    About the Workshop A large portion of the population and infrastructure in Mexico is exposed to high seismic hazard. While seismic design codes were revised after the devastating 1985 Michoacan earthquake, existing buildings and bridges (pre-1985) were designed to standards that included limited seismic provisions and recommended inadequate design loads. Many of these structures were also built using substandard materials and poor construction practices. Re-cent earthquakes (Guerrero 2012, Chiapas 2014) have highlighted the poor seismic performance of existing build-ings and structures in Mexico and illustrated the urgent need to assess their vulnerability and develop reliable and sustainable strengthening solutions. The workshop will bring together world-leading researchers and relevant stakeholders to discuss advanced seis-mic risk assessment methodologies, design provisions, optimal strengthening strategies and technologies, fund-ing opportunities and establish research priorities and future requirements. The proceedings of the workshop will contribute to developing a comprehensive picture of the current state-of-the-art on seismic risk assessment and mitigation strategies. Selected papers will be invited for publication in a special issue of the International Journal of Earthquake and Impact Engineering (ISSN: 2397-9380). The rest of the scientific contributions will be disseminated through the workshop website using an Open Access policy.

    Workshop Coordinators Dr Maurizio Guadagnini Department of Civil and Structural Engineering The University of Sheffield, UK

    Dr Maurizio Guadagnini has fifteen years’ experience in the field of exper-imental mechanics, advanced modelling of reinforced concrete elements and the use of innovative materials for the reinforcement and strength-ening of concrete structures. He has been principal or co-investigator on several research grants and has managed and co-coordinated two large Marie Curie International research training networks, ConFibreCrete and En-Core. He is currently Chair of COST Action TU1207 ‘Next Generation Design Guidelines for Composites in Construction’, Coordinator of the Marie Curie ITN endure – European Network for Durable Reinforcement and Rehabilitation Solutions, and secretary of fib T5.1 ‘FRP (Fibre Rein-forced Polymer) Reinforcement for Concrete Structures’. He is member of fib T2.5 on ‘Bond and Material Models’, two RILEM TC on strengthen-ing of masonry and concrete structures, and member of the council of the International Institute for FRP in Construction (IIFC).

    Professor Jose Manuel Jara Guerrero Faculty of Civil Engineering Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolas de Hidalgo

    Professor Jara has 33 years of experience in earthquake engineering and higher education. His PhD investigated the seismic performance of build-ings with energy dissipating systems. His research and teaching at the UMSNH have focused on the seismic risk assessment, vulnerability and loss estimation of bridges/buildings. He has been visiting researcher at the a) Institute of Earthquake Engineering & Engineering Seismology (Macedonia), b) ELSA Laboratory (Italy), c) Texas A&M University (US), and d) University of Aveiro (Portugal). Professor Jara has authored over 100 papers, two books and several book chapters, and is member of several editorial boards. He has been PI of several research projects supported by the National Council for Science & Technology (CONACyT), State Council for Science, Technology & Innova-tion, and Scientific Research Council (UMSNH). He is “National Research-er” in CONACyT’s National Researchers System, and “Academic Titular” in the Mexican Academy of Engineering.

    Workshop Mentors Professor Kypros Pilakoutas Department of Civil and Structur-al Engineering The University of Sheffield, UK

    Professor Kypros Pilakoutas obtained his degree in Civil Engineering (1984) and PhD in Earthquake Engineering (1990) from Imperial College. In 2003, he was awarded the title of Doctor Honoris Causa by the Tech-nical University of Iasi. He was promoted to Chair of Construction Innova-tion in 2004. Since 1995, he has been the Manager and Director of the Centre for Cement and Concrete and he is currently leading the Concrete and Earthquake Engineering Group with over 30 academics and re-searchers. Professor Pilakoutas’ research is in the fields of earthquake engineering, structural concrete, FRP, FRC, repair and construction innovation. He has over 400 papers and reports; mostly in refereed journals and confer-ences. He is an invited member of several International technical com-mittees and networks and he led research contracts in excess of €18M, including 12 contracts under FP6 and FP7. These include major multi-partner projects such as “Eurocrete”, “ConFibreCrete”, “Encore”, “Ecolanes” and “Bandit”, with more than 40 international partners. Cur-rently, he is leading FP7 collaborative research project “Anagennisi” and co-investigating 3 more EU and UK projects of total value €8M. Professor Pilakoutas is the departmental Commercialisation Champion and a Direc-tor of two technology spin-out companies. He has over 30 patents awarded, three of which are commercially exploited worldwide.

