SECTION 10 1400 – SIGNS

PART 1 - PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1 SUMMARY A. Section Includes:

1. Cast acrylic panel signs. 2. Metal dimensional letters.

1.2 DEFINITIONS A. Braille: Grade 2 Braille including 189 part-word or whole word contractions in addition to Grade 1Braille

63 characters. Tactile is required whenever braille is required. B. Non-tactile: Letters and numbers on signs with width-to-height ratio between 3:5 and 1:1 and stroke

width ratio between 1:5 and 1:10 using upper case "X" to calculate ratios. Use type styles with medium weight; upper and lower case lettering is permitted; serif typestyles are permitted.

C. Symbols: Symbol itself is not required to be tactile but equivalent verbal description is required both in tactile letters and braille.

D. Tactile: 1/32" raised capital letters without serifs at least 5/8" height and not more than 2" height based on upper case "X". Braille is required whenever tactile is required.

1.3 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION A. Signage under this section is intended to include items for identification, direction, control, and

information of building where installed as complete integrated system from a single manufacturer. B. ADA design requirements:

1. Signage requiring tactile graphics: a. Wall mounted signs designating permanent rooms and spaces such as, room numbers and

restroom, department, office, and fire exit identifications. b. Individually applied characters are prohibited.

2. Signage not requiring tactile graphics but require compliance to other ADA requirements: All other signs providing direction to or information about function of space such as, directional signs (signs with arrow), informational signs (operating hours, policies, etc.), regulatory signs (no smoking, do not enter), and ceiling and projected wall mount signs.

C. ADA performance requirements: 1. Tactile graphics signs mounting requirements:

a. Height: The tops of all signs to be the same height unless noted otherwise. Verify this with Architect prior to installation. The bottom of the uppermost line of tactile text cannot be greater than 60 inches and the lowest tactile or braille cannot be below 48” above finish floor.

b. Single doors: Mount signs on wall adjacent to latch side of door where possible. c. Openings: Mount signs on wall adjacent opening. d. No wall space adjacent latch side of door, opening, or double doors: Mount sign on nearest

adjacent wall.

1.4 SUBMITTALS A. General: Submit in accordance with Section 01 3000. B. Product Data: Submit product data for each type of sign specified, including details of construction

relative to materials, dimensions, profiles, and finishes. C. Shop Drawings:

1. Submit shop drawings which include fabrication, installation of, and finish of specified systems for the Cast Acrylic Panel signs and Dimensional Lettering.

2. Include following: a. Fully dimensioned plans and elevations with detail coordination keys. b. Locations of exposed fasteners and joints. c. Message list for each sign required. d. Large-scale details of wording and metal letter spacing layouts. e. Installation details.

3. Setting drawings, templates, and directions for installation of anchor bolts and other anchors to be installed as a unit of Work in other Sections.

Cast Acrylic Sheet: Provide cast (not extruded or continuous cast) methyl methacrylate monomer plastic sheet, in sizes and thicknesses indicated, with a minimum flexural strength of 16,000 psi when tested according to ASTM D 790, with a minimum allowable continuous service temperature of 176 deg F (80 deg C), and of the following general types Opaque Sheet: Provide colored opaque acrylic sheet in colors and finishes from the manufacturer's standards for Architect to choose from.

C. Fasteners: Use concealed fasteners fabricated from metals that are not corrosive to sign material and mounting surface.

D. Colored Coatings for Acrylic Plastic Sheet: Colored coatings, including inks and paints for copy and background colors; recommended by acrylic manufacturers for optimum adherence to acrylic surface, and nonfading for application intended.

2.3 CODE SIGNAGE A. Sign Schedule: Provide signage as required by codes and accessibility regulations and requirements.

2.4 ACRYLIC CAST SHEET PANEL SIGNS A. Produce smooth, even, level Acrylic Cast sign panel surfaces, constructed to remain flat under installed

conditions. B. Unframed Cast Panel Signs: Fabricate signs with edges mechanically and smoothly finished to

conform with following requirements: 1. Edge and Corner Condition: Square cut.

