2016 DRUM MAJOR AUDITION • May 3, 9:00 AM – Location TBA Marching Demonstration (demonstrate proper technique and body positions) 1) Starting position: 50 yd line, 12 steps in front of the front hash facing front sideline - Standing in position of attention, arms down at sides 2) Give starting whistles (tweet, tweet, tweet [3], tweet [4], up [2, 3, 4]) at quarter note = 120 - Put hands up to simulate horns up, immediately following the fourth whistle, count out loud while executing all moves 3) MT8 4) Drag Turn 8, 90 degrees right 5) Forward March 8 @ 8 to 5 stride 6) Backward March 8 @ 8 to 5 stride 7) Forward March 12 @ 6 to 5 stride 8) Backward March 12 @ 6 to 5 stride 9) DT 8, 90 degrees left 10) Forward Slide left (moving toward South EZ) 10 @ 5 to 5 – recover to front 11) MT 4 [entire body is now facing front], 12) Backward Slide left 16 @ 8 to 5 (moving toward North EZ) – recover to front [now on 50 yd line] 13) MT 8 (entire body is now facing front) 14) Halt (Sic em’ Bears) Whistle Demonstration Give five starting whistles in tempos designated below (in this order) Quarter note = 144, pause (for at least 4 seconds), 90, pause, 160, pause, 120, pause, 180 – Accuracy and consistency of tempos are judged. Whistle style must be very short bursts of controlled sound with very high volume and clear, tongued articulation Conducting Part 1- Uptown Funk DM 2016 (ending is different than performed version) Conduct to recording provided Show proper style Maintains honest time/pulse Show musicianship through variety of gestures using speed, space, weight (overall dynamics, contrast, articulations, etc.) Show cues and demonstrate awareness of interplay between instrument sections (i.e. envision band in concert arcs for setup, show cues for sections who have melody or important lines in the music) Use left hand independence to show musical ideas Part 2 – Conduct with Dr. Odajima Dr. Odajima will conduct generic meters and will change styles. You will conduct with him and attempt to match his styles and gestures (i.e. He will conduct in 4/4 meter for a few bars in a style and you must mimic his style, then he will change to a different style or meter and you must adjust to follow him). Interview You will be asked questions in front of the panel regarding your background, your strengths/weaknesses, your vision of the role of the drum major, etc. Prepare appropriate statements for discussion. OPTIONAL Mace Demonstration Candidates may choose to demonstrate a short mace routine. He/she may borrow a mace from current drum majors (coordinate with Drum Majors on your own) or borrow a flag pole to use as a substitute to demonstrate your movement skills (contact Dr. Obado to receive a flag pole). 3 examples of different mace routines are available in video format for use by candidates on the Drum Major Info webpage (http://www.baylor.edu/gwb/index.php?id=872157) Candidates are free to use any of the example routines or make up their own routine. Routines should be 10-15 seconds in duration.
