A Note From Your Director
¨ New to volunteering? Please complete a Volunteer Application, available at
the front desk, to become a registered Volunteer. Also, every Volunteer
should have one on file, even if you’ve been volunteering for years.
This has been quite a winter, but spring is on its way. I want to
thank you for your patience and your flexibility this long winter with not only a lot of ice and snow, but also a lot of difficulties navi-
gating the parking lot during the roof construction. Hopefully by
the time you read this the roof will be completed. I know how much
of a struggle it’s been for all of you trying to get to the Center. Thanks for not
giving up.
I want to tell you about an exciting upgrade to our Senior Center – our new
database. We are in the process of moving our records to a central cloud-based
database program used by Senior Centers across the country. It will be a foundation for our future, but will also allow us to be more efficient now. You, as
members, really won’t be affected until we move into a later phase with
touch-screen sign-in at the Center. We ask for some patience during this process,
as the staff begins learning the system, and we apologize for any glitches that may
occur in our membership records as we make the transition.
Look at all the exciting things coming up this month and beyond at our Center,
some of them old favorites and others that will start new traditions. For something
new, I can’t wait for the afternoon when we create a piano bar right here in our great room; I can hear you singing now. Our annual Volunteer Appreciation
Luncheon will be on April 1st with a “Run for the Roses” Kentucky Derby theme
being planned by Steph. Please realize that this event is for registered Volunteers;
we must have an accurate count to give the caterers so please register at the front
desk to receive your ticket by March 15th. We appreciate your understanding.
We are excited to announce that our first Senior Life Expo was so successful last
year that we have expanded it this year, moving to the Douglas County Events Center on April 21st from 3:00-7:00 PM. Many volunteers, both those at Senior
Center tables as well as event assistance, are needed for this event to be successful.
Please see Steph if you are able to help out that afternoon. We hope you will also
invite family members to attend to talk to organizations from throughout the county
involved in all types of senior programs. ~ Debbi
Kay had been volunteering for our VOA lunches and was a natural moving into our part-time position overseeing our VOA lunch program, potlucks and other events involving food. Kay is a ball of energy who is always trying new things - did you know that she taught herself to quilt recently and spends much of her free time quilting and giving away what she makes? She says it’s her goal to get better at crafting, but most everyone who sees what she makes sees no need for improvement. She also loves to cook and shares her passion with her husband of 45 years, Ben, who is always taking her goodies to work at Home Depot, so he’s a very popular guy there. Kay was raised in Texas but moved here to be closer to her daughter. She realizes just how precious life is after having lost another grown daughter. She has 2 granddaughters and 2 great granddaughters. She and Ben also love to golf, bowl and truly enjoy spending time doing things together. Kay says she got into volunteering after she sold her business here, because she loves people and being active. “I love the people here,” she says, “and I love sharing my life with them.”

March Volunteer: Jim Weglarz

It isn’t every day you meet a “Professional Volunteer.” That is what this month’s Volunteer of the Month is, and we are so incredibly lucky to have him here as one of our Volunteers. His resume following retirement reads like that of a corporate mogul, not someone heading off into his golden years of retire-ment. Jim Weglarz is not only a VOA Lunch Volunteer - and tuxedo-clad Jeeves whenever we need something a little fun - but he’s co-chairman for our Senior Golf League and is an active member of the fundraising and golf tournament committees. This is only what he does for the Senior Center. He’s also on the Board of Directors of the Douglas-Elbert Task Force, volun-teers weekly to pick up food from donating organizations for the Task Force, is president of Historic Douglas County, secretary of the Larkspur Historical Society, and is a long time volunteer at the National Western Stock Show and many other places.
Jim was born in Chicago in a Polish community with his siblings and his grandma - perhaps that is why he has such a special heart for seniors. He played football in high school, then received his business degree from Elmhurst College. He started working for UPS his first year of college, and never left until he retired 37 years later. UPS saw what they had in him, and never let him go. As he moved up the ranks he lived in Omaha, Denver and Louisville. He opened DIA for UPS Cargo when the new airport was built there.
Jim has 3 children and 6 grandchildren who live in San Francisco and Illinois. In 1990 he married Janet, who he lovingly refers to as his “mail order bride.” They met after she, on a dare, placed a newspaper ad looking for a date; they were trendsetters long before online dating became popular. Upon retiring, they moved back to Colorado and purchased 43 acres of land 17 miles south of Franktown, where they built their home. Ask Jim about the new love of his life - his yellow lab puppy who is joyfully consuming their lives right now. When not walking the dog or out volunteering, Jim likes to watch or do sports - he is a huge Bronco fan. He also loves to read and is an avid lover of history. He enjoys going to antique auctions and traveling. He and Janet love to visit the kids and use their timeshare weeks to travel to different places every year.
There aren’t many people who can live up to the title, “Professional Volunteer,” but Jim Weglarz is one who is. We thank him so much for the time and resources he donates not just to the Castle Rock Senior Center, but to so many worthy organizations in our area. May his passion and energy spark a desire to give back in each of us.

