A Letter From Our CEO and Board Chairman

BEHIND OUR BLUE DOOR ARE HOPES, DREAMS, AND GREAT FUTURES FOR OUR DALLAS AREA YOUTH

1 BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS of Greater Dallas Annual Report 2017

To our fellow Agents of Change:

We would like to start by thanking every donor, volunteer and corporate/foundation supporter that invested their time, energy, and resources into impacting the lives of the youth served by Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas. We have so many stories to share with you of the amazing youth impacted by the investment of our donors and supporters.

Together we achieved the following return on investment in 2017:

• Provided over 6,600 youth ages 6-18 with a safe place to go after school

• Served over 194,500 meals

• Awarded over $400,000 in scholarships to graduating seniors from low-income neighborhoods

• Increased training and development opportunities for staff to enable them to deliver impactful, outcome-driven programs throughout the year

• Provided over 2,200 hours of programming in the areas of Academic Success (educational programs), Healthy Lifestyles (nutrition, physical fitness, and mental/emotional support), and Good Character & Citizenship (leadership and community service)

As you flip through the pages of this annual report, we invite you to take a glimpse behind the blue door that thousands of Dallas county youth walk through every day after school. Some walk through the door to receive the last meal they will

have that night. Some for their only interaction with a positive, adult mentor. Some for refuge from a hostile home environment. Some for access to resources, opportunities and exposure to experiences they are not afforded at home or school. Some walk through the door simply for their only opportunity to just be a kid.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas is not just another after school program. For many of our youth, the Club is home. The Club is stability. The Club is family. The Club is hope.

Therefore, your investment in Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas allows our organization to continue to provide hope, resources, mentors, a safe haven, and a home to the youth who need us most. This is something we have done for over 50 years and counting. With 18 Club locations spread across Dallas County, we are located in the neighborhoods filled with children in need of all that we have to offer.

As you flip through these pages, we hope you not only see the lives you have touched, but how many futures you have changed.

Your partners in changing lives,

Charles English President & CEO Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas

Joyce WilliamsAssociate Vice Chancellor, DCCCDChairman, BGCD Board of Directors

MariahAge 12Member of Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas

When observing Mariah as she practices on her viola, it’s not hard to tell she’s a bit of a perfectionist. You can almost feel the intensity of her concentration as she stands with her back straight and instrument resting on her shoulder. Just two years ago, Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas (BGCD) introduced her to the viola by offering orchestra as part of our Center for a New Generation (CNG) programming at her elementary school.

Mariah would not have access to this type of programming without BGCD and generous donors like you. Despite her circumstances, Mariah has dreams of going to college and becoming an interpreter for the hearing impaired. We intend to help make this possible.

Great Futures, Like Mariah’s, Start Here.

Meet Mariah, future Deaf Interpreter.

JoshuaAge 7Member of Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas

Despite being only six years old, Joshua tends to maintain a very stoic expression. You can picture him, years from now, in his crisp black uniform lined with gold buttons and red trim. However, before he becomes a highly decorated marine he must first become a strong reader. Unfortunately, Joshua did not participate in an early childhood education program prior to starting the first grade. This resulted in him starting school without the ability to read. He now participates in BGCD’s Accelerated Early Childhood Education (AECE) program, which targets first-graders who have been identified as struggling readers.

Since enrolling, Joshua is not only reading on grade level but was introduced to his favorite book, Diary of a Wimpy Kid. With our continued support and help, we’ll ensure nothing holds him back from his future heroic career.

Great Futures, Like Joshua’s, Start Here.

Meet Joshua, future Marine.

BGCDallas Academic Success Programs

Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas launched its education initiative in 2008 with Project Learn, which was later changed to Academic Success. Through this initiative BGCD transitioned from a recreational and sports focus to a focus on academics and impactful enrichment programming. Below are a few signature Academic Success programs:

Reading Intervention: Accelerated Early Childhood EducationThe Accelerated Early Childhood Education (AECE) program is a reading intervention program implemented by Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas to provide a comprehensive learning environment for Club members entering the first-grade and reading below grade level.

Graduate From High School Ready For College, Trade School,

Military, Or Employment

Financial Literacy: Money MattersMoney Matters is a financial literacy program, in which youth learn how to manage checking accounts, create a budget and pay for college.

STEM: Texas Instruments Summer Coding CampEarlier this year, Texas Instruments awarded Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas with a $25,000 grant to fund our summer coding camp. Now known as the Texas Instruments Coding Camp, it encompasses curriculum developed and taught by University of Texas at Dallas computer science instructors. The week-long camp teaches the basics of coding and topics such as how to build a mobile app and video.

Studies show if students are not reading on grade level by 3rd grade, they are four times more likely to drop out of school.* BGCD is addressing this head-on by catching struggling readers in first grade and providing specialized curriculum to ensure students are reading on or above grade level by 3rd grade.

Daisy and GiselleAges 10Members of Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas

No one would ever guess that these bundles of energy once dealt with a lack of confidence and had academic concerns. With the help of the Club, their self-esteem has soared and their grades have improved exponentially.

