    INTRODUCTION

  • AGENDA

    8:00 – 8:15 Opening remarks

8:15 – 12:00: MORE Things You Didn’t Learn in Dental Hygiene School: Cardiovascular health, calcium and osteoporosis, vitamins and supplements, OTC pain medications – James Lichon rPh, DDS, nCCM

According to the CDC, heart disease is the leading cause of death for women in the united States, killing 292,188 women in 2009—that’s 1 in every 4 female deaths. Often, heart disease is thought of as a “man’s disease,” yet approximately the same number of women and men die each year of heart disease in the united States. (CDC.gov.) in spite of impressive technologic advances in the field of medicine, heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the united States. in our dental offices we are seeing more and more patients with heart disease. Greater than 1 in 3 of our adult patients have one or more types of heart disease and it is the most common medical condition that dental professionals confront.Dr. Lichon returns with updated information regarding coronary artery disease, peripheral vascular disease and stroke with a concentration on women. Also discussed, how calcium relates to osteoporosis, vitamins, supplements and OtC pain medications as related to dentistry.End of Morning Session

    12:00 – 1:30: Lunch/Lunch & Learn – Sponsor Product Presentation Free 1 Ceu

    AFTERNOON SESSION

1:30 – 2:45: The Role of the Dental Hygienist in HPV Cancers Prevention – eileen Duffey Lind MS, rn, CPnP and Katie-rose Wagner DDS

“According to the CDC over 20,000 women and 12,000 men are diagnosed with HPV related cancers each year, with cervical cancer the majority in women and oropharyngeal cancer the majority in men.(CDC 2014) HPV vaccination rates among young women thus far have been relatively low in comparison to other vaccines, and rates among young men are even lower. the vaccine has been shown to be highly effective in preventing HPV infection, therefore it is imperative to increase vaccination rates among youth in the u.S. With the link between HPV and cancer becoming very clear and the rate of HPV infection increasing, dental hygienists are vital components of the health care team that will help confront this significant public health issue. Diligence in HPV education and oral cancer screening can save lives.”

At the end of the session, the participant will be able to: Describe the burden of HPV disease. identify the relationship between HPV and HPV related cancers. Describe the safety and effectiveness and the importance of HPV vaccination for cancer prevention. explain the rationale for vaccinating youth at ages 11 or 12 and develop skills to effectively discuss HPV vaccination with parents of dental patients. Locate resources relevant to current immunization practice.

  • COURSE DESCRIPTION

the delivery of quality dental care is the primary goal of dental practitioners. equally important is the management of the patients’ anxiety and discomfort during these procedures. the accumulation of the daily physical mental, and emotional stress associated with the delivery of dental care has a negative impact on the operator. the accumulation of neuromuscular tension due to the physical operating positions (head down, arms forward) and the repetitive and fine motor movements can lead to chronic pain and dysfunction. the first part of this course is an interactive lecture and participants will learn yoga stretches and techniques they can use in the dental operatory. the second part of the program is “on the mat” and the participants will practice yoga postures designed to release the neuromuscular and musculoskeletal tension that accumulates in the body over a typical workday in a dental office.
