Studying a TAFE at School course with TAFE Queensland South West gives students the opportunity to gain nationally recognised qualifications which count toward their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). Our courses also provide a way for students to get a head start on their career and even get credit toward a higher-level qualification.

Students can choose to study a certificate or higher-level qualification at high school as part of their senior studies. This could be through TAFE Queensland South West partnering with the school to deliver the course on schools grounds or the school’s teachers delivering the TAFE Queensland South West course.

TAFE Queensland South West offers hundreds of courses in almost any industry you can think of including childcare, nursing, business, hospitality, retail, building and construction, information technology, engineering and more.

HOW IT WORKSStudents need to be enrolled in senior phase of learning and attend a Queensland high school for the duration of the TAFE course. There are also some circumstances where year 10 students can access selected school courses. TAFE Queensland South West will look after enrolment, record student results and issue an Award or Statement of Attainment.

TAFE Queensland South West will even ensure student information is recorded in the school’s system for the Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). If students are unsure about how TAFE at School works, they should contact their school’s VET Coordinator, Guidance Officer or Head of Senior Schooling.

THERE ARE THREE WAYS TO STUDY THROUGH TAFE WHILE AT SCHOOL

IS A GREAT WAY TO...

ABOUT TAFE AT SCHOOL

HOW DO I APPLY?To nominate for participation in a TAFE at School program, please contact your school’s VET Coordinator, Guidance Officer or Head of Senior Schooling. You need to identify the program in your Senior Education and Training (SET) Plan through your school and have the school endorse your TAFE at School program choice.

OUTCOMESWhen the student finishes high school they will receive:

• a TAFE Queensland South West qualification upon successful completion of an accredited course

• a Statement of Attainment (where requested ) that lists units of study completed in a full qualification

• credit towards the Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE):

> certificate I, two or three credits (partial completion not recognised)

> certificate II, four credits towards the QCE (partial completion recognised)

> certificate III or IV, five to eight credits towards the QCE depending on the certificate (partial completion recognised).

FEESStudents studying a certificate or higher-level course at TAFE Queensland South West while at school may be charged fees. TAFE Queensland South West will outline any costs when the student enrols.

A range of qualifications are fee-free for students and covered under Vocational Education in Schools (VETiS) funding. In cases where a small fee applies, schools pay a co-contribution fee towards the student’s training. Choosing the most suitable qualification to study is important as students are only able to receive one qualification funded by VETiS. Visit our website for more information on fees at tafesouthwest.edu.au.

You will notice some of our programs in this guide have fees attached. VET FEE-HELP is available for VETiS Student enrolling into an Accelerate (Diploma) Program only, with TAFE Queensland South West. VET FEE-HELP is an Australian Government loan scheme to assist eligible students studying Diploma level and above qualifications to pay their tuition fees. RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNINGImagine if you could gain a formal qualification that acknowledges the work experience and skills you already have, so you could minimise - and in some cases eliminate - the need to do formal study.

RPL allows your experience to be matched to current industry qualifications so you can gain credit towards or even recognition for a full qualification. Experience can include:

• previous learning

• work or industry experience (paid or unpaid)

• volunteering

• partially-completed studies.

SHOULD I APPLY FOR RPL?You might already be on the right track. Do you answer “yes” to any of these questions?

• Do you want to gain formal recognition for your skills and workforce training?

• Are you already working or volunteering in the industry, or have you done so recently?

• Can your current or previous manager confirm your skills and experience?

• Could you demonstrate your skills and knowledge to someone else?

• Do you have any documentation (such as a portfolio of work) to support your claim?

If so, why not apply? You deserve the recognition. You’ve worked hard for it.

Contact us so we can arrange for you to talk to an RPL Assessor about how you can apply. They will explain the evidence you will need to support your application and any on-the-job or training components you may still need to meet.
