INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE DIPLOMA PROGRAMME

A globally recognized curriculum, the IB Diploma Programme aims at developing students’ knowledge, skills, and attitudes through multi-modal approaches to teaching and learning. In addition to interdisciplinary academic coursework, core curricular components include: The Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge, and CAS (Creativity, Activity, and Service). The Extended Essay requires students to undertake an in-depth independent research project focused on a topic of their choice. Theory of Knowledge challenges students to reflect critically on the way they perceive the world. CAS encourages students to build skills, interests and personal/social awareness outside of the traditional classroom setting (experiential education). ISL students graduate from the IB Programme as well-rounded individuals, ready for success.

INTERNATIONAL GENERAL CERTIFICATE OF SECONDARY EDUCATION

The Cambridge International General Certificate for Secondary Education is the world’s most popular international curriculum for 14 to 16 year olds, leading to the globally recognized and valued Cambridge IGCSE qualification. The University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) is based in the U.K.

Each subject offers clear objectives and assessment standards. Learners develop not only knowledge and understanding, but also skills in creative thinking, enquiry and problem solving. IGCSE is an internationally recognized educational curriculum encompassing a wide range of subjects and learning opportunities. Academic rigour, coupled with applied skill development, encourages students to engage in meaningful ways with their education and school environment. Coursework, enriched with globally minded content, helps prepare students to move forward into the next stage of their

academic careers, which at ISL is the IB Diploma Programme, and to ultimately pursue study in higher education.

All ISL Upper Secondary School students are required to fulfill the following graduation requirements. Students entering ISL after Year 10 may be unable to take a certain course, in which case the relevant requirement may be waived. The requirements for graduation include completion of Years 10-13 with the minimum accumulation of 24 credits. One credit is awarded for a course that is a full year of study and in which the student has received a passing grade of 3 or above. A full year of a Higher Level IB course with a score of 4 or above earns students 1.5 credits. ISL highly recommends that additional credits and courses be taken.

In addition to the academic programme, students will participate in at least 75 hours of service learning in Year 10, IB1 and IB2. Projects students work on include volunteering in a centre for physically disabled boys, teaching in Mother Teresa’s Community School, gardening and jewelry making with a support group for HIV+ women, working in a transit center for abandoned girls, and/or renovating a playroom and playing with children in a pediatric oncology ward.