    Dr Iman Hajirasouliha Department of Civil and Structur-al Engineering The University of Sheffield, UK

    Dr Iman Hajirasouliha is a Senior Lecturer in Structural Engineering and the leader of the Earthquake Engineering Group and Earthquake Engi-neering MSc Course Tutor in the Department of Civil and Structural Engi-neering at the University of Sheffield. He has over 15 years of research experience in the field of Earthquake Engineering, Seismic Strengthening, Performance-based Design, Structural Optimisation and Advanced Mod-elling of Reinforced Concrete and Steel Structures. He has been Primary or Co-investigator of over €8M EU and UK funded projects, including co-Investigator of the Marie Curie International Research Training Network “endure”, FP7 EU funded project “Anagennisi” and COST Action TU1207. He has received several prestigious fellowships and awards such as Marie Curie Individual Research Fellowship (EU) and Distinguished Young Re-searcher award (Iranian Earthquake Engineering Association). He is a member of several national and international Technical Committees and Research Networks (e.g. ACI, fib, IStructE) and has developed a strong network of contacts within the industry and academia. Dr Hajirasouliha is the author of more than 100 papers in refereed journals and internation-al conferences, and is a member of the editorial board of two interna-tional journals in the field of Structural Engineering. He has also over 10 years consultancy experience in structural design and rehabilitation of buildings and bridges.

    Professor Manuel Jara Diaz Faculty of Civil Engineering Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolas de Hidalgo, Mexico

    Manuel Jara Diaz is a Professor of Civil Engineering at the Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolas de Hidalgo (UMSNH) in Mexico. He received his BEng and MSc in Civil Engineering (Structures) from Universidad Au-tonoma Metropolitana (UAM), Mexico, and his PhD from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC), Spain. After working as a lecturer at UAM, he joined the UMSNH in 1991. His research interests are in the fields of earthquake engineering and seismic bridge performance. Professor Jara has been actively involved in several research projects that led to new developments and advancement in the Mexican seismic design code, as well as in the bridge engineering design code. He is Member of CONA-CyT’s National Researchers System (SNI) and of several learnt societies in the field. He has received prestigious prizes as “Distinguished Graduate” from UAM and from the Civil Engineering Association of Mexico (CICM). Professor Jara has published over 80 papers in referred international journals and in national/international conferences. He has authored two books on seismic design and is coauthor of several book chapters. His current research focuses on the effect of the vertical seismic component on full long-span bridges, and on bridge safety of long-span prestressed bridges under progressive construction. He has also over 25 years consul-tancy experience in design, construction and rehabilitation of bridges.

    Professor Amado Gustavo Ayala Milian Instituto de Ingenieria Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico, Mexico

    Professor Ayala has 47 years of experience in the develop-ment/application of numerical methods in earthquake engineering. He obtained his PhD from the University of Southampton (UK) and was ap-pointed as professor at the Instituto de Ingenieria (UNAM) in 1974. Dr Ayala has been visiting professor at the Universities of Waterloo (Cana-da), Cornell (USA), Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University (USA) and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (USA). He was Head of the Applied Mechanics and Structural Dynamics sections at UNAM. He is member of the Mexican Academy of Engineering, National Researcher Level II (CONACyT), and PRIDE researcher Level III. He received a Marie Curie fel-lowship in 2005, the “National Researcher Prize” by the Mexican Society of Structural Engineering in 2006 and became Honorary Member of such society in 2012. Dr Ayala also provides advice to national/international companies working in the field of seismic risk assessment. Professor Ayala has written over 200 papers and is member of several editorial boards of high quality journals. He has been PI of several re-search projects supported by CONACyT, UNAM and Mexico’s Disaster Prevention Centre (CENAPRED). He sits on national committees in charge of management and development of public policies in the UNAM, CONA-CyT and the Ministry of Education (SEP). He is a member of nation-al/international assessment boards to evaluate research proposals and a mentor of several COST Action International Training Schools.

    About Morelia Morelia is a city and municipality in the north central part of the state of Michoacán in central Mexico. The city is in the Guayangareo Valley and is the capital and largest city of the state. The main pre-Hispanic cultures here were the Purépecha and the Matlatzinca, but no major cities were founded in the valley during this time. The Spanish took control of the area in the 1520s. The Spanish under Viceroy Antonio de Mendoza founded a settle-ment here in 1541 with the name of Valladolid, which became rival to the nearby city of Pátzcuaro for dominance in Michoacán. In 1580, this rivalry ended in Valladolid’s favor and it became the capital of the colonial province. After the Mexican War of Independence, the city was renamed Morelia in honor of José María Morelos, who hailed from the city. In 1991, the city was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its well preserved colonial buildings and layout of the historic center. Climate Morelia has a Subtropical highland climate with warm-to-hot days and cool nights year round due to its high alti-tude. Most precipitation falls during the summer rainy season. Average monthly temperatures are between 14 and 22°C, with maximum temperatures of 38.5°C in the early summer.

    How to get to Morelia By air: There are four direct flights every day from Mexico City to Morelia with Aeromexico (https://aeromexico.com/en/uk/) and Aeromar (https://www.aeromar.com.mx/).