Through tutoring, interactive programs and mentorship, they have not only grown personally and academically but they have set their sights on their future aspirations of becoming a judge and lawyer. We plan to do whatever is necessary to help them along the way. Therefore, we will continue to invest in their education, dreams and ultimately, their futures.

Great Futures, Like Daisy’s and Giselle’s, Start Here.

Did you know Texas is one of the top 4 states for human trafficking? Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas will not sit idly by while our young girls suffer. With the help of a grant from Dallas Women’s Foundation, BGCD launched #girlstrong in the spring of 2017. #girlstrong combines the evidence- based curriculum of SMART Girls and Net Smartz to provide human trafficking prevention and awareness to youth in at-risk environments.

Upon first meeting her, one would think she was a quiet and shy wallflower. However, this wallflower bloomed in front of her entire Club as she ran for President of the Torch Club…and won! Torch Club is a BGC program that awakens and strengthens the spirit of leadership and community advocacy in our youth. With the dream of becoming a neurosurgeon, Eden plans to go from leading Torch Club to someday taking the lead in an O.R. BGCD is investing in her education, her dreams and ultimately, her future.

JameyAges 18Member of Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas

Jamey became a member of Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas when he was six years old. With a single mom raising five children in south Dallas, the Club provided Jamey and his siblings with a safe and productive place to go every day after school.

At the Club, Jamey was empowered to see a life beyond his current circumstances. Through college-ready programs like Collegiate STEPS, he received help with applying for college and financial aid. He was also paired with a mentor to guide and support him as he prepared for life after high school. As a first-generation college student, this type of support was critical. Jamey, now a freshman at Texas Southern University, is majoring in Business Management. At BGCD we are committed to helping our youth not only graduate, but graduate with a plan for their future.

Jamey’s Future Started Here.

Our 9th Annual TOPPs (Threshold of Opportunities) Celebration took place on May 23, 2017 at the Frontiers of Flight Museum. This special dinner provided a unique opportunity for BGCD Club members to dine with corporate sponsors and community leaders. It honors our members and to bring supporters of the Club in direct contact with the children that benefit from their generosity. The TOPPs Celebration allows Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas to recognize our

Youth of the Year and Collegiate STEPS graduating seniors with special awards and scholarship money. In 2017, we celebrated the graduation of 80 Collegiate STEPS participants.

Due to the amazing support of donors and sponsors, exceeded our fundraising goal for TOPPs and made it one for the records! The TOPPs Celebration had a net of over $235,000! This doesn’t even include the amount of funds raised for scholarships. Thanks to our scholarship sponsors, BGCD was able to award over $400,000 in scholarships to our deserving youth!

We would be remiss to not give a special shout out to our overachieving co-chairs, George S. Watson and Michele Wheeler and our honorary chairs, Karen and Tom Falk. We cannot thank them enough for making it their personal objective to knock our fundraising goal out of the park! Another shout out to NBC 5 reporter, Cory Smith, for emceeing the night and making sure the event flowed seamlessly.

The 12th annual Corporate Cup Golf Tournament, presented by Kimberly-Clark Corporation, took place on October 10, 2017 at Dallas National Golf Club and it was another great success! Due to the generous support of our players and sponsors, we raised $348,500!

Net proceeds of $280,000 will go directly towards providing the thousands of youth served by Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas’ 18 Club locations with quality programming and transportation from school to the Club. Every day from 3pm-7pm our Club members not only have a safe place to go, but receive hot meals after school, help with homework, and participate in special programs that range

from Performing Arts to Sport Leagues to College- and Career-Ready. It is through funds raised at events like Corporate Cup that we’re able to do this.

A special thank you to the Corporate Cup planning committee and co-Chairs Mike Azbell and Grant McGee of Kimberly-Clark

Corporation. We are ever grateful to David Denley and the entire Dallas National Golf Club staff for welcoming Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas for another exceptional golfing experience.

BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS of Greater Dallas Annual Report 2017 14

Our annual math competition, Math Blazers, was held on Saturday, April 22nd. Math Blazers is an event hosted by Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas that allows 3rd – 8th grade students to display their math skills in a math competition that covers specific skills tied directly to Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) objectives at each grade level. Over 100 employees of Comcast, NBC 5, and Telemundo joined us at our Grand Prairie Boys & Girls Club location as volunteers. Volunteers helped youth with challenging math questions and workouts, oversee rocket launches, and conquer obstacle courses.

On Saturday, September 16th, hundreds of Club members from our various locations came together at Celebration Station for our annual Day for Kids event. Created as a day to foster relationships between adults and children, the mission of BGC Day for Kids is to establish a day to celebrate and honor children through the gift of meaningful time. Research shows that when adults spend meaningful time with kids it helps them develop a positive self-image and a sense of belonging, usefulness and purpose.

Thank you to the many sponsors that supported this special initiative and aided us in providing such a fun and memorable day for our youth.
