MEDIA RELEASE Release date: October 30 th , 2017 2017 Champions for Change in the NB Construction Industry Recognized The New Brunswick construction sector in is in a state of transition due to a retiring Baby Boomer labour force and the resulting entry of Millennial apprentices. In the next 10 years, Buildforce Canada is forecasting that there will be 7,600 retirements and 5,200 new entrants in NB’s construction sector. This shift means quite a drain of historical trades knowledge at the same time as a significant influx of new values and expectations into a very traditional economic sector. As a result, it has never been more critical to NB contractors and labour unions to take on innovative strategies such as mentorship programs to ensure smooth workforce transition, retention of apprentices and positive development of NB’s future construction journey persons. In 2013, a partnership of the then named NB Dept. of Post-secondary Education, Training and Labour and the NB Building Trades Unions partnered to create a program called the New Brunswick Mentor Apprentice Program (NB-MAP) and each Fall since 2015 the industry comes together to celebrate change leaders in apprenticeship. The Distinction in Mentorship Awards Gala, hosted by NB-MAP, honours industry and individuals who champion effective mentorship in the construction trades. On November 9th, NB-MAP, government, and business and union leadership will come together in Saint John to recognize those who lead the charge in building strong workplace learning cultures. This year we are so pleased to announce that the recipient of the 2017 Industry Champion Award (over 100 employees) is The International Brotherhood of Boilermakers – Local 73, and Pro Insul Ltd. has been selected as the 2017 Corporate Champion Award (under 100 employees)! NB-MAP Industry Champions set the standard for industry excellence in workplace teaching and learning. The International Brotherhood of Boilermakers – Local 73 based in NB, NS and PEI is being recognized for it’s dedication to on-the-job learning, as demonstrated by their extensive in-house mentorship program and ongoing partnership with NB-MAP. “The Boilermakers as an organization has always recognized the importance of investing in the development of our workforce. When NB-MAP came along it gave us the opportunity to add more structure and competencies among our journey persons to effectively train our apprentices in the workplace, “said David Noel, Business Manager, International Brotherhood of Boilermakers Local 73.

Pro Insul Ltd., a mechanical insulation contractor based in Saint John came on board with NB-MAP in 2016. Pro Insul has set a standard of early innovation with their workforce development strategies based on inclusion and mentorship. Pro Insul’s leadership team was quick to recognize the benefits on a structured mentorship program for their supervisors and apprentices and they have been committed to integrating a mentorship philosophy throughout their workforce. NB-MAP will also recognize the 2017 Master Mentor and 2017 Outstanding Apprentice; individuals who have been nominated by their peers in industry for their dedication to their trade, the apprenticeship system, industry contributions and workplace mentorship. This year’s Major Sponsors are Irving Oil, the NB Building Trades Unions and NB Power. The Distinction Awards are being handcrafted by Brent Rourke of the Barn in Bloomfield. There are about 2 dozen tickets left for this year’s event which is being held at the Lily Lake Pavilion in Saint John on November 9th. Les champions du changement dans l’industrie de la

construction du N.-B. 2017 reconnu Le secteur de la construction au Nouveau-Brunswick est dans un état de transition dû à la retraite de la main d’œuvre des Baby-Boomers et par conséquent l’entrée des apprentis millénaires. Dans les prochains 10 ans, ConstruForce Canada prédit qu’il va avoir 7600 retraites et 5200 nouveaux venus dans le secteur de la construction du N.-B.. Ce décalage représente une perte des connaissances historiques des métiers, en même temps de vivre une entrée significative de nouvelles valeurs et attentes dans un secteur économique très traditionnel. Par conséquent, il n’a jamais été aussi essentiel pour des entrepreneurs et des syndicats du N.-B. de poursuivre des stratégies innovatrices telles qu’un programme de mentorat pour assurer une transition harmonieuse de la main d’œuvre, la rétention des apprentis, ainsi que le développement positif des futurs compagnons de construction du N.-B.. En 2013, le département de l’Éducation postsecondaire, Formation et Travail du N.-B. en partenariat avec Les syndicats des métiers de la construction du Nouveau-Brunswick ont créé le Programme de Mentor Apprenti Nouveau-Brunswick (PMA-NB) et depuis 2015 chaque printemps l’industrie se rassemble pour célébrer ensemble les champions du changement en apprentissage. Le Gala des Prix de Distinction en Mentorat, présenté par le PMA-NB rend hommage à l’industrie et aux individus qui soutiennent le mentorat efficace dans les métiers de la construction. Le 9 novembre, le PMA-NB, le gouvernement, les entreprises et les unions se rassembleront à Saint John pour reconnaître ceux qui mènent la charge dans le développement d’une culture d’apprentissage en milieu de travail. Cette année, nous avons le plaisir d’annoncer que le récipient du Prix de Champion Corporatif 2017 (100 employés et plus) est La Fraternité internationale des Chaudronniers – Local 73 et que Pro Insul Ltd. est le récipient du Prix de Champion Corporatif 2017 (100 employés et moins) ! Les Champions Corporatifs du PMA-NB établissent les normes d'excellence pour l'industrie concernant l'enseignement et l'apprentissage en milieu de travail. La Fraternité internationale des Chaudronniers – Local 73 établit au N.-B., en N.-É. et à l’Î.-P.-E. est reconnu pour son engagement envers l’apprentissage en milieu de travail, comme en témoigne leur adoption d’un programme de mentorat interne extensif et leur partenariat continu avec le PMA-NB.

Pro Insul Ltd., une entreprise d’isolement mécanique basé à Saint John, s’est joint au PMA-NB en 2016. Pro Insul a établi un standard d’innovation tôt avec le développement de stratégies pour sa main d’œuvre basée sur l’inclusion et le mentorat. L’équipe de direction de Pro Insul était vite à reconnaitre les avantages d’un programme de mentorat structuré pour leurs superviseurs et leurs apprentis et ils se sont engagés à intégrer une philosophie de mentorat à travers leur main d’œuvre. PMA-NB reconnaîtra également le Maître Mentor 2017 et l’Apprenti Exceptionnel 2017 ; des individus qui ont été mis en nomination par leurs pairs dans l’industrie pour leur dévouement à leur métier, le système d’apprentissage, leurs contributions à l’industrie et le mentorat en milieu de travail. Cette année, les commanditaires majeurs sont Irving Oil, Les syndicats des métiers de la construction du N.-B. et Énergie N.-B.. Les prix de distinction sont fabriqués par Brent Rourke of the Barn à Bloomfield. Il ne reste que deux douzaines de billets de disponibles pour l’événement de cette année qui sera tenu au Pavillon Lily Lake à Saint John le 9 novembre.