C. Size: As Scheduled on the Drawings. D. Graphic Content and Style: Sign copy that complies with requirements indicated for size, style, spacing,

deleterious matter. C. Examine supporting members of soffit materials to receive cast metal letters are complete and ready to

receive letter installation.

3.2 INSTALLATION A. General:

1. Locate sign units and accessories where indicated on Drawings, using concealed mounting methods in compliance with manufacturer's instructions.

2. Install signs and letters level, plumb, and at height indicated, with sign surfaces free from distortion or other defects in appearance.

3. Wall-Mounted Panel Signs: Attach panel signs to surfaces using double-sided tape per Code requirements.

4. Metal Letter Signs: Attach letters & numbers to top of canopy with appropriate submaterial fasteners. See details.

3.3 CLEANING AND PROTECTION A. After installation, clean soiled sign surfaces according to manufacturer's instructions. B. Protect units from damage until acceptance by Owner and not more than 48 hours prior to Date of

Substantial Completion. C. Provide Owner with maintenance information and checklist for future re-ordering information.

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1 SUMMARY

A. Section includes high volume low speed (HVLS) ceiling fans and accessories

1.2 SUBMITTALS

A. Product Data: 1. Ceiling Fans 2. Mounting Hardware 3. Controls

B. Application Drawings: Plan, section, elevation and isometric view necessary to convey all information required for installation and coordination with building features, lighting, fire protection and mechanical.

1.3 COORDINATION

A. A. The fan shall be capable of receiving a stop command from the fire panel, an ASD (Aspirating Smoke Detection) device, or any number of smoke, flame or heat detectors.

B. The fans shall be as follows: 1. The fan shall meet the air velocity requirements of FM Global’s 2.0 data sheet for

ESFR sprinklers. 2. The fan shall be wired into the building’s fire suppression system so that the fan

will automatically shut off within a maximum of 90 seconds after sprinklers are activated. To facilitate this automatic shut-down, the fan shall include a Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) within the control panel. The low voltage wire and relay needed to accomplish this must be supplied by the Fire Alarm installer.

3. Upon fire detection as described above, the fans shall coast to stop as required by NFPA guidelines.

1.4 WARRANTY

A. Lifetime warranty for airfoils, hub, frame and mounting

B. Provide 4ft (approx.) mounting extension. Contractor shall field verify fan mounting height with the owner prior to ordering.

2.6 SAFETY

A. The fan shall include retainers to prevent the airfoils from separating from unit as well and a safety cable to ensure the unit cannot fall to the ground.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 PREPARATION

A. Check accuracy of dimensions indicated for openings to receive fans.

B. Check location and availability of utility services to ensure proper voltage and installation preparation.

C. Coordinate location and installation of the Fans.

D. Ensure building structural members are sufficient to support the weight and operation of the fan. Consult professional engineer or registered architect as required.

3.2 INSTALLATION

A. Install units per manufacturer's written instructions.

B. Mount fan above manufacturers minimum recommended height.

C. All safety and support features must be installed. These include any guy wires and safety cables as well as airfoil retainer locking features.

D. Adjust unit as required for proper operation in accordance with manufacturer’s installation instructions.

E. Securely anchor units.

F. Ensure that operating parts turn freely prior to initial startup.

G. Repair or replace damaged parts, dents, buckles, abrasions or other damage affecting appearance or serviceability, as acceptable to Architect.

3.3 PROTECTION

A. Protect finished Work until date of Substantial Completion.

B. Touch-up, repair or replace damaged products before Substantial Completion.

3.4 CLEANING

A. Clean Work per Section 01 74 00.

B. Clean and inspect fans per manufacturer's instructions.

C. Remove temporary protective cover at date of Substantial Completion.