Since the risk for falls increases with every decade you age, let's look at some ways to stay
on your feet! Every year one in three adults age 65 or older experiences a fall - but less
than half tell their doctors. Also, you should know that falling once doubles your chance
of falling again. Here's one more scary statistic: every 20 minutes an older adult dies from
a fall in our country. Injuries that most often occur with a fall are a broken bone or a brain
injury. Many people are on blood thinners so a bump on the head needs to be evaluated by a physician
right away.
Here are four things that you can do to prevent falling:
1. Maintain or improve your leg strength and balance through an exercise program. We are just
finishing our third Matter of Balance class series here at the CRSC and will most likely offer this
class again in the fall. Many of you attend Silver Sneakers classes, go to the gym routinely, or
participate in our Sit and Be Fit classes.
2. Medications can cause you to be unsteady or dizzy, so ask your doctor or
pharmacist to review your medications to eliminate this risk factor.
3. You need to see where you are going, so get an annual eye checkup and make sure your glasses, if you wear them,
are up to date with your latest prescription. If you have low vision, consider attending the support group which meets
at the Senior Center, for helpful information.
4. Make your home safe by: removing clutter and tripping hazards; putting railings on all stairs; adding grab bars in the
bathroom by the toilet and tub/shower; and having good lighting, especially by stairways. And yes, removing clutter
means not having throw rugs. It's much easier to clean your carpet or floor than to have surgery for a broken hip!
Another thing you can do if you notice you are not as sure on your feet as you once were, is to consider using a cane or
walker when walking. A physical therapist can help you determine what's best for you and how to use it. These are called
"assistive devices" for a reason - they are there to assist you to exercise and keep your legs strong by walking while
maintaining your balance. Last but not least, don't forget about your feet and shoes. Painful or numb feet should be
evaluated by your doctor. Shoes should be supportive and fit your feet properly as both can affect your gait - or how you
walk. While life's accidents happen, you can reduce your chances of falling by taking some proactive steps in advance

Why is it that nice white
snow makes such a mess on
our cars? No one wants to drive around covered in road
grime. Purchase car wash
certificates to Castle Rock’s
MotoSpa, so you are ready
when the spring snows come
- by doing so you’ll take better care of your car and
you’ll make some money for
the Senior Center.
We hold monthly fundraisers at area restaurants
- anyone can participate by going to the particular restaurant on the particular date.
Order off the menu and pay for your meal or
carry-out as usual. As long as you turn in a
flyer, which we have in the newsletter, on the
website, and at the Center, a portion of your bill
will be donated to the Center. What an easy way for you to help in fundraising. Give them out to
friends and family to participate.
Make someone’s day - send them a card. We’ll address it if you don’t have it. What a great deal!

Join us for a special winter activity you’ll never forget. We will be taking a one-hour sleigh ride at Snow Mountain
Ranch, near Granby, with extraordinary high peak views, forests and a stop along the way for a campfire with marshmallow roasting and hot chocolate to warm you. We will stop in the lodge first for an all-you-can-eat buffet lunch including salad bar, hot entrees, drinks, homemade soups and desserts (included in the fee). Then we’ll put on our warm clothes and boots, and head to the stables to meet the wranglers. There is nothing quite like gliding over the snow and taking in the views while wrapped in blankets, as the horses do all the work. Plus, you’ll be amazed at the breathtaking views on the trip to Snow Mountain as we go over Berthoud Pass - those views alone are worth the trip if you’ve never seen them. Come along, everything is included in the fee, and check “sleigh ride” off your bucket list - or do it again if you went with us a few years ago. If the weather does not cooperate, we will reschedule the trip within the month, as the ranch knows that Seniors don’t drive in the snow.

Denver’s Restaurant Week is a chance to visit a
famed restaurant you might not normally go to. We
scoured menus and found what we believe will be a
great meal at a great price. We are going to
Denver’s famous Morton’s the Steakhouse on
Wednesday, March 2nd. Restaurant Week menus
consist of a 3-course meal for a fixed-price, but
each restaurant can choose their menu. See details
on page 12 and we will also have the menu selec-
tions at the front desk if you want to look at it. If
you’re ready for a special evening in the city, please
join us for this trip. We are limited to 25 people.

to give it a try. We’d love more helpers.

Representatives from human ser-vices will be here to help members see if they qualify for a variety of
services. Feel free to stop by to talk to them, no appointment needed, as
you may be eligible.

time, with refreshments, to ask questions, meet some people and find
out how to get involved.

Presented by:
Rebecca Wilson, L.Ac. TCM Whole Health, Inc in Castle Rock
Activity Fee is the same even if you bring lunch.
We’re going to turn the Senior Center into a piano bar, complete with beverages and snacks along with seats around the piano. Skip, who is a piano player at the famous “Golden Bee” at the Broadmoor, will bring the Golden Bee songbooks and we’ll all spend some time singing along as he takes requests. This is something new; we’ve been wanting to go to a piano bar - but it’s difficult as we can’t save seats - so we’re bringing the piano bar to us! Please sign up in advance and start warming up your voice. Don’t worry, everyone sings together, not like karaoke.
Please come provide input to Castle Rock Fire & Rescue at
12:30 PM on Thurs., March 3rd.
