I hope everyone was able to enjoy some quality time during the holiday season with your families. I would like to thank all of our students who participated in the Board of Education meeting in December. The musical talents of our orchestra, band, and choir students were enjoyed by everyone in attendance. I am proud of all of you! As we move into the colder months, please remember to send the appropriate outdoor recess clothing. It is important that students are dressed to play outside in the elements this time of year. Students enjoy going outside during the winter months, but need to be dressed warmly as it can be cold and windy on the playground. In colder temperatures, students will remain inside for recess. If the temperature or wind chill goes below 20 degrees, students will remain inside. PTA is gearing up for the annual Winter Carnival on January 29. It will be a fun wintertime activity for families to enjoy and perhaps even win a cake! I encourage all of our families to become actively involved in our PTA. They provide our students, staff, and school with many beneficial activities, programs, and fun-filled events. Finally, report cards will be sent home at the end of the month on January 29. If you have any questions or concerns, I encourage you to call and speak with your child’s teacher. One of the best ways to help support your child’s education is to foster a love of reading and have them read on a daily basis. Another simple way to help strengthen their foundation in math is to practice their basic facts. These are the building blocks to higher level literacy and math application. Your continued support is greatly appreciated. Educationally yours, Mrs. Kathleen A. Carney E.R. Hughes Building Principal

From the Desk of the Principal

Dear Parents,

Happy New Year!

9 year total - 3,548 toys collected!

In December 2015, Mrs. Wagner and her class organized the 9th annual Toys for Tots drive in our school building. 361toys were collected for families in need.  In the three weeks that the collection was held the students displayed a great attitude toward the cause.  We are proud of this outstanding group of fourth graders as well as the families of our E.R. Hughes students who have made this community contributor project such a great success.  The organizers picked up the toys in our main foyer once our collection was over.  Watching those smiling and laughing fourth graders carrying bags upon bags of toys to load into the van was heart-warming to say the least.

Stevens~Swan Humane SocietyAgain this year, the sixth grade students took on a "Pet Project" collecting donations for the

Stevens-Swan Humane Society.  Many needed items, from dog and cat food to cleaning supplies,

were brought in to help out our four legged friends in need.  On December 17, John paid a visit

to Hughes to collect all of the donations and talk with the students about the work of the

Humane Society.  They were very appreciative of the support!

Student Of The Month Congratulations to the physical education students of the month at Hughes Elementary. These students have worked

very hard to achieve this accomplishment. To receive this award, students must try their best in PE class, follow directions, always come to class prepared with athletic sneakers, demonstrate good sportsmanship, and follow safety procedures. Students must also

perform the fitness stations with good form. These activities include biceps curls, squats, triceps extensions, various stretching, agility, and core exercises. We are very proud of our hard working students at Hughes!

Nurse’s NotesHappy New Year!

Kindergarten RegistrationPlease remember to bring the required information to Kindergarten

registration which is being held on Tuesday, January 19th and Wednesday, January 20th. The Health Office needs your child’s immunization records

as well as your most recent physical exam from his or her doctor, along with their original birth certificate and proof of residency.

Keep your Germs To Yourself! We will all feel better. Coughing and sneezing spreads flu germs to everyone around you. Cover up to stop the flu virus. “Respiratory etiquette” made simple:

• Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.

• If you Don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into the bend of your elbow, not your hands!

• Put all used tissues in a wastebasket.

• Stay home if you think you have the flu.

• Remember that hand-washing remains our number one defense against germs.

Tdap ImmunizationAll students who will be entering 6th grade and are 11 years of age for the 2016-2017 school year are required to

have a Tdap in order to enter school in September. Please contact your physician early to schedule an appointment. This is a New York State Department of Health requirement.

6th Grade Physicals6th graders entertaining the thought of playing any sport in the 7th grade should pick up a Sports Physical form in

the Health Office. This Sports Physical form should be brought to your next scheduled doctor’s visit. This sports physical will count for the mandated 7th grade physical, as well as for sports.

Cold Weather ClothingPlease have your child dress warmly and appropriately for the weather. Occasionally, our children require a change of clothing unexpectedly. It is always a good idea to have a change of clothes stored at school, especially socks and

underwear.

Attention Parents: Are there any Registered ProfessionalNurses out there that would enjoy

substituting in the nurse’s office? Perhaps you have a friend or relative that is an RN and may be interested. Please give me a call at 738-9357.
