit www.fcps.edu/academics/summer-learning-programs. Summer school attendance is a privilege, and, accordingly, students are expected to comply with the rules of conduct as outlined in Regulation 2601.

SPECIAL EDUCATION EXTENDED SCHOOL YEAR SERVICES

Extended School Year (ESY) Services refer to special education and/or related services provided beyond the regular school year. These services are intended to provide a free, appropriate public education (FAPE) to a student with a disability in accordance with the child’s individualized education program. For additional information, see www.fcps.edu/academics/summer-learning-programs/extended-school-year-esy-services or call the Office of Special Education Instruction at 571-423-4190.

HIGH SCHOOL

Students may earn course credit through the Credit Recovery Academy or the Online Campus program. High school courses are based on the regular year’s academic programs and are available to eligible students who seek credit recovery or academic acceleration. All students must meet the prerequisites to enroll in high school courses.

Algebra 1 is available in the Credit Recovery Academy to students who have previously passed the course and want to strengthen their skills before taking the next level mathematics course. FCPS middle school students, during 2016-17, who expunge their Algebra 1 grade before summer will receive a grade, and a maximum of 1 credit will be reflected on the student’s transcript, with a passing grade.

FCPS middle school students, during 2016-17, who do not expunge the Algebra 1 grade before summer will receive a grade for the school-year and the summer course. Both grades will be reflected on the student’s transcript and a maximum of 1 credit will appear on the student’s transcript with a passing grade for the course. FCPS students may also take Standards of Learning (SOL-EOC) remediation classes, and FCPS term graduates (seniors graduating by August 31) can participate in the SOL Test-Only program.

PLEASE NOTE: No student, employee, or applicant for employment in Fairfax County Public Schools shall, on the basis of age, race, color, sex, religion, national origin, marital status, or disability be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The Credit Recovery Academy provides an opportunity for students to recover a high school standard course credit or an End of Course verified credit, or for students to earn an industry certification. Students may not take a credit recovery course for new course credit. The academy also provides an opportunity for FCPS English Learners to prepare for future academic courses. There is no tuition for FCPS students to attend the Credit Recovery Academy.

CREDIT RECOVERY COURSES

Students are eligible to enroll in a credit recovery course if they have received a grade of F, previously. However, students who have passed Algebra 1 may take the credit recovery course to improve their understanding and skills before the next school year. No additional course credit will be awarded to these students.

CTE TEST PREP

Students who desire a professional credential must pass an industry-developed, industry evaluated exam at the end of the CTE course. CTE Test Prep prepares students for industry certification opportunities. Earning an industry credential demonstrates the professional skill level the student has achieved and provides industry-recognized proof that the student is prepared for career-related responsibilities or post-secondary education or training. The Virginia Board of Education has approved many exams for the purpose of awarding verified credit, specifically designated as “Student-Selected Verified Credit.”

Students shall earn a career and technical education credential approved by the Board that could include, but not be limited to, the successful completion of an industry certification, a state licensure examination, a national occupational competency assessment, or the Virginia Workplace Readiness Assessment.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Online courses and classes are open to eligible middle and high school students who meet prerequisites and technical requirements. Students may take only one online course. Courses are rigorous; therefore, students should consult their counselor and discuss the implications of attempting an online course before registering.

For mathematics courses, all students who have completed a high school mathematics course may accelerate or earn credit recovery via the online campus. Middle school students who have expunged a high school mathematics credit as well as those seeking credit recovery may retake the course via the online campus. Middle school students

may not take a mathematics course during the summer as their first high school level mathematics course.

TIME

Teachers will contact students and establish times to be online for synchronous lessons, establish deadlines for completing assignments, and announce face-to-face meetings. Students need to dedicate 7.5 hours per day to complete a course, including 90 minutes a day for synchronous online instruction with the teacher and peers.

ATTENDANCE

Online courses provide students with some flexibility for completing coursework. However, work is due each day. Students cannot miss any days and must take their midterm, exams, PE fitness testing as well as their SOL/W!SE test on the scheduled dates in the assigned face-to-face setting.

HELPFUL TIPS

Develop a routine. In a face-to-face high school class, regular attendance is a key ingredient for success. The same is true for online classes, particularly during the summer, as classes are fast-paced. Online classes afford students some flexibility in working; however, students are required

to participate in daily synchronous lessons and required to meet daily deadlines. Students will increase their chance for success by participating daily, following a routine work schedule, and by completing assignments on time.

Communicate with the instructor. Although much of an online course can be done asynchronously (online at a different time without the instructor), feedback from the instructor is important. Whether turning in assignments, posting to a discussion thread, or emailing a question for clarity, regular communication with the teacher will assist students in the learning process.

Vacation/Camps/Governor’s School. By registering for a summer course, students are dedicating 7.5 hours daily. Students who are doing other activities during this time need to consider carefully whether they can dedicate the hours to the course as well as other activities. Many residential camps schedule activities for the students/athletes for the entire day, and there is no time to do an online course. We know that the Governor’s School does not permit students to take any online summer classes and attend its school due to the time conflicts.

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS

Students who register for an FCPS online course must have the required resources and should complete the technology checklist available at http://onlinecampus.fcps.edu/media2/orientation/tech_checklist_ss/orient.htm before Wednesday, June 28, 2017 to ensure their computer can access all parts of the online course.

Students will not be able to access and fully complete online courses using iPads, iPhones, Smart Phones, and tablets. Mac support will not be provided by FCPS, but students can use them for their online classes with outside tech support.

To enroll in an online course, students must have the following:

• Windows XP or higher, MAC OS 10.6 or higher

• Working speakers and microphone

• Word processing program

• Adobe Acrobat Reader, Macromedia Flash Player 8.0 or higher, and Windows Media Player 12.0 or higher

• JAVA 1.8 for Windows, Java 7 or 8 for MAC OS X

• Internet Service Provider (ISP) for example Cox Cable, Comcast, Verizon

• An active e-mail account; and, access to their FCPS Google Apps account

• A Java capable browser such as IE10, IE11, or Firefox (Chrome does *not* meet this requirement)

• JavaScript and Cookies must be enabled

GRADING

Students will receive grades for standard high school graded courses. Grades will be calculated according to guidelines outlined in FCPS High School Grading and Reporting to Parents.

• GPA is calculated on the basis of all courses for which credit has been earned or attempted, including repeated courses previously passed.

• Students may take Health and PE 9, Health and PE 10, Economics and Personal Finance, Spanish 2, and Spanish 3, as Pass-Fail but must indicate this at the time of registration. Once class begins, this cannot be changed.
