Welcome to Cass County 4-H School Enrichment! Looking for exciting activities to

enhance your current curriculum? 4-H School Enrichment - The University of Nebraska Extension’s “learning by doing” programs - can help your students develop skills and knowledge to meet the Nebraska State Board of Educa-tion Standards in Science, Social Studies and Reading/Writing. 4-H is the youth component of University of Nebraska Extension. Cooperation between UNL Extension and school systems has existed for many years, complementing the educational goals of both 4-H and schools. The educational materials used in 4-H are based on research and current technical knowledge and are pro-duced by specialists from the University of Nebraska, National 4-H Office and various universities and organizations throughout the United States. To meet federal accountability requirements for UNL Extension, teachers must provide a summary of the par-ticipants on the enrollment form. Funding and revisions of pro-grams are made based on these statistics. The School Enrichment program is part of the 4-H program and, therefore, students who participate in these courses are offered the same opportunity as 4-Hers; to participate in camps, 4-H ac-tivities, fair exhibits, as well as other 4-H projects. Further infor-mation may be obtained from the Cass County Extension Office. Enclosed is a list of 4-H School Enrichment projects for use in you classroom - available to teachers in Cass County. The enroll-ment form must be mailed, faxed, or e-mailed to:

Brett Kreifels, Interim Extension Educator and 4-H Team Lead

Tracy Ensor, Extension Assistant

This class demystifies one of the most beneficial molecules know to humankind...Polymers! Polymers are everywhere! They make up the stuff we wear, hair gel, t-shirts and even glue is a man made polymer.

In this class students will observe many common items that are made from man made polymers, be able to distinguish the differ-ence between monomers and polymers. Students will play with a non-Newtonian fluid to discover its mysterious properties! And as a big bonus, each student will get to make their own special blend of slime that is theirs to keep. Cost: $40.00 per class, up to 30 students Suggested Grade Levels: K –4th

Explore the wild world of animal predator/prey relationships by dissecting owl vomit, referred to as owl pellets. Students will get the opportunity to learn about how predators seek out and hunt their prey and additionally how digestion works not only in these owls but also in our own stomachs. Students will discover how our stomachs break down food using acid and they’ll also dissect an owl pellet and determine what the owl ate and how it digests its food. Was it a mouse, rabbit or some other animal? We’ll do a little investigative work to find out! Cost: $45.00 per classroom, up to 30 students. Suggested Grade Level: 2nd—5th Grade

Rockets to the Rescue

Aerospace engineering is an awesome science career! Aerospace engineers frequently encounter design challenges when develop-ing, manufacturing and testing aircraft and aerospace products. They are given goals, requirements and constraints, and must use their creativity and imagination to best solve the problem. As as-piring aerospace engineers, your students’ challenge is to come up with an aerospace design idea to solve this problem. The cur-riculum can be reformatted for multiple class periods or a one-two day program. Cost: $10.00 per classroom Suggested Grade Levels: 3rd—12th Grade

MakerFest is a daylong festival which allows students to create, think outside the box and problem solve. It will represent the democratization of design, engineering, fabrication, and educa-tion. This is done through a series of projects or challenges to create and build, trying technology that they have not seen before or in a new way, being exposed to STEM principles, and solving problems by thinking outside the box! Cost: none (funded by grant money) Suggested Grade Levels: 5th—12th

MakerFest

This challenge incorporates the fast-evolving field of wearable technology, teaching kids to not only use technology but create it. During the innovative, hands-on project, these future engineers must work
