This was briefly followed by the administration of pre-test questionnaire and a lecture
on Skills, Characteristics and knowledge of a community volunteer by Mr Michael Essien
of Lagos SACA. During his lecture, Mr Essien took the participants through what makes
a volunteer and the qualities of a volunteer. He talked on Community volunteerism,
experiences with volunteers on the field and the volunteer processes. He further
explained the qualities of a good volunteer where he talked about passion: those that
make the greatest impact in their volunteer work are those that are truly passionate
about their cause and have the ability to share that passion with others. Energy:
Their positive spirit is motivating and inspiring to others, leaving a lasting
impression on the people and communities that they work with. Flexibility:
Volunteering can involve a broad range of tasks, so a willingness to get stuck in and
adapt to what needs doing is an important quality. Volunteers stand out when they can
approach their work with an open mind and a willingness to learn. Again he
mentioned the modes of HIV transmission where the volunteers were made to
understand the importance of stressing the modes of transmission and window period.

At exactly 11:45am, a working tea break was served which brought in the second
lecture on Stress Management-Life/Work balance by Mrs. Philomena Okure of People
Empowerment Organisation. Who took the participants through the process of
work/life balance and how to manage stress/burn out. She defined stress as a normal
psychological and physical reaction to the ever-increasing demands of life. Some stress
are normal and even useful. She said stress can help if you need to work hard or react
quickly. For example, it can help you win a race or finish an important job on time.Stress
can affect you both instantly (acute stress) and over time (chronic stress). She
mentioned the different types of stress as Acute (short-term) stress is the body's
instant response to any situation that seems demanding or dangerous. Your stress level
depends on how intense the stress is, how long it lasts, and how you cope with the
situation. Most of the time, your body recovers quickly from acute stress. But stress can
cause problems if it happens too often or if your body doesn't have a chance to recover.
REPORT OF A TWO DAYS RETREAT FOR CSO AND COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS ON SKILLS IMPROVEMENT & PROGRAM SUSTAINABILITY 2016
In people with heart problems, acute stress can trigger an abnormal heartbeat
(arrhythmia) or even a heart attack.Chronic (long-term) stress is caused by stressful
situations or events that last over a long period of time. This could include having a
difficult job or dealing with a chronic disease. If you already have a health problem,
stress can make it worse.
She talked on the effects of stress such as fast heartbeat, headache, stiff neck and/or
tight shoulders, Back pain, Fast breathing, Sweating, and sweaty palms, upset stomach,
nausea, or diarrhea. She again mentioned the effect of stress on the bodies which are:
Immune system. Constant stress can make you more likely to get sick more often. And
if you have a chronic illness such as AIDS, stress can make your symptoms worse.Heart-
Stress is linked to high blood pressure, abnormal heartbeat (arrhythmia), blood clots,
heart attack, and heart failure.Muscles-Constant tension from stress can lead to neck,
shoulder, and low back pain. Stress may make rheumatoid arthritis worse.Stomach-If
you have stomach problems, stress can make your symptoms worse.Reproductive
organs- Stress is linked to low fertility, erection problems, problems during pregnancy,
and painful menstrual periods.Lungs- Stress can make symptoms of asthma and chronic
obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) worse. Skin- Skin problems such as acne and
psoriasis are made worse by stress. She mentioned how stress can affect even our
relationships and how to manage stress like Building downtime into your schedule:
When you plan your week, make it a point to schedule time with your family and
friends, and activities that help you recharge.Drop activities that sap your time or
energy.Do not weaste time on activities or people that add no value -- for example,
spending too much time at work with a colleague who is constantly venting and
gossiping and taking stock of activities that don't enhance your career or personal life,
and minimize the time you spend on them.
